KTM Electric Forum / Re: Need 2018 FreeRide Information

I think 16k might price them out of doing much business.  Some times companies that do not want to make a certain product raise the price by a lot so they don't sell any. Hopefully KTM can do better with an E-bike. I am somewhat surprised they seem to be struggling so much. Maybe the people making the gas motors have some part in the development of the E-bike and they don't want it to succeed.

Yes they seemed to talk strong about electric yet do not seem to be putting much effort into it. At least they did increase the battery to 3.6KWh or something, but the others are like 5.8 and still struggle with range, so it seems like KTM is still behind.

I do like KTM's method on the Freeride, of being a smaller bike. Since electric has issues with range, maybe the smaller trail orientated bike is better.  Alta went the track route which does make sense to be close to the staging area and a somewhat stable length of ride so you can plan your range. But if the higher speeds and powerful motors needed for the track are difficult for range, maybe a slower trail pace might provide some help to the range problem. The smaller and shorter wheelbase trail bikes are fun and sometimes the full size bike like the Alta is too much for tight offroad. I think KTM does not want the bike to gain weight, so they don't like more batteries. It is a difficult problem right now between weight and range. So many other things about electric are great for the offroad trails though. That CAKE bike is trying to create something between a motorcycle and a bike for offroad, which is a yet a different method. I think KTM is still onto something, but maybe they don't know what to do now.

You don't have to pick up your bike so fast, the carburetor won't be leaking gas.

I would have thought more than 40 miles on trails like that.  Those slow speeds seem like best conditions for range. Also hard to use full throttle there or you will hit a tree or something.  I like single track trails like that.  Alta webpage says 4+ hours for trail riding. So I figure 15mph, thus 60 miles.  Thats same as their city range guess.  When I used to ride a lot, I typically put 32-40 miles of trail and that was enough.

I found various power and torque curves for the alta, with a 250F bike plotted on same graph for comparison.  The ones I found were radically different, so obviously something is wrong, or maybe all of them are wrong. Is there an actual graph from Alta or another reliable source.   I would like to compare to the more trail bikes also, like DRZ400, Klx250.

Someone post something on the 2018 Freeride E.  Like the range they got in single track trails.  Feel free to throw in a helmet cam video as well.

I do prefer a smaller bike though.  MX is pretty much straight line riding with a big sweeping corner at the end of each straight section.  It is much different than single track and woods riding.  A long bike gives stability at speed, so thats ok for the track, but not so good for offroad.  I wish the dual sport Alta was not the same as the MX version. Shorter and lower would be nice.

It's a nice surprise when I check these posts to see if anything is new, and I find a video.  I like watching the videos people post.  Thanks.

I have a question related to pushing resistance.  On a gas bike, there have been times when I kill the engine, leave it in gear to lock up the back tire, then grab the front break and attempt to walk/slide/fall down a hill.  Depending on the hill, sometimes you just cannot ride it.  You cannot go back up either, so you better have another way out.  It's not common, but I have done it as a choice in some cases, or its been forced on me by going down a sand hill that ends in a cliff and it would have been hard to get turned around to go back up.  Is it possible to lock up the rear wheel with having to hold the break lever?  As far as pushing the bike when it runs out of power, I heard of people taking the chain off.  That's a pain but it would provide low rolling resistance.  I imagine there has to be resistance to pushing because it is turning some gears and the motor.  Unless there is a shift type lever for putting into neutral or the one gear.

It seems like KTM does not know what they want to do on the Freeride series.  350 came and went, but never to USA.  I know a lot of people wanted that bike too. Then 250 2-stroke, also to USA, nobody I know wanted that one.  Now 250 4-stroke, but not to USA.  Now the freeride E comes to the USA finally.   Must be a rule you can only have 1 freeride model going to the USA per year. 43mm fork is same size as klx300 or 250.  It seems big enough.  So just because it is not the latest size for the big bikes, doesn’t mean it is insufficient.  I think the ready to race motto is hurting KTM here. If I am honest, do I ride to the capacity that the top level guys can ride the bikes? No I can’t.  So why do I need a suspension that can do all that when it never will.  I know there are limits, like the crf230 I mentioned. The forks are too wimpy for going fast into a corner.  I can exceed the limits of those forks so it handles bad. But I don’t think the freeride forks would be holding me back.  Riding is about fun for me, I don’t care about racing.  Offroad motorcycling is only about race, that’s a stupid concept.  Trail and other casual offroading is legitimate, and many people would pay the high KTM price to get light weight and good components even though they don’t race.

You mention a good compromise on some characteristics.  I have been thinking about that lately.  I considered the different bikes I have ridden.  Then I went to the shop and sat on the KTM350 dual sport and then on the Honda 250 dual sport next to it.  The long wheelbase of the 350 and the terrible seat that dug into the sides of my legs was quite noticeable.  As far as dimensions go, I think the Freeride dimensions are better.  Freeride has much shorter wheelbase 55.8, compared to KTM 350 dual sport 58.3 or Alta's 58.6.  I really did not like the big bike feel of the 350 dual sport.  I started to think about the bikes I have ridden because I was thinking about how the rake and trail effect handling in tight stuff.  But the crf230 does not have as small a rake as other bikes, I was surprised when I looked, yet it has good slow speed turning.  I figure the 54.1 wheelbase must also play a big part.  I looked at the numbers for other bikes, klx250, drz400, kx250f, wr250f.  I concluded I have a more favorable ride experience on the shorter and smaller bikes.  Sure the kx250f is light weight so does work well in trails, but it still doesn't have the trail bike feel.  It has that big bike feel even though it is so light.  I think KTM's free ride bike line is a great size. However, they don't want to sell them in the USA.  The website only has the Freeride E.  I like the e-bikes for sure, but I was thinking gas due to the range and dual sport.  Alta's is dual sport but I know it will have that big bike feel.  They adjusted the rake for their dual sport, so that will help but I doubt it will feel as nimble as the KTM freeride e.  I often overthink things, but in this case I really think I noticed the trend of what size bike I am looking for, and it's not a full size mx bike.

I had not checked out the EX until now.  That's nice.  Seat height is on the tall side for a trail bike though.  The videos show it in the woods riding at the right pace.  Seems like most motorcycle videos are of fast riding in some open desert or jumping like at the X-games or something.  I don't want a motorcycle for that.  Electric would make a good bike for woods riding.

Depends on what you want to use the bike for. I am interested in trails, and no racing at all.  Going from 40 to 50 hp is a negative to me.  Would I rather ride a 450 or a 250 in the trails, definitely a 250.  I am one of those who believes the smaller motor will provide more range. Also less rotating mass to make the bike more agile. Huge difference between a 450 and a 250 even when the weight of the bikes is about the same.  I not sure the difference would be so noticeable with electric though.  Would be interesting to see a review with both bikes in tight woods.  In that straight line motocross event, probably an extra 10 hp would help, but I would never use the bike in that way.  I am more interested in a dedicated trail bike that is a dual sport.  They do list a number for range on trail usage, so at least they haven't completely ignored those people.  But it looks focused on track use, that's a bummer.

Alta Motorcycles / Re: Agressive Pricing on Alta Redshift Models

Its pretty much a standard, the lower the price the more potential buyers.  Maybe the price will come down enough to where I will be thinking to buy one and not just interested in the thing.

From what I read, I would think reliability would be the top item.  I have heard reasons people do not buy a zero is due to reliability issues. Based on the numbers in the spec sheet the bikes look good. They don't want a project bike.
