Title: Hole storage thingy concept
Post by: Erasmo on February 12, 2016, 02:04:22 AM
It isn't a secret that a lot of people use the frame hole to put their charging cord in, but what if you could use it as a little storage unit?

So time to drink some beer and start some paper modelling.

First take a look at the hole:

Better take some measurements to make it look that I know what I'm doing:

Time to take the carton of the sixpack and start folding(banana for scale):

It does sort of fit:

Due to the narrow bit it needs to be in two parts that you can screw together with thread or something. Added bonus is that it is also secure now. Add some caps to the end an you're good to go.

Time to make a neater model, digitise it and start up the ol' 3D printer.

Your thoughts? :)

I think if you can 3d print one, polish it up... then make a mold and cast a few in polyurethane... it would sell.

Maybe easier to go with something soft (textile), with a zippered end?  A thin flexible insert could give it some shape, so it doesn't slide out when empty.

Hard to think what you could put in there that's worth carrying. Tool kit, maybe. Security cable? Emergency first aid kit? Spare key (who's ever going to even know to look there)?

Looking forward to seeing what you put together.

We'll see about that later, first I have to prototype a decent one.

Or the type of stuff that the tankpouch is made of, sturdy enough to stay in place and cou can put a zipper on it.

Just small everyday things I guess. With the power tank installed I do find that some extra storage on the bike would be welcome.

Thats always the hard part.
The nice thing about polyurathane is you can make it firm but with a little give.. so a 1 piece design can press in, and have a "snap closed" lid.

I already have an idea in my head for a tube with a closed mushroom end on one side, and a pop-off lid on the otherside... I just dont have anything to model it off of.

I'd be more inclined to treat the tube under the seat as a nice anchor for tie-downs. I have an Airhawk seat cushion and would rather run a strap under there than under the seat (because the seat is harder to detach than a normal motorcycle's, and don't want to interfere with the wires and fuse blocks there).

One concern with putting things there is weather/moisture exposure. So, I tend to drop extras in my topcase which is very easy to keep dry.

The rear swingarm tube might be good for a trailer mount, conceptually. Maaaybe the under-seat tube could partly anchor a fairing.

PVC with reducer that screws or glues together in center? I keep my banana in there.

A piece of an old inner tube stretched over pvc ends (cap/screw cap) dyed black of course! Should be weatherproof. Don't want my banana to get wet!

I wonder if a lightweight rain suit or rain pants would fit in that tube?  That could be useful if you get caught during a sudden and unexpected (aren't they all?) rain storm.   ;)  Also, that would be a good location for a tire plugging kit and a small hand pump.

I like the original charging cord storage compartment, with maybe room for a little tool kit?. I assume the cable looks ratty sticking out both sides as it is?

I keep my banana in there.

I guess that's the closest thing to a tail pipe on the Zero.

I shoved a mountain bike mini pump in there with a rag.

The idea is if I get a flat, I can use my plug kit and pump it up with the pump.  That way I don't run out of CO2.

For us Brits, it would be a good place to keep an umbrella. You wouldn't need the storage thingy for that though. I like Richard's rain suit idea. Also like the idea of a puncture repair kit. The only trouble is I've got tubes in my tyres so can't plug.

Spare underwear and some toilet roll for touring? Might come in handy for near misses too. [emoji6]

I swear someone managed to get a J1772 socket in there, or was I just imagining it?

How about toilet seat covers for when you need to visit a "porta potty" or a "Pit toilet" in the woods?   :o

Ideas enough on this forum, that's for sure!

I don't know about mounting a trailer on that part, it would get some significant shocks I think.

Anyway, I did a quick mockup(not scaled correctly) in a 3D model:

So far only a screenshot, I have to wait 24 hours before it can be published at Thingiverse.

The idea is to have two parts which you can snap fit (https://www.google.nl/search?q=snap+fit&safe=off&biw=1152&bih=529&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjLxu_54fTKAhViQZoKHTU3B2kQ_AUIBygB) together. This way it is mounted sturdy but using a screw driver you can uncouple them later if you want.

I just got my 3D printer last week, can't wait for you to publish your link on thingiverse!

An umbrella wrapped in rainpants should fit. No real lateral forces, since we lean into turns.

Aren't there two holes? One in the main frame and one in the swing arm? I think the swing arm one is bigger.

Hold your horses, this is far from production ready, it is nothing more than a rough 3D sketch. But the ability to pan and zoom around it makes the concept more clear.
Here's the link: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1339287 (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1339287)

I'm currently figuring out how to connect the two pieces, first plan was to screw them together but the narrow bit not being round has complicated things.

That is correct but I still prefer a lid on both ends.

Yes the swingarm hole is bigger but due to its location also takes a lot of vibrations and shocks.

"Yes the swingarm hole is bigger but due to its location also takes a lot of vibrations and shocks."

Those conditions shouldn't bother the charging cable, though, right? Maybe two storage thingies, one for the cord and one for things that are more fragile...

instead of two pieces, if you made the walls thin and "soft", you could just fold it slightly to stuff it through. 1 piece.

Yeah it is in the works. Tomorrow I get my bike back so I can take measurements.

Also looking at materials for that. The stuff they make those hard camera bags from is a good candidate atm.

Of course: https://www.thingiverse.com/download:2079957

I stopped working on it because I have a huge peli case on the bike these days, no shortage of storage.
