General Discussion / Well, I've gone and done it - total electric EVs
« on: October 26, 2018, 12:03:05 PM »
Well, after 6 years riding electric motorcycles (Zero and C-Evolution) we've decided to go total electric in our transportation and bought our first ever Tesla Model S 100D.

We were initially going for the new Jaguar i-pace, but after trying to buy one for 4 months and after severe incompetence and amateur moves by Jaguar France (I presume just France but maybe also UK), we slammed the door at the dealer in Paris. Following day we went to Tesla Paris and within a hour we were at the same stage as 4 months with Jag. 3 days later, after a 2 hour test drive, we signed the papers. The jag had a delivery of 6 months, if lucky, the Tesla 2-3 weeks.

Having driven both, the comfort level is the same, performance ditto, but the technology of the Tesla will put any other car to shame. Add to that the sheer professional attitude and sales process, plus really friendly and knowledgable staff made it a great move. Plus having the Tesla supercharger network is going to make our tour of Europe next year very simple and easy to do.

The Tesla is a tad more expensive at the base price, but when you add one of many many options to the Jag you get close to the Tesla price. But interestingly enough, the lease price is the same.

Tech Help / Re: c evolution charging issue

Yup, it's the 12V battery. You can charge it using the 12V accessory port in the glove compartment. With no 12V, nothing will happen.

General Discussion / Charging in Spain - How?
« on: September 10, 2018, 12:41:39 AM »
I'm planning a long trip next year from France to Spain and Portugal. In France I use Chargemap card and 2 other network operators, but none of the three work in Spain (nor Portugal).

Any advice and/or comments how to charge in these countries? It looks like a major headache with different operators...

I wouldn't use the throttle to hold your scooter in place on a hill (if that is what you are doing).  That is really tough on the motor as it heats it up and can lead to issues eventually if you do this long enough. Use the brakes to keep it from rolling backward and only use the throttle when taking off on a hill after releasing the brake.

Or flick the sidestand which puts the parking brake on.

« on: June 18, 2018, 09:37:04 PM »
I've been on the DS for a month for a series of articles and the BMW for 4 years (which I bought).

The Zero rides like a real motorcycles, the BMW like a real scooter, so your first choice should be what kind of bike you want.

The quality of the C-Evolution is exceptional for BMW. First of all, it's made in BMW i3 car factory in Berlin, secondly, they really threw all the available technology at it.

On the other side, the Zero has the performance and handling. You ride faster, further and you can corner much better.

So if you're looking for something predominately for in the city, go for the Beemer, if you're going riding the twisties and countryside, go for the Zero.

Actually, it's like driving the Nissan Leaf e-Pedal. You learn to let go of the throttle, bit-by-bit. Indeed, letting go fo the throttle is like hitting a brick wall. And BTW, when you do let go fast, the brake light goes on...

General Discussion / Re: Banner ad at top of page

It's been done many times before with many forums. Members join to pay an annual/monthly low fee, and then a year later either the forum disappears or goes back to ads. New members looking for a discussion platform flee sites that ask for donations.

Putting in ad blockers is also not the solution; it kills many good sites. It's funny that people don't object to ads in magazines that they pay a subscription for, but turn red when they see ads on the internet on sites that are free.

Mostly the German manufacturers, with some others thrown in, will roll out 400 fast chargers within Europe. It's nothing in numbers, but it's a start.

Beg to differ...

Piaggio sell a whole range of MP3  http://www.piaggiousa.com/
BMW sell their 650 cc scoots http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/us/en/fascination/worldoverview/urban_mobility/main.html
Suzuki sell their Burgman http://www.suzukicycles.com/Product%20Lines/Scooters.aspx
even the Honda Silverwing (but not the updated model) http://powersports.honda.com/2013/silver-wing-abs.aspx

It's just they are not sold in the numbers they are sold in Europe, where there are more scoots (mostly because of business folks using them to bypass traffic).

Sure, mopeds are mopeds and don't require a special license. I don't think we're talking about those. Silverwings, MP3, any scooter over 125cc usually requires a motorcycle license, and IMHO should be seen as a motorcycle.

We're now getting to the point that some scoots and more like "normal" bikes. Take the latest Honda Adv-Scoot.... it's a traditional scoot (ie no gear changing, etc) but looks a lot like a bike.

It has always pissed me off the way "motorcycles" are seen different from scooters. Technically and legally, they are all motorcycles. That's like saying a cruiser is not a motorcycle. Or a enduro is not one.

I'd say almost anywhere in the world, you use the same license to ride either. Riding a scooter puts you in the same risks as other bikes.

But still, many see scooters are not-motorcycles and beneath them.

Pity

Moshe, Motorcycle Consumer News tested the Zero SR in their September 2014 issue. While the suspension and brakes have been improved since then, the basic level of performance has stayed pretty much the same (maybe a 10% increase).  If you haven't read that review yet, you might want to check it out. I think you will find that Zero's range predictions for the government's city EV cycle is pretty accurate.  In any case, if there is a Zero dealer near you, they usually have at least one demonstrator that you could likely borrow for a day of testing.  Also, I am sure that MCN has connections with Zero as they have tested three of their models in the past.  It is likely that they could work out some sort of 2017 loaner for you to test, supplied by a local dealer.  But if you want to test a 2018 model, that may be a little more difficult as I don't think the new bikes are being shipped out to dealers yet.

A few years back when I was still writing motorcycle stuff, Zero France loaned me a brand new Zero DS for a month. I contacted their PR agency, and 2 weeks later the bike was in my garage.

I read those kind of things and it reminds me of the TV series "Silicon Valley"...
