General Discussion / EV Crash Safety
« on: May 24, 2018, 05:56:08 AM »
In electric motorcycles and cars, what safety equipment is in place (if any) to prevent arcing, short-circuiting or electrocution in the event of a crash that destroys the batteries? Obviously nothing will prevent this if the batteries are thrown from the vehicle, but in a conventional accident what keeps the vehicle safe to handle?

This has nothing to do with Obama.  He has no control over Georgia state taxes, that's the voters job. Decades ago Georgia was failing the EPA's clean air standards, so they made some EV incentives to compensate.  As a result, Atlanta became a major hub for Nissan Leaf sales.  Last year Georgia law makers got rid of the the incentives, and placed a $200 annual fee/tax on all EVs (roughly a years worth of gas taxes from the average SUV) regardless of miles driven.  You're a GA resident and EV driver, you should have been aware of this, it was on every EV website.

CA will continue to do good things for the environment for the next few years, doesn't mean Trump is responsible for it.

Brammo Forum / Re: Any news on a new Victory for 2017?
« on: November 05, 2016, 01:14:41 PM »
Lightning has soldd at least one production unit a few years ago, but they've been out of the headlines ever since.  I doubt they have a 20k option in the works the way Energica does.

As far as Apple's poaching from Mission, I find it much more likely that some of Mission's employees left them because after 10 years of hype they still didn't have a production model.

Model Year- 2015
Model- FX 5.7
Purchase date (mo/yr)- 5/15
Mileage- 5300mi
Modifications? If so, what?- Givi top case (not through Zero), crash bars and mirrors.
Primary terrain during use (city, highway, dirt, combo, etc)- city, rarely off roads
Max/min/average ambient temperatures during use- 45-55, commuting with a lot of highway miles.

No real issues, although it sometimes underestimates the SOC while recharging, making me panic.  Its ran out of juice twice, both due to my mistakes.

Alta Motorcycles / Re: Drop test

To be fair to Zero (if they were to fail that test), the Japanese gas bikes didn't survive either.

Was the bike rideable after that? (As in were the forks bleeding or the wire spokes damaged?)

When I was getting insurance, they said there was some formula for converting kWh to cc for legal paperwork. No idea what it is though.

Same here.  I've gotten into the habit of frequently disengaging the turn indicators, just in case they're still on.

Brammo Forum / Victory Empulse in Monterey
« on: August 21, 2016, 06:08:47 AM »
It's Concourse week in Monterey, and there was a zero emissions display earlier this week near the Aquarium.  A few Zero owners showed up and there was even a Zero police bike.  There was a Victory Empulse set up on display, but no one to talk to. The dealership just dropped it off and left! It sounds like that has been typical of Victory dealerships from what I hear.

All the Zero's use similar rear suspension setups, so one spanner wrench will work for all of them.  It's a tight for for the s and ds models, and for the FX and FXS, you need to remove the rear battery to get access.

Electric Motorcycle News / Zero's 10 year anniversary
« on: June 02, 2016, 02:52:04 AM »
Zero just made this post about their 10 year anniversary,

They also announced that their free fuel for live offer is extended through the end of June.  At what point does it become clear that it will also be good through July... and August and November?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Rally fairing on an FX
« on: May 29, 2016, 12:57:38 AM »
I also wonder if taking the mass of the headlights and gauge assembly off of the forks has any noticeable effects on the steering and response.  Its the same logic as reducing unsprung weight to improve the suspension characteristics, right?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Rally fairing on an FX
« on: May 28, 2016, 11:34:43 PM »
I know its unusual, but I love the way those tall enduro/rally fairings look on dual sport bikes, particularly those from KTM.

I think my FX would look great with one of these.  Does anyone have any ideas for what would fit on the FX's frame?

Any chance Corbin will make a seat for the FX?  ;D

we need fun
FXSR
one FX supermotard with the motor of the SR
program : weeling and stoppy
FX with a good battery graphene batterie 15 kwh
power 50kw torque 150nm
wight 120kg max
tire 150/60 at the back to have choise to put what we want
wheel 4.25 and 3.50
good break 4 cylinder radial

So you want an FXS with 3x the battery capacity, twice the torque and you want it to weigh less than what it currently does.  If such a bike does exist, how much would you be willing to pay for it?

I found it rather compelling. Some relatives of mine are considering buying an EV, and have asked me for advise.  But when I start to discuss the details, they're very resistant.  They start talking about trunk space, interior quality and the BMW i3's gas range as if they're nonstarters.  A lot of people say they're serious about reducing their carbon footprint, but when it comes time to trade in their car or bike and put they're money where there mouth is, they make a list of excuses just like this guy.
