Yes when we talk about safety it is important to realize that a punctured scuba tank has the potential blast effect of 2 hand grenades. Yep given the choice I will take my chances with electricity. If you don't believe me just look up videos of truck tire failures, and those are only at ~80psi. Now try a metal or composite tank at 4000+psi.

The fundamental problem I have with air is the huge losses you get in both charging a tank and also in converting back to mechanical leverage. If you take 10kwh of energy from the wall you get something like 9kwh+ into a motorcycle battery. On a zero that can take you 100+ miles depending on speed. A typical scuba tank will take 30 min to fill from a compressor using something like 2.2kwh of electricity to store at most 400wh of recoverable energy in the tank. That is approaching ICE engine efficiency levels.  400wh of potential energy will only take you so far even at 100% drive train efficiency. This is where the most basic rules of physics come into play.

Problem with air is it has a horrible energy density. A regular scuba tank carries something like 300-400wh (if released very slowly) with horrible recharging efficiency. They will pretty much stay in the novelty category for the simple physics involved.

I rode the '13 FX when it first came out at the headquarters and I fell in love. What a great bike that is just going to get better. If and when I have extra cash laying around I'll be grabbing one to play on.

If they stuck a zero powertrain into a CRF250 chassis it would probably do great if it was cheap enough.  Modern MX bikes take massive amounts of abuse which the X chassis was never able to cope with.
That reminds me, has anyone heard of these guys?!
http://www.evdrive.com/company/who-we-are/

They do exactly what you mention, but as usual the offering is not "cheap"
The more I look at it, the price is the factor that is holding this industry back from widespread acceptance.

I have ridden the development bike. It ROCKS! These guys are pros and the CTO is one of the nicest people I have ever meet in the EV world. Very professional and if I had the funds I would purchase one in a heart beat.

I don't think those cells will like the draw that bike can do.

What protomech said is very close. Yes it is heavy compared to say a Zero or Brammo but is very competitive in weight to similar type bikes from Honda/Harley/Victory ect, plus we are almost guaranteed to be much quicker then the gas bikes. We have already done a ~4.11 0-60 run with it compared to ~6 seconds for a similar gas bike.

If your in the Vegas area stop by and check it out for yourself.

I have not played with the Zero's enough to know what this is but my gut (that I have learned to listen to) is telling me this might have something to do with the DC/DC converter. While I'm a big fan of them I still feel better having a 12v house battery  in the loop. Look forward to hearing what the solution is.

I have ridden the Mission R and I can tell you it sure does not feel heavy. It is fast and turns wonderfully. While not the same as your S1000rr (458# wet I believe) not many bikes really are. (Big fan of that bike myself) The other part about that bike is if your riding on the street and don't care about trying to go 150mph drop the gearing down and from any speed the front end is a flick of the wrist from pointing to the north star (I did't try this since I didn't have the money to buy the bike if I dropped it).

Spires,

The MX is still on the Zero website. Contact Zero directly.

If Zero has access to a dyno, it must be at an off-site shop.  I sure didn't see a dyno during my tour of their factory last year.  The last time my bike was at the factory for the glitch No. 1 repair insertion it was ridden about 200 miles before being returned to me.  I think most of Zero's testing is done on an asphalt-covered road and not on a rolling-road.

They have an in house dyno. When I stopped by to check out the 2013 bikes and got a tour with Mike Corbin we saw a little red XU on the dyno.
