Over the course of about 2 months, a degraded area of the instrument panel LCD has spread to the area shown in the photo. Has anyone else had this degradation occur, and, if so, does this continue or appear to reach some stable state that leaves the display still usable? The quote for replacement is about 300$, and if I can avoid that so much the better.

Last week I noted that on switching from low beam to high beam, there was a brief period of neither. After a few days, this had ended up being neither high or low beam being on (though the low power lamp, I think this is termed the running light, remains on), with the high beam indicator remaining illuminated on the instrument panel. Other electrical lamps, horn, continue to perform. Note that the factory headlamp bulb was replaced about 2 years ago with the same halogen bulb part as part of preventive maintenance so I have no reason to suspect the bulb itself.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue, and, if so, found that replacing the multifunction switch restored normal headlamp function?

My 2014S (and others) have required a replacement on board charger. Mine was replaced under warranty at about 25k miles, so you presumably have some distance to go, but you might want to include that as a consideration. The replacement has continued to work for several years and at least the 30k miles (and charging) since.

At about 45k miles my 2014S had battery issues that required a replacement. That too was under warranty. That is quite a bit into the distant future, and you're already carefully considering the state of the battery, but something to bear in mind.

Apart from those issues, my 2014S has been reliable (garaged, and maintained at moderate state of charge). Best of luck.

Just a minor FYI to those who might still be riding a 2014S (or similar): a couple of parts that with wear might go airborne. In January, the tank bag's woven retaining loop and velcro had worn and, when not weighted, went aloft as I accelerated for a freeway merge. In March, the rear half of the original, 2 piece front fender detached while driving at 40 mph and was shortly thereafter crushed by subsequent traffic before I could retrieve it. There is a replacement single piece fender available through Zero, but with fading of the main panels that new fender is a cosmetic mismatch, que sera sera.

If anyone has other parts that were unanticipated wear items, please let me know so I can keep an eye on them!

I was fortunate in that my 2014S required a replacement battery, but that happened just prior to the end of the 5 year warranty. As such, this was covered by the factory. This outcome was in part owing to the purchase having been as new, but after the bike having been on the dealer floor quite a while. If you have access to the original purchase date, you might see if by any stroke of luck this was within 5 years of now.

While I didn't have to pay for the replacement, the dealer who performed that replacement noted a price similar to what you were quoted. Had I needed to pay out of pocket, I likely would have at least limped along with the decreasing range until my 20 mile one way commute was not possible.

Howdy, the price of the component (the pair of heated grips) was 83.51 USD before sales tax.

In case you have a 2014S, and wanted to add the original accessory heated grips, Zero still has some. I contacted Zero for a recommended brand for that year & model, and the rep was surprised to find they actually had some still on the shelf. My local dealer ordered Part # 10-06443 from Zero, and my fingers are now warm for the winter months.

My 2014 S 11.4 kW-hr original battery made it to ~45k miles at which point it was exhibiting the various ills reported by others. After confirmation of battery degradation by testing at a dealer, Zero replaced the battery under warranty. The replacement 14.4 kW-hr battery has only about 5k miles at this point, no issues observed (though the battery replacement process had some initial issues). My commuting use sees 40 miles per day, discharging to as low as 65% then L1 recharging at work to 100%. In effect, the battery is garaged for most hours of a day at 83% to 84%, with fairly brief excursions to 100% and <70%. Temperature conditions are mild, being garaged in the SF bay area, and use is effectively year round so no long term storage considerations.

Overall, I definitely had planned my purchase based on a longer operating life for the battery, but Zero did make it good with a replacement under warranty so at this point I'm fairly confident that I'll attain the cost-effectiveness that I planned on.

As there was a question regarding battery longevity, I ride a 2014S that I purchased new in 2015, and, as the 5 year warranty (and 45k miles) was coming up, the battery began to have increasingly strange behavior, and noticeable loss of range wrt new. My guess was there was a bad cell, but I didn't attempt to diagnose this further, as Zero was good enough to replace the battery under warranty after confirming the impairment. As the original (2014) battery was no longer produced or available, a present day (2020) battery was installed (a net upgrade in capacity). This change in battery details apparently was a bit complicated, given the various interactions I had with the service department, and required several consultations between the service department and Zero (plus a few extra trips back to the service department, over a couple of months) to get everything working perfectly.

For my primary use case of commuting ~40 miles round trip per day, I would have kept operating the original battery for as long as possible barring a catastrophic failure, but I am content to have a battery without many years and miles so that I can do longer distance errands in addition to commuting. I have no notion of what the cost for installation (battery + shop time) would have been, but almost certainly more than I would have willingly parted with!

If you are still within the battery warranty period (perhaps given it is a 2015) it may be worth paying for a service visit to assess the battery condition prior to expiration of the warranty, particularly if you have any reasons to suspect it has been degrading.

A reverse 'gear' would be helpful to back uphill into my garage. Did the promised center stand option materialize as yet?

My 2014S is a bit over 44k miles (purchased new). The maintenance to date is tires, brakes --- and the on-board charger that failed at about 24k miles. That on-board charger has been reported failing (or degrading) by others as well. The QuiQ external charger was key to being able to limp along until a replacement of the on-board charger, so you may wish to consider purchasing the external charger. As other responses have noted, there is risk so YMMV. Despite the on-board charger failure, my experience overall with my 2014S has been positive.

For earlier model years, such as my 2014S, there was a slow (over months) monotonic trend downward in maximum charging level owing to a degrading on-board charger. As you describe your observations to date of <100% charging displayed being sporadic, on-board charger degradation isn't consistent with your observations, but if that pattern were to develop you might bear that possibility in mind.

As an unanticipated experiment, I happened to fully charge (at 120V) my 2014S on March 14, long enough for cell balancing to complete. As those living in the Bay Area know well, 3/14 was just prior to the shelter in place orders. As a result, my 2014S has also been sheltering in place (garaged) at moderate temperature.

After 4 weeks, I thought I would check the self-discharge during that interval. After keying on briefly, I read the dash at 98%. This rate may not apply to other cases insofar as the batteries have had (until the most recent month) a substantial usage, with nearly 43 thousand miles on the odometer. As noted above, the temperatures have been typically (of a Bay Area spring) mild, and, while the garage is uncontrolled, the temperature swings are modest as personally sampled on the occasions I've had to rummage in the garage's storage.

Fingers crossed I won't have an opportunity to check the self-discharge rate for 8 weeks of shelter in place storage.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Insurance premiums
« on: January 23, 2020, 07:29:43 AM »
For my 2014S, my notice for 2020 premiums (Geico) was nearly a 2x increase over 2019 --- with no obvious cause (no tickets, no accidents, albeit I'm a year older). I phoned a rep, who attributed the increase to changes in CA law that affected liability. When I asked which laws (so that I could send letters to my CA assembly member and senator), the only specific one the rep could offer was the law pertaining to texting while driving --- which seemed a bit of a reach to apply to motorcycles.

The note above regarding a minimum policy cost is something I found to be true at Geico, and I used the web quotes to test combinations of insurance types and deductibles to just get past that minimum level. For 2020, that Geico minimum appears to have jumped to >~$105 per 12 months, up from 2019's $75 though I might not have sampled the minimum set.
