Title: Beware on 2014 sale units
Post by: Lipo423 on November 19, 2015, 02:36:52 PM
Yesterday my charger blowed out…

The symptoms are the ones repeated here…
When I ordered the bike I insisted in having a "safe" or new non-defective, last batch charger in order to avoid potential issues…they laugh…

Yesterday I was not laughing…

Please pay special attention because it looks like these guys are not replacing (even for the 2014 new delivered units) the chargers.

Shame on you Zero!

They are certainly replacing defective chargers for 2014 bikes.  Contact Zero directly, get your dealer to verify, and they will send a new charger to the dealer.  The dealer must first go through a problem solving process before they will ship any replacement parts.

Hate that it blew out that fast maybe you had a power surge or very well could be a bad charger from the start.  If it ever worked for you since you got it home there would have been no way for the dealer to know it was bad.  But Zero is very good at warranty repairs.  It may take some time, but they will get it right.

Knock on wood, but my very-early-build 2014 S has a charger that has always worked perfectly on the non-surge-protected 120V coming out of my garage wall socket. Hearing about these charger problems recently makes me wonder if Zero switched charger manufacturers sometime in late 2014 and they received some bad ones.   ???

Does anyone know if this is a known problem due to changing the charger "version" or hardware specs, specifically addressing some known failure modes? And if it is possible to tell from the revision number or physical shape of the charger or in some other way? Or is it just poor quality control and it happens at random? And therefore, even a "new" charger might just be as bad as the original that failed...

It is definitely a bad charger as I was charging in my parent's house…the bike has around 500 miles…accidentally before I bought my SR, I got a 2015 DS demo unit…the charger it also blew out -this time home- at pretty much the same mileage!!
I have never had a similar problem with other electronic devices home -and I have a lot of them  ;)

The symptoms were also the same in both cases…when you plug it, home electronic circuit breaker goes off

From what I know, there were a number of chargers which were bad…unfortunately as Zero does not know precisely the serial break they are just being replaced as soon as they blow out…which is what I do not like  >:(

Never had a problem with my 2012 DeltaQ  :'( but these chargers play in a different quality league...

I purchased my 2014 S in August of 2014 and I haven't had any issues with my charger yet with over 10K on the ODO.  Just because I purchased it in August doesn't tell me when the bike was made.  Is there a way to tell?

It sounds like the chargers that have failed are doing so pretty early so hopefully I don't have a lemon.  Though, once I get my Super Charger in a week or so it won't matter.  It it does stop working I will want to get it fixed while it's still under warranty but I will still be able to charge while I wait for claims to be filed and parts to be ordered etc.

For what its worth, my experience with Zero warranty issues has been mostly positive.  I did have some issues with the plastic on my bike.  All three panels around the battery developed cracks around the screws and the Z fell off the tank on one side.  Depending on which side you were looking at I was either riding a 'Zero S' or an 'ero S'.  I took some pictures and sent them to the dealer who then filed the claim.  Zero sent new parts and the dealer shipped them to me since the dealer is 300 miles away.  I ended up with three new plastic panels for around the battery and a brand new tank.  I wasn't expecting a new tank....I thought they would just send a decal kit.  The only problem was they sent me the plastic for a power tank, which I don't have.  I haven't said anything because it's not really worth the hassel.  I love the storage in the tank (wish there was more) so I never put the new tank on the bike.  I took all the letters off the tank on both sides so now I have a badgeless bike.  I never put the other new plastic on the bike either.  As it turns out, I now have a brand new tank that I can use if I decide to mount my new DigiNow Super Charger there.  ;D

This happened 2 months after I bought the bike.  I'm not sure Zero would send new plastic for a bike that was older.  I have been told by a dealer that its not too expensive to buy new plastic from Zero....at least compared to the Honda parts he is used to buying.

I'm pretty sure my 2012 Zero VIN plate has manufactured date on it. Did you look at your VIN plate?

The VIN plate sticker on the head-stock will have the manufacturing date on it. Mine says December 2013.

I know that Zero is doing QA on the 2014 deliveries as mine was delayed when it failed pre-shipping QA. They replaced some parts and shipped it out. I think the motor was one of the items that failed. So, maybe you just had a bit of bad luck?

FYI,

My charger was replaced last week for a new 1,2Kw one (not 1,3).
The enclosure/carboard case stated "Improved version"

So far seems to work fine…except now it is 1,2Kw...

It sounds like they've dialed it down to make it more reliable.

Agreed.

It would be good to know if other members that went through the replacement process got a 1,2Kw one…
I really miss DeltaQ ones :'(
