I'm guessing that the bike key isn't turned to on when the Charge Tank doesn't work? Early Charge Tanks required this to close the contactor. Plugging in the onboard charger is another way to close the contactor.

I'd be wary of using a charger unless we're talking about removing the 12V battery from the bike. I daily use the ZeroNG app, which @SandyGnomes notes is now called ZeNGo, to monitor the 12V and main batteries, especially during cold weather. It's important to regularly check the readings, and the "Actual date" of the data, so you catch if the cellular connection if broken and the data has gone stale. You want to see that the charge levels regularly change. My bike now sits outside for a month or two between rides so I use the app readings as a prompt for when to key on or charge the bike.

Anyone have any ideas or experience where water intrusion is most likely to occur, that would cause errors like that...

When I had this problem, after several days of intense rain, water had leaked through my "water-proof" cover and soaked the middle of the bike. I found water in my charger port and in the 12V battery cover. My 12V battery had to be removed and revived before I could get fault codes. I read that the drain for the charger port allows water to run down the wiring below the port. Since this was during the COVID pandemic, after talking to a mechanic I choose to let the bike sit an my house rather than at the shop. After several days of warm weather, the isolation faults cleared. After a few days of riding, the trouble light stayed off. To hopefully prevent this from happening again, I drilled a drain hole in the battery cover and now put a plastic bag over the storage and charge port areas in addition to a new "water-proof" cover.

I had commuted with this bike in the rain several times soon after I got it, and often commuted with my previous SR in the rain. I liked to think that this much use kept the interior warm and resistant to water penetration. It's certain that I didn't have a problem until the SR/S sat for weeks and then was soaked in a bad storm.

Instead of changing the headlights, would adding auxiliary lights to the forks work?

Cornering ABS is a nice-to-have addition, completely unannounced too so far as I can tell as not a single one of the rags or youtubers I follow has mentioned it.

Cornering ABS was already mentioned by Zero’s CEO Sam Paschel in March 2019, see link below. I've always thought it to be part of the SR/F package from the beginning. What am I missing here? On the other hand, in my 19'000 km I never got the "chance" to use it, or wasn't aware it just saved my bones :).

I also thought it was part of the original SR/F and /S Bosch package. My 2020 SR/S feels glued to the road in bumpy corners in a way my 2016 SR never did. Or maybe the suspension settings are better suited for my ride now.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: SRS firmware update 18
« on: October 17, 2020, 02:23:55 AM »
I didn't experience any issue regarding SoC/range behavior with release 18.

Another thing I'm not sure is new: in the app using the starcom api (not connected to the bike in bluetooth), the SoC reports correct value when the bike is charging or turned on. Then after 2 or 3 hours, it drops to 0% until the bike is powered on again.

This is annoying. I really liked being able to double-check the SOC from inside.

I think on my SR you pulled on the mirror while spinning it to tighten the ball joint.

I've nearly done this with an SR and with my SR/S. It's concerned me enough that I pull the bike back from the handlebar as soon as I'm off, even if slightly uphill.

The 2014 S that I owned and gave my daughter never needed to be "commissioned" and is still running fine. What Zero really should do is to "recommission" their OB chargers.   ::)

I heard about this guy who had a 2016 SR and only took it in for service to change the tires because he was too busy riding it all the time and didn't have a tire installer at home. But if someone does have the opportunity, they should support their local dealer as much as they can.

(Note that my closest dealer is out of range, and I don't have a trailer to get it there. So the standard suggestion to "take it to a dealer and have it checked out" is very difficult to accomplish..)

Almost any general automotive mechanic, regardless if they specialize in motorcycles, automobiles, or trucks, should be able to give you a hand with a brake problem.

I hope they get to your bike soon. Have you had scheduled maintenance done? If the dealer says the bike has been sitting waiting for Zero, tell them you want to pull it for the original problem and now you want (to pay for) scheduled maintenance. That will include the motor alignment. If they go for it, you might get lucky. If so, definitely ride around the dealer to see if you can make the problem come back, before you go home. Zero wants to diagnosis the problem. You just want to be riding.

The bike won't remain charging all night. The charge rate will taper as SOC goes over about 90% until the charger shuts down and the contactor opens.

I'm walking this back. In 2016, when my bike remained plugged in whenever it was home, before firmware updates, before new guidance from Zero, and before I installed DigiNow chargers, I recall being surprised that my contactor seemingly closed again about 24 hours after the bike had finished charging to 100%.

13
cell balancing on Zero bikes is enacted when the battery is over 114 volts.

What is that? Something between 80 and 90%?

Thanks all for the information, makes sense.

About keeping it plugged at 100% long enough, initially my question was about replacing the overnight use of the onboard charger by a wall plug to j1772 adapter to avoid using the onboard charger, so yeah it would still sit at 100% in my garage at will, no problem about that !

The bike won't remain charging all night. The charge rate will taper as SOC goes over about 90% until the charger shuts down and the contactor opens. I don't think I saw if you responded to how off is your cell balance. If it's low, you can continue with your current practice. I've read conflicting information about how the BMS handles cell balancing. If it only did it in the taper, my cells would never have been actively balanced since I tried to avoid entering that final regime. Yet, my cells typically stayed within 5mV of each other. One might be led to think that the BMS has been set up to balance the cells whenever warranted while the contactor is closed.

Do you know if the new Zero SR/S has been reported to have similar issues?

Yes, the SR/S is susceptible to isolation faults. I think someone else started a thread about this, and I've responded about it. I now cover the tank and charge port area with a plastic bag under my not so "water-proof" cover  whenever there's a chance of rain or dew. I also drilled small holes in the 12V battery cover to prevent water from pooling there again.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do when it rains on a work day. My bike was fine riding in heavy rain the first couple of weeks after purchase. It faulted a few weeks into the COVID lockdown after an extremely heavy storm. I now check the 12V battery daily with the ZeroNG app to have some confidence that the bike is functional.
