Energica / Re: FW version 43
« on: March 04, 2024, 11:16:56 PM »
I got V43 on my ‘21 Ribelle about 1 month ago (Feb 8th).
Now I can charge at the Tesla Magic Dock stations (charged at 23 kW in Placerville).
It also now works at the BP Pulse stations (didn’t before).
It also now supports EVgo’s Plug&Charge feature (didn’t before).
It had no effect on the key fob detection (unfortunately).

As someone who enjoys long rides this is a significant improvement.
I have not seen any downside/new bugs as of yet.

So you didn’t opt for the LFCS? How much more would that add to the cost?

Congrats on the new bike! Looking forward to hearing more about your riding/charging experiences  :)

I’m planning to join - sounds like a good ride. See you tomorrow.  :)

I rode last weekend with Carla - she told me she had the PowerTank battery in her SR/S. I think Terry Hershner also has the PowerTank?

The LiveWires on ‘The Long Way Up’ also ended up with dead 12V batteries (at the beginning of their journey). Seems like there should be some other way to restart the bike, other than take it apart and recharge the 12V battery.

Nice review - enjoyed the video!

Tony and I were riding up Hwy 101 last month when a LiveWire passed us. We caught up to check it out - it was the first time I’d seen one up close - a beautiful bike. The rider finally realized that we were also on electric bikes (Energicas) - he then slowed down to check out our bikes before speeding back up and disappearing. Not often you randomly run into another EV bike on the freeway.

Harley LiveWire Forum / Re: A cross country ride on a LiveWire

Would love to do a cross-country trip on my Ribelle - just waiting for retirement 🙄
300-400 miles/day would be no problem - my best so far is 550 miles in one day.

Interesting that they used Zero’s entry-level SR/F, rather than the top-of-the-line (i.e. PowerTank). The range comparisons would be a lot different.
Just the fact that it is possible to add a second battery pack is a huge advantage, IMO.

I, too, would love to see a three-way comparison between the Livewire, SR/F, and an Energica.

I’ve watched all of the four episodes streamed so far. I’m totally disappointed.
Clearly they never talked to ANYONE with any electric motorcycle experience whatsoever. It’s sooo embarrassing.
As a rider of four different electric bikes (so far) it’s clear to me that kWh rating of the battery pack wins the range race every time - except perhaps for the extreme aerodynamic ‘dustbin’ fairings.
The HD-Livewire battery is rated at 15.5 kWh, the Zero DSR, with PowerTank is 18 kWh. (The DSR is the bike that the show casually dismissed as impractical at “70 miles of range” - how about a defamation law-suit Zero?). The Livewire bikes on this TV show are not modified for aerodynamics, that I can see.
As mentioned above - I’m sure that Harley paid $$ and probably also donated the bikes to get the publicity. The only advantage of Harley over the Zero is the CCS charging, but as we see in the first four episodes - they never use this feature - charging only at Level I or Level II charging (and from a diesel generator!)
Why don’t we see an attempt to charge at someone’s house (clothes-drier outlet?) or at an RV campground (30A or 50A)?
If they had hired Terry Hershner, or BenSwing Rich as consultants - this show would have been sooo much better.
At the beginning of ‘Long Way Up’ they mentioned a couple of times that “no one has ever attempted a ride like this before”  - really?
What about Tom Tomczyk? Didn’t he do this ride five years ago?

By the way - I have no bias against Harley - I hope I don’t sound like I do - the Livewire is an awesome bike - I just wish this show had done some fact-checking before starting.

Energica / Re: Picked up my Ribelle today

I started at 95% SOC. I used up exactly 90% of my SOC to go 80 miles at an average speed of 73mph (+/-).

Has your range improved since you got the bike?

When I first got my Ribelle I, too didn't get the best range, but Stefano from Energica said the range should improve after a few cycles of charging/discharging the battery - and sure enough - the range jumped from about 100 miles to 130 miles.

I'm sure the warmer weather is also a contributing factor, but I can routinely ride for 100 miles and still have 20-25% left in the battery.

Energica / Re: The perfect Energica

I got my Ribelle in March - now have over 4,000 miles on it.
The only thing I would change is the seat - after riding a few hundred miles it isn't comfortable - maybe another 1/2 inch of foam padding would do it.
As far as the charging - I've never wished for faster AC charging - I only do the AC charging at home (overnight). When on long rides I just stop at a CCS station.
A center-stand would make it easier to lube the chain, but not sure if the extra weight would be worth the trade-off. In any case it only takes a few minutes to lube the chain - just have to push the bike a bit, add the lube, push it a bit, etc.
The longest ride I've done so far is 550 miles in one day - the bike performed flawlessly.
Of course we'd all love to have an infinite range battery ;-)  ....
but for now the bike is near-perfect, in my opinion.

Do we know if he made it all the way to the tip of South America?
The new TV show, “Long Way Up” claims that they are the first to ride that far on an electric motorcycle - wondering if that’s true?

the better charging system is not a feature all of us can use yet.

Where are you located Crissa?

CCS charging stations are already all across the US (the first picture is from PlugShare with only CCS chargers displayed).
(There are more listed on other charging station apps and websites.)

They just installed another 12 or 15 where I live in Stockton, CA

I think their best looking Energica  is the red Ego. But their most comfy bike is the SS9.

I agree - I used to ride more aggressive sport bikes (Hurricanes and Ninjas) when I was younger, but when I sat on the Ego I had to lean forward much more than the Ribelle or the SS9. Although the Ribelle has a slight forward-leaning stance it seemed much closer to the SS9 than the Ego, to me.

If I were to pick one I would go with the Ribelle as it seems like a good compromise; sportier and nicer looking than the SS9 (but not quite as comfy), but more comfortable than the Ego.

Here is are two pictures one of me sitting on the SS9, the other on the Eva Ribelle - not too much more of a lean on the Ribelle:

The more EV bikes the better - imagine the competition; the increased battery sizes and the improved charging capabilities.

I’ve had two Zeros, so I guess you could say I’m biased (I loved the new SR/F when I test-rode it), but I wanted to keep an open mind. I went to my local Harley dealership three times since they announced their Livewire bikes were ‘available’ and each time I went they ‘didn’t have one yet, try again next month’. So, no experience there.
I was also open to check out Energica since the price is about the same as the new Zero (if you get the extra battery pack to make it 18 kWh the Zero SR/F is over $20K).

With 21.5 kWh and fast-DC (CCS) charging I think Energica has just upped the ante. With their bikes you can charge with 240V at home (oh - and it’s easy to install - I installed our J1772 charger and I’m no electrician).
And then for the longer rides the option to charge quickly is very nice.
