Energica / SS9+RS is just so much more fun than R1300GS
« on: May 19, 2024, 07:22:19 PM »
10 weeks ago I purchased a fully equipped BMW R1300GS for multi-day trips in the Swiss and French alps. While the chassis and electronic suspension of the R1300 is clearly superior to that of the SS9+RS (handling, response, damping, comfort) the drive-train of the SS9 is just so much better and more fun.

The R1300 with its 1300 ccm twin-cylinder boxer has more power (145 hp) and is considered a very high-torque bike (149 Nm). Still, the SS9 offers 33% more torque. And that is available almost from zero rpm and over a wider range. Moreover, the throttle response is smoother and better controllable leading to vastly improved riding dynamics. Twisty roads are fun galore with the Energica. At any time, the motor just pulls instantaneously. And regen breaking (2nd highest position) is ideal for following a perfecly smooth line.

So for me, the older concept beats the newer one in terms of sheer fun. For anything up to 200 km (asphalt) the SS9 is my preferred choice (with no highways at 20 degrees Celsius, I get 215 to 230 km out of the 21.5 kwh battery even when riding pretty actively and in the mountains). Yet, I've repeatedly had issues with non functional or occupied charging stations which is why I still have an ICE bike for longer tours abroad.

Energica / Re: FW version 43
« on: May 12, 2024, 06:29:11 PM »
Don is correct! I am wrong in this case. Firmware v.43 is not applicable to all Energica bikes. I asked around and found out that early VINs do not qualify. Like my bike. Thankfully I have a handy dandy qualification chart:

Quote
VIN numbers: ZNNP – ZNNR – ZNNT – ZNNL – ZNND – ZNNZ - ZNNF
These are the VIN prefix that can receive 043.

So check your bike if you have an older one, like me.

Thanks for the info. Didn't find that anywhere else. My SS9+RS seems to qualify (ZNNZ). Not sure if it's a good idea to update as it's running stable with version 42 and I don't want to risk that.

As the Ribelle/SS9 platform doesn't have a 6 axis IMU it would come to quite a suprise if there was a lean angle sensor. OTOH, the lack of a radar leaves no room for a different explanation. So color me puzzled.

@most Excellent information. Thanx.

Does not work on my 2020 Ribelle  :(

If you have the keyless option, it's just a matter of firmware.

I'd say the hikers' and bikers' reaction will depend on the style of using the horn. Pressing it long gives quite a different message than pressing it twice very shortly. If I were the addressee, I' certainly prefer the latter.

Just checked the Experia manual. For changing the pin, the bike must have been unlocked by the active or passive key. The master key is not needed in the process.

Edit, your instruction manual should have a section on it for how to do this.  You might need your master key to change your pin code the first time as well.

To my knowledge, the master key is not needed for changing the pin code. But not all manuals contain the respecive chapter as the code feature was added in a firmware revision (can't remeber which). Therefore, manuals of models released before that don't feature a description. But it can be found in newer digital versions of the manuals which are accessible by your dealer or in the documents section of the Energica facebook group.

And kudos to your dealer for personally sorting things out despite the 300km distance.

Looks exactly like the original. Have you replaced the upholstery with memory foam? And is it covered with real leather or leatherette/vinyl?

The don't even seem to be present with a booth. The only presence they show is outside the site: https://www.energicamotor.com/en/eicma-2023/

Energica / EICMA 2023 - No Energica news for 2024
« on: November 09, 2023, 05:09:24 PM »
Am I the only one disappointed that Energica doesn't have any new developments for the 2024 models of Ribelle, SS9+ and Ego? IMO, there is no reason to change the frame, suspension and motor, but there are some minor and major improvements and additions that I would have liked and expected to see:
- better placement of the cruise control switches
- automatic turn signal reset
- 6 axes IMU
- integrated navigation (hey, the new Royal Enfield Himalayan 452 for 7000 to 7500 USD offers Google Maps navigation as a standard feature)
- cruise control with radar
- blind spot assistant
The price for a basic Ribelle (not the RS version, no Öhlins suspension, no forged or carbon wheels, etc.) is CHF 28'900 (USD 32'000) in Switzerland. Its equipment is the sparsest of all manufacturers at this price point. Even premium brands such as Ducati and BMW offer far more. If Energica charges premium prices, they should offer a premium product. The latest innovations should at least be available as an option.

Energica / Re: Regen Question
« on: November 05, 2023, 01:46:57 PM »
For me on my SS9+RS the medium regen profile works best. I also manage the amount of regen breaking power by the throttle position. With the high regen setting I find it harder to find a smooth line with the bike. With a wider "span" I may be using the high position, too.

Ideally, this span would be an additional parameter that can be set in the profile screen. Alternatively, the span could be increased generally in firmware. I wouldn't want it to be changed in the medium profile, only in the high one.

Unexpectedly I got an answer to my email I sent to the German distributor of Regina, but it came on Friday afternoon when I already switched off my e-mail.
They offered to check the chain if I send it in at their cost and I might get a new one free of charge if they find that the chain's early demise was due to a production fault or similar. I would have really liked to see what the outcome of this is, but I already changed the chain and threw away the faulty one.

Nice move by the distributor. Too bad that you already disposed of the defective chain. But I can see that. Frustrated by the p*** poor quality, I probably would have done the same.

UPDATE AT 14,000 km

I hope someone in the US will sue and make them pay for this!

Sry to hear that. How about warranty?
