So the Charge Tank in Europe currently still has a J-plug input while Mennekes is the standard here. No problem with 99% of the chargers that require to use your own cable anyway but quick chargers have the Mennekes lead already on the charger.

There are L2-L1 adapters:

But they are a bit bulky as you can see. I found this adapter

Which has the perfect form factor but as you can see is the wrong way around. Has anybody ever spotted a compact L2-L1 adapter like above?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Owning a Zero on an island
« on: June 22, 2018, 02:50:03 AM »
Hi all,

This week I heard that I will be deployed to a small Caribbean Island(60km on the long side) for the coming three years, yay! And also there are no electric vehicles apart from golf carts on that island, boo!

I'm selling the DS because the whole fairing and quick charge business is pretty much useless over there, and with crappy roads and lots of off road fun I'm planning to import a FX from the states. I like the belt but with the nearest dealer thousands of km away I think the chain is a better option. I should be able to cover most of the island with a 7.2 FX and with a modest quick charger(2kW) I should be able to charge from a regular outlet and do the last end home if needed.

I do however worry a bit about long term maintenance and possible warranty things. I'm technical enough to do all the work myself but what if Zero insists that I go through a dealer for certain things?

IIRC some folks here have Zero's that are on a remote island, how do you fair with them?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Vortex generators
« on: May 14, 2018, 02:33:46 AM »
A lot of us have windscreens and other fairing pieces attached to the bike. Helmet buffering is a bit of a problem on my fairing and as far a I know most windscreens are pretty loud.

An old solution are those lips(or the new version of them but vortex generators also seem to work pretty good, and you can play a bit more with them and also install them on the lower parts of eg. a dustbin. They are widely used on aeroplanes and race cars so the idea behind them seems legit.

This article also mentions it: https://canadamotoguide.com/2016/05/04/motorcycle-aerodynamics/

A bag of them shouldn't cost more than a few euro so I'm considering ordering a few models to see what works best.

Your thoughts?

And by that I mean not jacking it up for maintenance but like with a proper crane and all. The manual doesn't mention it but I guess the best way might be to put the straps through either the hole on the swingarm or beneath the seat and a sturdy point near the front fork?

Parts, Mods And Hacks / Spliceable belt?

Look what I stumbled upon, a spliceable toothed belt from France:

Might be an interesting emergency belt?

Pics and Vids / Flatpack charger first impressions

Just a short video about the flatpack charger made by Wijnand:

It has become time to sell my 4 brick watercooled DigiNow. First, I'm still very happy with it but I initially bought it for my commute with the DS2015, which required 1-1,5 charging stops each way depending on the temperature so I wanted maximum performance in charging and cooling.
Now I've had the change to move to walking distance of my job and the water cooling is a bit op for Western-European weather. I do still use the Zero but don't need the insane charging capacity any more and can go by with >10KW with a charger that I can also use for my homebrew electric 2CV.

What do you get:
4 SC units
The brain box that controls it all
All the cabling with an extra long DC side so you can keep it in the top case
Mennekes inlet for L2 stations
The original+upgraded water cooling parts.
If you want to, I can also include the Pelican case on a reinforced top case frame to fit it all in.

Photo's are on the way when I get back home but all the stuff is also mentioned pretty well in the video's on my channel:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLZ9tcCrr_bq2tSdJ_a-0eg

Asking €2500 or €2650 with top case and frame included, located in the Netherlands.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Side bags
« on: February 13, 2018, 03:40:36 AM »
I've looked a bit around for 3th party panniers because the standard Givi ones are a bit meh. Problem are the racks, I can order a decent kit of panniers and fit it to the existing rack, which can be potentially costly.
Then I realised that side bags do exist and are much more universal because you can hang them on the seat. Does somebody have experience with large side bags?

I'm interested in a pannier and top case set from http://www.stahlkoffer.com/ but they need access to a Zero to take measurements for the frame. If there is someone from that area that is willing to drop by that would be very appreciated!
Of course charging costs and roadside lunches etc will be reimbursed.

Parts, Mods And Hacks / Battery heater
« on: December 06, 2017, 04:00:12 PM »
Brians topic about a battery cosy inspired me to see if battery heating would have effect in the winter.

I ordered a 25x35cm heatmat and it does slide in nicely between the pack and the frame. For now it seems to have a bit of effect, even though it's only 15W but I guess the motorcycle cover helps keep the heat in.
I started around 16:00 and the temps were 8/10°C, before I went to bed 9/10°C and the next morning it was 10/11°C.
There is something going on at least, this might be a solution if your Zero lives in an unheated garage

Parts, Mods And Hacks / CCS kits
« on: December 05, 2017, 01:25:51 AM »
So one of the biggest fast charging networks had a sad announcement a few days ago, from now on they will install higher power chargers on new location, although without AC. Business-wise an understandable decision but a bit of a bummer for two wheeled motorists.

Luckily does the SCv2 also accept DC, I'm starting to look into CCS but that is some advanced stuff, reverse engineering it would be almost impossible for me at home. There are some ChaDeMo third party kits but I have yet so see one for CCS.
Ideally it would be an inlet with a black box that talks to the station and had DC out, does somebody know if such a thing exists yet? Searching for it is a bit iffy because the term CCS returns a lot of clutter.

So I'm figuring out how to fit these damn Superchargers so I can finally start touring long distances on my bike.

Water cooling is a bit op in my new situation and I got a set of fans coming in soon, but after a few rides with all the components in my top case the weight balance did feel a bit iffy and weird in corners.

So, panniers might work better? Earlier this year I spoke to the guy behind Stahlkoffer, a company that makes bespoke aluminium cases and racks:

Gave them a call and they can make and mount double bottomed panniers for my DS. Sweet, just make some holes for the fans and cables and you're good to go.

But then I remembered the thread about mounting SC's in the skid pan:

In which Terry mentioned that the pan works as an excellent heatsink and before the chargers reached thermal cutbacks the bike was pretty much filled up.

I think you know where this is going:

Of course the chargers should either face down or the false bottom should be sufficiently thick to absorb enough heat before radiating to the rest of the case and the cables need waterproof connection to the outside world etc.

So, using metal panniers as both mounting and heatsink for 6.6kW of raw charging power on each side, crazy or feasible?

Please comment, since I got this lightbulb moment I can't get it out of my head!

Parts, Mods And Hacks / Adding extra batteries
« on: February 12, 2017, 09:25:00 PM »
I'm not planning to(at least for now ::)) but it has been done in a few occasions, with perhaps the most notable case being Terry Hershner's Streamliner:

IIRC this is a pre-2013 model Zero so things might have changed by now, but I'm curious if you'd be able to upgrade a later bike in a similar way and how it is pulled of in the first place. The wiring etc. might not be the hardest thing but making sure the bms accept the new capacity is maybe harder to figure out.

General Discussion / Forum downtime

I noticed that the forum is having a few problems with downtime lately. Can somebody in the loop explain what's going on?
