General Discussion / Musk the destroyer
« on: May 02, 2024, 07:21:14 PM »
So what is up with Musk - again?  The day after California's governor proclaimed that Ford and a couple of other auto brands would now be able to access Tesla Superchargers, news reports are saying that Musk fired his entire Supercharger installation and maintenance department, even the interns that were working in that division. As usual, everyone, including the workers and likely even the governor were blindsided by his action. What a guy!

Here is a review by Revzilla of the 2023 (?) Ryvid Anthem electric motorcycle, a brand that I have never heard of before - likely because it is a recent startup:  https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2023-ryvid-anthem-launch-edition-first-ride-review

General Discussion / Today's Tesla news
« on: April 06, 2024, 03:16:08 AM »
This afternoon it was reported that Tesla has finally given up on the idea of manufacturing a BEV for around $25K. If it was me I would have given up on that idea, which was announced four years earlier, long ago.  ::)

Musk says the report is a lie.

My local radio news station this morning reported that the Marin County (one of the wealthiest areas in California) police are complaining that parents are buying their children and teenagers "electric motorcycles" instead of bicycles. The children then go zipping around at 30 to 40 mph terrorizing neighborhoods and off-road trails. Needless to say, they don't have a license to ride them because they are not old enough. The cops are begging the county's parents to not buy these vehicles for their kids as they are dangerous and the kids don't have the skills or knowledge to ride them in traffic. (I guess they are making this request because enforcement to control this activity is too difficult for the cops and they don't want to try chasing the kids around neighborhood streets, bike paths and off-road trails.)

My neighbor bought one of these Class 3+ electric bicycles for his pre-teen boy. That thing really zips along and will pull up the hill in front of my home at 35 mph while carrying a passenger. (My Aniioki ebike chugs up the hill at only 8 mph, but it is much heavier.)

I just finished listening to a 30-minute radio interview on my local SF Bay Area radio station regarding the future of electric vehicles in California.  Not once were motorcycles mentioned. Which reminded me that I have been following the electric motorcycle industry since 2007 and in all of that time I have never heard electric motorcycles mentioned even once on a public radio of TV broadcast station. Even politicians, who sometimes like to complain about ICE motorcycle noise, never suggest that buying an electric motorcycle would solve that issue for your neighborhood. I also can't recall ever seeing an ad in a magazine or on the internet, unless it was a motorcycle-specific venue or program.

It makes me wonder how the electric motorcycle industry is ever going to expand to a point where it becomes popular with the public if no one outside the industry ever hears about the advantages of riding and owning an electric motorcycle, even if it is just for commuting?

General Discussion / GM is watching you
« on: March 20, 2024, 03:35:30 AM »
There was a kind of long and scary article in my newspaper today written by Kashmir Hill and published by The New York Times, titled "Autos share insurance reports about drivers". It says that new GM cars are collecting information on every movement that you make when driving your car. It is then sent to a NY global data  broker company called LexisNexis who then packages your driving experience into a long report (one report was 258 pages long). That report is then sent to insurance companies that contract with them.

In the article's example, the report for a driver owning a GM Bolt included 130 pages detailing the dates of his 640 vehicle trips, including start and end times, an accounting of any speeding, hard braking or sharp accelerations. The only information that the report didn't contain was where the car was driven. The article mentioned that Honda, Kia and Hyundai also collect driver information, but it was mostly about GM's OnStar Smart Driver system.

One Cadillac owner had his insurance doubled after he was unable to get seven insurance companies to provide him with a policy. An owner of a Corvette was caught speeding on a track day at a race track and apparently ended up with a black mark on his insurance driving record.

I think BMW currently collects this kind of information on their latest motorcycles and I wouldn't put it past them to share it with a data broker sometime in the future - unless the EU puts a stop to this sort of data sharing.

General Discussion / San Francisco lithium batery charging rules
« on: March 10, 2024, 07:53:52 PM »
San Francisco just has adopted new lithium battery charging rules. However, they are limited to charging in apartments and batteries for small devices and personal mobility vehicles. Here is a link to the news story. Of course, how they would be enforced is not discussed. I assume that if there ever is a fire caused by someone charging a lithium battery in an apartment, the lawyers and insurance companies will get involved and enforce the rules in civil court after the fact:

General Discussion / Ionna charging network news
« on: March 04, 2024, 05:14:44 AM »
An article in my newspaper today (copy attached) says that BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kai, Mercedes and Stellantis are joining up to create a new L3 network along major highways in the U.S. The first charging station will open this year and the venture hopes to build 30K charging stations running by 2030. They plan to make them more reliable than the ones currently available and make payment more streamlined than what is currently the case for most L3 networks by allowing easy payment using just a credit card.

Ionna plans to provide shelters, refreshments and bathrooms at their facilities. Hopefully, the joint venture will succeed.

Electric Motorcycle News / The last three days of Hollywood Electrics
« on: February 08, 2024, 09:00:30 PM »
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be the last three days that Hollywood Electrics will be open. They will be selling everything in their store this weekend and that will be the end of the business. They say that "everything must go". Sale hours are 11 AM to 7 PM each day, according to an email that I received this morning. They say that if your Zero Motorcycle ever needs Service you can contact Tyler Bojarsky, by appointment only, who is now located at MotoWerkz.

General Discussion / GM to make hybrids again
« on: January 31, 2024, 07:56:26 PM »
I heard a short news headline yesterday that mentioned that due to demand from both their customers and dealers, GM will be marketing a hybrid car again, like the long-lamented Volt that they axed shortly after they introduced the Bolt.

General Discussion / VW's "dieselgate DC charger installation news
« on: January 24, 2024, 11:45:18 PM »
Here is interesting news regarding VW's "dieselgate" requirement to install 1000 DC fast chargers throughout California. Apparently they are not working very well. I guess you get what you pay for.  Page 1.

According a news report yesterday, the California Public Utility Commission is moving forward with a plan that would charge the state's electric utility rate payers a flat fee (tax?) based upon their income, in addition to the cost of the electric power that they use each month. The report said that the idea is not going over very well with many of the state's residents as the word starts getting around. No doubt more detailed news will follow soon.

A former PUC president who was being interviewed yesterday on the local radio news station, KCBS, and was trying to explain the plan, mentioned that Governor Newsom backed the idea. She also said that a bill supporting this rate plan was passed by the state's legislators at the last minute and signed into law late last year without any sort of public hearing or public input. But it still needs to be approved by the state's PUC, which they could do this summer.

If this rate plan, which was originally proposed by PG&E, is approved by the PUC, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that even utility customers who do not use any electricity would also be billed for this flat income "fee" each month.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Module Variance Too High warning lights
« on: January 16, 2024, 08:20:26 PM »
I hadn't ridden my 2018 Zero with Power Tank for the past month. When I turned it on yesterday the SOC indicated 72% (a month ago it was at 90%).  I was also greeted with warning lights. A repeating pattern of two and then five more. Pulling out my Zero manual I found that red triangle warning light pattern is noting that the bike's "Module Variance Too High". The owner's manual says to contact either Zero or my dealer to resolve the problem. Not wanting to do that, I thought about it a bit and decided that "module variance too high" likely meant that the individual battery packs were out of balance. I first checked the Zero battery app and it showed pack voltages being 1-3 mA differences. But I thought that the app might be missing something, like the Power Tank. So I plugged in the bike using the OBC and 40 minutes later the SOC was up to 80% and the warning lights were off and things are looking normal again. That saved me a trip to my Zero dealer. I assume that recharging the battery packs a bit brought them back into a better balance.

General Discussion / Hertz dumping 20K EVs into the used car market
« on: January 13, 2024, 08:30:00 PM »
I saw an article in my newspaper recently (which I managed to misplace) that said that Hertz was selling off 20,000 of their electric rental cars. They gave several reasons for doing so, such as the cost to maintain them, the cost to repair them, the fact that they were getting into accidents more than their ICE cars, and the rapid drop in resale value of the cars. The article seemed to imply that Tesla's were the thorn in their side.

Other recent articles have said that the public's interest in buying EVs is dropping. Interestingly, yesterday I heard a radio news report which reported that Toyota was designing and planned to manufacture a new type of ICE engine. It is starting to look like the vehicle market is not going to be ready for many countries mandate that no more ICE-powered cars be sold starting in 2035 (or earlier in some cases).
