Pics and Vids / Custom Zero DS paint repost from 2015
« on: October 19, 2019, 06:20:09 AM »
Reposting my 2014 Zero DS paint, with matching helmet and leathers. Hoping to to encourage others to share their electric creations!

I posted these photos 5 years ago, of my bathypelagic angler viperfish and gas plasma lure fish-fairing. The seat is ostrich leather by a local auto seat upholsterer. There is a SoundRacer system with twin 40w speakers and a shelby cobra profile! I installed the plasma generators and black-anodized most silver mechanical parts, and it's totally cool at night!

I wear a shark modular helmet painted as a deep sea diver hardhat, and my leathers have patches I designed, of angler wrangler demolition company, founded the first year of electric motorcycle patent in 1895.

I have 2 of the 2014 DS. One of them has a charging issue that BMW/Zero of San Jose has, so far, been unable to repair. When not using the bike for >10 days, or so, the display will be flashing, as in this youtube:

Turning the bike power key has no influence. Unplugging the AC charging cable, then turning the bike switch on and off, will reset the display to a normal mode. Sometimes, the charge indication is as low as 90%, if the bike was unused for several weeks. New FW was installed 2 months ago, and still a problem.

The bike, otherwise, is fine. But, it is a hassle to remember to unplug it, then plug it back in the night before a ride. Anyone else have a similar problem? Perhaps the contactor unit? I'll bring it back to the BMW/Zero shop soon, and offer any suggestions. Thanks!

I posted these photos 18 months ago, and someone that saw my posting in the loud pipes thread suggested I repost a few photos of my bathypelagic angler viper fish and gas plasma lure. Daneen, of Custom Air Brush, http://www.customairbrush.com/ ,  in San Jose air-brushed the fairing, tank, and tailpiece. The seat is ostrich leather by a local auto seat upholsterer. There is a SoundRacer system with twin 40w speakers and a shelby cobra profile ! No longer available , and I installed the plasma generators and black-anodized most silver mechanical parts.

A friend of mine stepped off his bike as it started leaning over too far over while stopped on a hill. The motor accelerated and the wheel started spinning at moderate, and accelerating, speed. We flipped the kill switch, lifted it up, and it has been operating normally since then, around 3 months and 300 mi.

I believe the throttle is a potentiometer, and so there is no cable to pull. The throttle is on the right side, and that was the side facing up and not touching anything. The throttle has good return response. Anyone have a similar experience? Not an issue, more a curiosity on how it could occur.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / DS power usage correlation
« on: September 07, 2014, 11:50:44 PM »
My wife and I have enjoyed riding our 2014 DS bikes through the redwood forests on the southern San Francisco peninsula. She has an 11.4 DS and I have the powertank 14.2 DS. Mine has the sporty windscreen and the "torque" 25T drive sprocket, all that add drag, weight, and moving the motor into the less efficient part of the power-torque-rpm curve.

My wife and her bike weigh approximately 485-500 lbs. My bike and I weigh approximately 585-600 lbs, approximately 20% more than my wife.

She has ridden approximately 200 miles and her app indicates a power usage of 84 watts/mi. I have ridden 1300 miles, approximately 6-10% at freeway speeds of 70mph, with the rest in the same conditions as her riding and my app usage indicates 106 watts/mi.

So, under these conditions (terrain, speed, weight, bike mods), it appears that power usage closely tracks weight with ~20% more weight translating to ~20% more power requirements. A moderate component associated with the powertank weight would indicate the powertank provides ~20% more power, or just enough to offset the additional weight increase, of which ~40% is powertank related.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Helmet paint
« on: August 21, 2014, 05:29:18 AM »
I've seen a few really nice paintings on the fairing, tank, and helmets of Zero and other electric bike owners. The references are scattered across a few postings, so I thought to start a new posting for my rider protection system. I really like the carbon fiber paint job here: http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=1272.msg3261#msg3261

I'm a high-time scuba-diver and I enhanced my riding suit and helmet as that of a hardhat diver, and in recognition of the Jules Verne novels (and "Wild Wild West" movie), the basis for SteamPunk "Victorian Futurism". I've attached a few images of the helmet below. The date is that of the first American electric motorcycle patent (1895), with the bike produced a year later. It is a Shark evoline helmet that is certified open or closed and the design shifts to accommodate both positions.

Yes, that is corrosion on the rivets, both zinc and green cuprous oxide, and there are water droplets on the top and back side, where they are being blown off in the wind. Also a few "dings" and scratches are included. I also have a Sena intercom system installed and not shown.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Sound System on 2014 DS
« on: August 20, 2014, 07:27:39 AM »
I've recently completed the installation of an Electric Vehicle Sound System, specifically the SoundRacer EVSMA-1 at http://eveess.com/evsm-2/ . I mounted the sound generation unit under the tank, and on top of the powertank battery. The speakers fit very well on the sides of the headlight, allowing room for the forks to turn without hitting the tank. The speakers are 3" and 20W (20W/channel on the EVSMA1 module). I coupled the high-beam switch to a relay that provides a ground signal for the unit, so flashing the high-beams will cause the Shelby Cobra idle sound to rev. The hall effect sensors, mounted to the front wheel, provide a programmable rate increase in the sound. I'll black-anodize the speaker mounting spacers, as I have most unpainted parts on the bike.

It's loud and lots of bass. It lacks some of the treble I expected from the unit, and the resin-cone speakers may be reason.

I understand Doc has a sound system. Does anyone else have an experience with them to share?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Seat change

Has anyone replaced the stock seat on a DS/S/SR?

My 2014 DS seat was quite uncomfortable on moderately-rough mountain roads in the Santa Cruz mountains. Not many miles, around 80/trip, but a few hours of time encouraged me to replace my seat. I found good reviews of an antique/classic/high-end sports car seat upholstery business on the SF Peninsula, and the owner is an avid touring bike rider.

Required 2 weeks of shop time for 2 days of work time, but the quality is very nice. I selected black Buffalo side seat leather and tan ostrich top seat area leather. It was laid over an additional 1/2" - 2" of the pink foam used for final seat comfort and flexibility. It's also 4" wider and flatter with a corresponding lower weight/area loading factor. I like it,  and now have no complaints. I've painted the bike blue

Has anyone else replaced/upgraded the seat?
