Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / 2010 Zero S Not charging
« on: May 10, 2023, 02:37:05 PM »
Just fitted a new battery pack ( after Nissan leaf packs blowing up and failing, not sure why) and now the DeltaQ charger won’t charge the bike ( tried 2 and both the same, straight to red light not even going up the 4 bar scale or to the 80% mark )
Voltage good at 52v so not under or over voltage, BMS does a single check beep self diagnosis when connected.
Stand switch is disabled
The bike powers on and actually moves but has the small red “warning LED” on permanent red 🤔
Want to know how to check the interlock function and try fooling the system. Is it a 5V negative feed to the interlock wire ?
What happens then? Does that make the BMS or MBB send a signal back to the charger to initiate charging ?
Any help or ideas appreciated

In general the Mars is more “revvy” and the perm is more “torqy”

3
The old 2010 Zero S refuses to fire up or charge now
It’s got a 6 blink red light code
Can anyone remember the blink codes ?
Hopefully useful to have a record of it for the future …

4
I have some DeltaQ chargers running the “1.11” algorithm that blink the red light when the battery is fully charged
BUT the ones with the 1.14 Algorithm don’t display the red fault LED when the battery is fully charged (58v)
Does anyone know the actually differences in the charge parameters of these two algorithms?
Using them on 2010 Zero x dc batteries and a Zero S

The temp sensor needs to be buried right inside the brush block where the heat is generated or else it will get too hot at its core and it will Fukushima on you before you are aware

Hi Doc
Ironically it was on here! ( somewhere a link ) but I can’t remember sorry l
Been doing some research on the old (pre 2012)  Zero wiring and want to run a theory past you to see if you agree
Apart from the battery temp and BMS cell balancing there are only Two other functions on the BMS board which are located on a separate connector block
1) battery interlock
Where a feed from the charger stops the bike being driven away for safety reasons
( this is why you can’t start it when it is charging )
2) Battery Temp sensor ( small brown and black wires from separate connector on the bMS )
Feeds back to the MBB to tell it battery temp ( maybe cut off if too hot )
This is the small extra twin connector on the Zero X & MX batteries
This can ( apparently ?) be shorted across to fool the MBB ?
*anyone remember the battery “DONGLE” zero made

Function of the MBB
Regulates the bike and calls the solenoid into action when all parameters are correct like temp, key switch, stand, motor temp.
Shows charge and blink Fault codes and solid green for armed, prompts battery to do double chirp for armed status
Generally the MBB is there to FOOL the Alltrax controller with reduced throttle input to limit performance and speed depending on which of the two switches is depressed

Do you agree?
Anything to add

Has anyone communicated with the bMS via the 8 pin connector ?

Thanks for that tip, I have ordered that lead from eBay it was £15.30 GBP
Do we understand the relationship between the MBB and the controller and how it does what it does ?
On the old X & MX models it has two switches which gave 4 modes
I am still trying to figure out what the extra small lead with the 2 wires in it on the zero X batteries
Once upon a time there was a plug in dongle for that that changed some perameters

Hi Adam
The throttles on these early bikes are rubbish
I regularly change them
Try getting a quality Domino 0-5K
Hope that helps
I also have a 2010 Zero S and mine also seems to have a fast speedo and have not sorted this yet
Can I ask what lead you bought for the alltrax?

9
Hi Adam
I am working off these
Got them online

Hi
Can’t get any BMS for my old Zero MX’s so will have to source an alternative BMS.
Does anyone know a compatible one ?
Failing that what do the brown and black wires do from the KSI to the MBB on the diagram?

I've made a set of electrical schematics for the bike, which are available on the Unofficial Manual: https://zeromanual.com/wiki/S_Platform/Schematic.
Wow, amazing work, thanks so much for doing that
Do you happen to know exactly what the Mbb ? Box does
Has the same on the x and Mx ( with switches and led )

Buy Sell Trade / Wanted old zero Mx or x batteries circa 2009-2011

Want them for the bMS mainly

13
Looking for a zero bMS
Just fried mine 👎🏻🙀
Would like a few for some other bike the same as well
It’s the aluminium end plate inside the battery

Hello
Sorry for the late reply
Just trying to give something back to the forum
I have done exactly that conversion
Just use all the standard bMS and it will all work fine
I am in England
Hope that helps
