Title: 2014-2016 Battery Warranty
Post by: protomech on December 10, 2015, 08:48:32 PM
It appears that Zero offers a capacity retention guarantee on their power packs. This is actually one of the more generous warranties of its kind; Nissan is the only other EV manufacturer that I'm aware of that offers a similar protection, and their warranty protects against a 30% reduction.

Quote
Zero will only repair or replace pursuant to this Limited Warranty a Power Pack that exhibits a nominal storage capacity reduction of greater than 20% of the published nominal capacity, as measured by an authorized Zero dealer. To check the capacity of a Power Pack, an authorized Zero dealer can perform a battery management system log data extraction, which will confirm if a reduction is within expected norms.
This capacity warranty has been available since the 2014 models, which I previously missed.

New for the 2016 bikes, both the 2 year limited warranty and the 5 year power pack warranty have been extended by 90 days, to 2 years and 90 days and 5 years and 90 days respectively.

Warranty information is available in the owner manuals, available for model years 2010-2016 at Zero's site.

That brings me to a question I've been meaning to ask.
How much would anyone be willing to pay for an extended warranty for Zeros?
Either extended from point of purchase or as a "certified pre-owned" bike.

Knowing what i know now I'd spend $700-$1000 for a full top to bottom two year warranty extension for a total of four years transferable warranty.

Maybe $300-$500 just to cover the monolith for two more years.

I think that could really help resale value and thus help sell new bikes by taking away some of that depreciation anxiety for new buyers.

+1, especially now that I've got a dealer a half-hour away - and also since Zero did a great job honoring my (transferred) warranty already.

My question is, how exactly do you tell when you reach that <20% retention

When you get less than 80% of the advertised range (e.g. <56 miles at 70mph for a ZF11.4 bike). If you think you are below that go to a dealer and they can pull logs and confirm performance.

Interesting, I get less than half the advertised range, and have since the day I brought the bike home. Some of this is due to me putting the chain kit on and knobbie tires I am sure, but even when I was running the belt with the stock tires I never was able to get more than 40 miles out of the thing, even on eco.

Range will be largely based on speed and to a lesser extent rider weight, temperature .. but I would definitely expect more than 40 miles out of the FX if riding it gently at lower speeds (25-45 mph).

I have knobbies and chain on my '13 FX and I get about 50 miles highway if I hold it to 40 - 45 mph. on out and back rides.
