Home Brew / Re: Ride Data
« on: January 19, 2012, 05:23:06 AM »
Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. holiday so I tinkered with the bike, and swapped out the 300 amp controller with the new(er) 450 am controller, and I am pleasantly pleased.  First of all the 450 is about 2 inches longer so I had to mount it vertically instead of horizontally, but that's neither here nor there.  The important thing is that even with only 4 lead acid batteries (48 volts) the bike is much quicker and I can get up to just shy of 40 mph.  I weigh 200lbs so that is pretty darn good.  I can't wait to add the other two batteries for my ultimate 72 volt goal / system... stay tuned.

So I spent the last umpteen months waiting on an affordable Alltrax AXE7245 450a 24-72v controller to show up on eBay and it finally did, for $275 (including shipping) = score!

So my new (used) controller arrived yesterday.

I found out you use the same 3A diode for 200A and up contactors so we are good there, however I am using a 470 ohm 10W resistor now and I need the 1000 Ohm 10W for the 72 volt system.  Does that mean I don’t need to change until I add two more batteries?  Right now I just want to try the new controller with my existing four 12 volt lead acid batteries, ie 48 volt system.

I got that out of the manual.......all ya gotta do is read the manual, it tells you within the first 10 pages what they are.

That's my point, you don't got the manual until you buy one, and 10 pages to tell you what Alltrax does in 7 digits, come on man, lol

thank you for responding, I was just making a point that sometimes companies/manufacturers do things the hard way, it's like Ford using the "Z" to signify Mustang parts, go figure, lol

Go to your profile and at the botom you will find a link "show latest posts by this person" (or something similar)

http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=98;sa=showPosts

Does that do it?

Nope, that only works for yourself not for others, if I look at your profile I don't get the options on the left hand side, dang it, thank you for trying to help.  I'm not ranting I just didn't want to go on living like this if there was a simple way to do it, and I just didn't know how, lol

Home Brew / Re: Batteries, (heard of these?)
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:03:18 AM »
hi the gixxer will make a fantastic platform for a conversion with it's lightweight aluminum frame, if you can make a battery tray out of aluminum that will be a bonus

40Ah batteries will not give you a range of 40 miles, especially not at the 50 MPH speed, maybe 10 miles with a top speed of 40 mph depending on gearing ie number of teeth on your sprockets

you connect batteries in either one of two ways (well you can do a hybrid but lets keep it simple)

First way... Series

12 x 6 volts = 72 volts (the amp hours stay the same so 40 Ah is the total amp hours)

Second way... Parallel

12 x 40 Ah = 480 Ah but volts stay the same and at 6 volts you are not goinng anywhere, lol

Third Serial Parallel solution could look something like this

6 x 6 volts for a 36 volt system then parallel that with the other 6 batteries x 6=36 volts also  so then 40 AH x 2 = 80 AH

you would end up with a slow bike that goes twice as far, lol

Home Brew / 12 to 13 Tooth Front Sprocket - Nothing to Write Home About
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:15:51 AM »
Replaced the 12 tooth front sprocket with a 13 tooth one on my 1989 Suzuki Katana GSX600F yesterday.  The rear is the original stock 47 tooth one.  I didn't have to add any links to the chain after adding 3 or 4 initially for the conversion as the motor sits further away than the engine/transmission had.

I think I may be getting 2 MPH more on the top speed maybe a little more somewhere around high 30's, ie 38 MPH.  The good news is the bike is not any slower off the line.  So I question all the people who told me electric bikes need to run a 5:1 gear ratio, that or I misunderstood their advice.

Bike Specs:
  • Mars ME0709 motor (heavy)
  • 48 Volt Alltrax 300 amp controller (soon to be upgraded to 72 volts)
  • four 55 Ah sealed lead acid batteries (soon to be six)
  • 48 volt Elcon 20 amp on board charger (awesome)
  • Magura Twist Grip Throttle (kinda cheap and plasticky)
[/size]

Don't use the search box at the top right, use the advanced search at the top, in between Help and Profile:

http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?action=search

Did you forget to put something to search for?

That's what I am complaining about, that search doesn't do it, it does NOT allow you to search for all threads by a certain person unless you put something in the Search for: box, well heck if I knew what the dude put in the Subject than I would not be searching for all his posts, lol

Try finding every thread that I have started, the name is "Gregski" please

welcome, having done a conversion, all I have to say is just do it, you can read stuff till you are blue in the face and the books won't tell you that although you spent 8 hours measuring and cutting your metal to the absolute perfection that once you weld your battery tray the darn batteries won't fit cause the metal has shrunk 1/32 of an inch, I'm just sayin' lol

also all the formulas in the world, pies, ratios, all that stuff are fine and dandy, but they don't account for hills, wind, low tire pressure, highway overpasses, blond chics in convertibles with haulter tops, you having stopped at In n Out Burger prior to your ride - in determining your top speed and range

I am being silly, but one message I want to send to you guys is, ALLOW YOURSELF PERMISSION TO MAKE MISTAKES, and learn from them, correct them, and move on, don't expect to get everything wright on the first try, nor sit and wait, and put things off until all the friggen stars align, you'll be waiting for ever

take your time, and go for it, you can do it !!!

Curtis 1236 is a small series of curtis AC controller. There is a 6301 which is 300A and 72V, there is a 6501 which is 550A and 48V.
Curtis 1238 is a large series of curtis AC controller. There is a 6501 (550A 72V), 7501 (550A 96V) and a 7601 (650A 96V).

Likewise, can you provide an example they don't do this? I'm curious.

Well how the heck do you get that out of 1236?  I guess I am just too simple minded, lol.  All I am saying is that Alltrax does this:

Model: AXE4834

AXE = programmable

48 means 48 volts

3 means 300 amps

4 means form factor or something like that

see this stuff makes sense to me, you can easily make out what a AXE7234 is

AXE = programmable, 72 volts, 3 = 300 amps, 4 some size of the heat sync vs another

Don't get me wrong I don't own Alltrax stock or nothin' and I would love to buy a Curtis but I am not going to take a night class at a JC just to learn their model numbers, lol plus I don't want to drop $750 bones on their proprietary programmer thingie, but that's another thread/post

400+ seems high, but those are peak values, not sustained. I think it's a 300A all day controller. You may see some small spikes that go that high. How long do the 400A peaks sustain?

You are once again correct.  I went back and looked at the data and I saw 2 second spans where the Output Current was above 300 amps, however it was only above 400 amps for a split second if that

I have to say I love this stuff, I enjoy analyzing the data, and would highly recommend newbies get programmable controllers or some sort of controllers that allow them to connect a laptop to and or display of some sorts and see what the machine is doing, have I not done this with my laptop I would wrongly assume my controller is spewing only up to 300 amps, which is not the case

I am still sorta not ok with something being rated at 300 amps and putting out 420, it's like saying hey this cars top speed is 135 MPH but you know sometimes it goes 160 MPH, lol

thanks again for your help and explanations much appreciated, much !

General Discussion / How to search for all posts by a specific user?
« on: September 16, 2011, 08:53:23 PM »
One of the features I use a lot is the search by user.  You come across a guy who knows what he is talking about and  you want to see all the threads he has started, or posts he has made giving advice.  Or you simply want to search for all the threads you have started to see if there are any new replies.  How do you do that.

The search on this forum does not allow for a wild card search in the Search for: field when you enter a users name in the by user: field.

I am not biatchin n complainin, trust me the insight on this forum is amazing and I appreciate it, I am just asking how to do something that I can do on a lot of if not all of the other forums I am a member of, so I know i am not asking for something strange
