General Discussion / Re: Musk the destroyer

What I would like to know is why did he get rid of the entire SuperCharger division?  Was it just to save money, did he have an axe to grind over some people in the division, or did it just feel good to screw over his employees and potentially the people that need to use the system in the future - like owners of Ford EVs? The guy is apparently really smart, but scary as a businessman and I sure wouldn't want to work for him.

But then I never understood from a financial point of view, why he bought Twitter and then pretty much destroyed it, so that it is now only worth a fraction of the price that he bought it for and only has a fraction of the former number of people using it. (Plus, calling it "X" makes it very awkward for anyone quoting a post from it.)

He is nuts.  Sorry Specter.  That's why I refuse to purchase anything he makes, and would never work in any of his ventures (unless my life depended on it :) ).

When I "woke up" the bike I saw the "firmware update available" message and figured, why not, I had nowhere to be, so I clicked OK.  The console switched to a cool new "Updating Firmware" message.  2 Hours later, same message and no progress, and my Key would not respond (I could not turn the bike off).  I figured if I plugged in the L2 charger, perhaps it would trick the bike into a reset, and that worked (good news, no trip to the dealer!).  When I unplugged the charger I could turn the bike on and off again normally.

I was then able to use the app (iOS) to update BMS and MBB to the latest without issue (what I should have done in the first place).  So, if you get stuck like I did, plugging in the charge port might get you back to normal.

Then I cleared the error code 8 using the menu on the bike and went for a ride.

DON'T FORGET THE FROZEN CHARGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    PANT PANT GASP !!!!!

I don't know how many times the car failed to start in the cold because of water in the gas line, not to mention the fuel economy goes to shit on both EV's and ICE when you load them up.  That's just a physics thing,  oh the inconvenient truths!  Let's not forget the pumps not even working because they are froze up.

Here's something they won't tell you about EV's in the cold,  you get your heat Right  NOW.  You don't have to wait 25 minutes for the engine to warm up before you can start warming up! :)

BTW when the power is out because of a hurricane,  HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CHARGE ASSHOLE !!!!!!!     Umm.... the same way your pump at the gas station will run,, ASSHOLE...  Oh wait,  You will have to wait 3 weeks for them to re run the grid to the station because everything was flattened.  My panels still work, I literally can throw them out in the yard and oh hey look, my vehicle is charged and I can get around.  Maybe I'll swing by to make sure you are ok and bring some hot coffee to you.

Aaron

I've been fast charging my Ioniq 5 for a year now, and it never takes more than 25 minutes to go from below 20% to 80+% SOC (even when it's cold out, and at a 150KW charger (the car would be faster on a 350KW charger).  I'm only fast charging since it's free.  If I were level 2 charging it takes no time (as we all know, plug in when you are not using it and it's always ready).  The battery has a 10 year warrantee (so I'm not so worried about that either).  It's amazing how well the oil industry has done pumping misinformation into the market, and how suckers are willing to take it at face value.

You are spot on on the heat, it is warm in the cabin super fast!

Yep, same old tired points.  I agree 100% that the charging networks could be better, especially here on the east coast, but it's not often I NEED a fast charger anyway.

I can't wait until some of the potential battery technologies are in shipping (solid state etc.) that give cars 1000 mile range and can charge in 10 minutes, then what will the EV haters have to complain about?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: No NAV on 2020 SRF? New battery
« on: January 20, 2024, 11:22:27 PM »
Hello all, I’ve been very fortunate to get a new battery under warranty. I also have my dashboard updated and got the parking mode installed. I was under the impression that I could get turned by turn guidance also, but the dealership is telling me that that is only available on 2021 or later models? Anyone have any experience with this? Why should 2021 be different than 2020?

I have it installed on my 2020 SR/F, but as others have mentioned, it is not worth the trouble.  I can't get it to stay connected to the phone for more than 15-20 minutes.  Kind of useless.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: 2020 SR/S Buying Considerations
« on: December 27, 2023, 06:19:19 PM »
Hello,

New to the forum and to e-bikes.

I've started looking into buying a used SR/S and have found a few 2020 Premium models within reasonable distance. Mileage on the bikes varies from a few hundred to a few thousand. What are the important things to consider when looking at used Zeros? Not so much the things common to any used bike but what's specific to the SR/S?

I've read some of the past posts that describe problems with charging rates/accuracy/magic charging/charger failures but can't get an idea of how prevalent those were. For example, should I expect to have the battery pack and/or on-board charger fail prematurely?

We have an EV car now and I'd expect that I'll usually charge the Zero with the J1772 adapter.

If they have an original battery, avoid them.  Many have been replaced at this point with '22 batteries that should be more reliable.  If they have the original battery, it will probably fail very soon.  Other than the battery issue with the 2019/2020 models, I think they have been fairly reliable (my 2020 SRF has been anyway, since it got the new battery).

Merry Christmas everyone and best wishes for a happy New Year.

Back at you Richard!  Thanks for all the contributions this year.

Took about 2 months for me to get a new Battery for my 2019 SR/F Premium, not that bad considering.  I hope the battery manufacturer is helping with the warrantee costs, that has to be an ugly number ($$$).  My bike has been better than ever since the new battery.  The new plastics were a nice bonus since I had some scratches on the lower ones from letting the bike roll off the kickstand onto it's side once.  Now if I could only ride more (the bike has been put to bed for the winter).

I wonder if this problem will end up hitting all the early bikes?

Steve

The batteries in my daughter's Zero 2014 S and my 2018 S are still working as well as they ever did.  :)

I mean the early SR/F's.  Should have been more clear on that.

Glad you got it, the bike looks great.  How was the charging speed?

General Discussion / Re: Electric motorcycle fire
« on: December 01, 2023, 05:40:37 PM »
So it was an ICE motorcycle that was having its battery charged that caught on fire? I can't recall hearing about something like that happening before.  ???  I wonder if my newspaper will correct that article this morning. If it does, I will report back. But I agree, it is a lot more interesting to the public when they hear about an EV catching fire. If another ICE vehicle catches fire, who cares?  ::)  It happens all the time.  ;)
All it takes is a gas leak and a spark

EV fires

Interesting that the hybrids are so much higher (percentage).  More chances for gas + spark?

The Zero customer support person asked that I ride the bike from 100% down to less than 10%, then let it sit for a hour or so, then grab the logs.  At that point it was off to the dealer for a new battery.  My SOC went up a bunch in that hour (I forget the exact numbers, but it was significant).  The new battery has been great so far, much better range and very consistent SOC.  It feels like a new bike. (my firmware was way out of date as well and it all got updated, I like the new dash and picked up parking mode as well).

General Discussion / Re: Ham radio ops here?
« on: October 16, 2023, 05:56:20 PM »
Good to see a couple of ham's lurking here! (AA6GA and KJ4GNK).  I used 2M quite a bit when I commuted every day to Boston from Southeastern NH every day (1 hour each way), but once I moved to remote most of the time (full time remote now), I did not install the 2M rig when I switched cars last time.

Don, I never got into CW, I did do 5WPM for my Novice in the 5th grade (WD9FOK), and when I got my Technician after college in the mid 80's (N1FWN), but never went any further with code.  I think I've made 2-3 CW contacts in my ham radio career on 40m.  My hat is off to you for keeping CW going.  I got my Extra shortly after the code was lifted.  My son got his Extra this weekend, and he pretty much got me back into the hobby (building stuff in my basement).  He's a EE (I am as well).

Aaron,  Sorry to hear 2M has gone in that direction.  I know there are plenty of lid's on 80m and 40m these days as well, pretty sad.  Still lots of solid operators on HF though.  I do phone from 160m-10m a few times a week, most of the time on 20m.  I had a HF mobile setup along with my 2m rig when I operated from the car.  I had an 857d and an ATAS 120 (worked pretty well).  I used the same rig for 2M and 440 back then.

Seems Ham radio is a bit of a dying hobby based on the average age of the attendees at this last weekends ham-fest locally.

K1SCQ here, I only operate HF from home these days (used to do a lot of 2m mobile, but not any more).  I only operate SSB phone for the most part with an occasional foray into AM on the low bands.  I've got a home-made dual FET (LDMOS) linear amp driven by a FT-DX3000 into either a ground mounted multi-band vertical or a 160M folded dipole (with a home-made tuner).

I just got back from NEAR-FEST (New England Amateur Radio Festival) on Friday and Saturday.  It's our local ham-fest/swap meet.

Nice to have the vehicle to load on my Ioniq-5 for powering new purchases and to demo stuff we are selling from the tailgate!  The SR/F did not make the trip this year.

I haven't tried it yet, but wanted to see how the rest of you are using it.  I assume this doesn't give you voice instructions, right?  Or am I wrong on that?  If it doesn't, are any of you using another nav app at the same time to get both?

It does give voice instructions from the phone, but I don't wear my earphones on the bike so could not really hear it clearly.  The on dash display is quite good (simple but good).  I like the system overall, just need it to stay connected.

Hi. Did you set for your Zero Next Gen App your battery parameters on "No restriction" (if you are on Android) ?

I'm on iOS, and it stayed on for a full 50 minute trip today, so it seems sort of hit and miss.
