Buy Sell Trade / Re: Wanted: Zero electronics
« on: May 29, 2023, 07:21:13 AM »
I'm in NY, less than 100 miles north of NYC

I have a 2014 Zero SR that is fully bricked after getting caught in a rainstorm this year. It has about 13kmi on it.

Doesn't power up, doesn't light up.  This is after the headlight stayed on for almost a week on its own with the key switched off.

It also has a custom Corbin saddle that should fit on any 2013-style Zero frame motorcycle as far as I know.

I think it'd be a great parts bike for a 2013+ Zero S, SR, or RS.

I'd like $2k for it, pickup from its home address, but be aware there are no guarantees and it does not function, no lights, fully bricked.  It may just be a fuse, it may be the contactor malfunctioning, it may be a harness, it may be a whole board shot, who knows?

I'll throw in the external 96 (brown anderson) charger I have with the whole thing, as well as the original saddle from Zero.

Any takers?

CT personal property tax.  It's easy to catch the big ticket items that have to be registered with the state, like a car or a motorcycle.

IIRC they have airplanes to spot things like new swimming pools, too.

If you're willing to live with 3.3kW, get a Duosida EVSE off of eBay for $140 and a Quick220 device for a 20A circuit.

https://www.quick220.com/-A220-20D.html

Then find two outlets in your garage and/or kitchen that are not GFCI and are on breakers that are opposing phase.  Usually done by trial and error.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Any DC charge options for Zero?
« on: March 24, 2019, 03:33:46 PM »

I think H-D's plan is for their LiveWire customers to go from H-D dealership to H-D dealership, looking for a DC charging station.   ::)

Assuming there's a dealership every... 50 miles apart or whatever the highway range ends up being on that thing *IF* it actually comes out.

Don't forget that "electrify america" teamed up with Wal-Mart to install non-propriotory  dc chargers at over 600 Wal-Mart's by end of 2019. There are already 2 within 50 miles from me, and 3 within 100 miles.

All of the press releases I was able to find indicate it would be 100 walmarts by EOY2019.  Perhaps 6 charger units per walmart?

Yes, there should be a new section as it's a completely different bike, and probably the start of a new series.

This, it's a new frame, it has a separate and distinct style from the existing 2013-2019 series of S/DS bikes.

On the door, there may/should be a breaker panel diagram sheet.
That has images which will tell if half-height 15a breakers can be used, but if possible, they're usually the bottom switches in the panel.

I am not an electrician, but I believe in balance.  That is the basis of my suggestion below:

I'd guess the way to go would be to take the two dishwasher 15s and combine them into two half-height 15s to free up that bottom right breaker, you now have a void large enough for a 240v breaker, perhaps move the oven/range breaker over to that slot, and then put a 60a breaker in on the left side where the oven/range breaker was.  I see that you have a 200a service breaker, so you should be reasonably safe.

Ask an electrician, and also ask them if there are any known issues with the make of your panel and breakers, some vendors have had fire safety issues in the past and been sued out of business. (tin-foil hat speaking)

The J1772 connector is designed for many more insertion/removal actions than the plugs you describe, also there would be less risk of arcing because the contacts are recessed and the J1772 protocol forces a delay in establishing contact on the circuit.

I agree that the world would be a better place if an L6-30R or L14-30R was available everywhere I'd ever want to park, but I don't think they were made to be durable enough for plug/unplug actions many times per day without arcing.

Also, the J1772 connector has built-in provision for locking, it's possible to loop a luggage lock through the button to prevent its removal by unauthorized parties.

I want to get a good price on a 2014 Zero SR-compatible Power Tank, and fairing as well.

Dynomutt: The Amazon example was more to the fact they were unknown and doing something that hadn't been done before.  Old style financial analysis kept harping on the fact there was no profit from selling books online but they missed the bigger picture from what it could be.
I agree using their components for other uses could be a nice money maker.  Plus the new faster charging SRF platform could really make fleet sales an unbeatable option for cops or small delivery uses (500lbs carry).  Why they haven't made a work/play quad yet is beyond me.

But as for what a company can do when they cut their operating and overhead costs.  Cutting Tesla stores in this case.  Here is an article about Tesla dropping their high end prices by closing Tesla stores and of course other cost savings in production of batteries and manufacturing.

https://www.engadget.com/2019/03/01/tesla-model-s-x-price-cuts/?yptr=yahoo

Tesla is different from Zero in that Tesla from the beginning had no desire to play ball with the existing power structure (dealership) and instead did all they could to disrupt and subvert.  I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but it looks like Tesla has run out of piss and vinegar on that.  Zero OTOH is playing ball with the existing structure to try to build a network.  Apples and oranges.

More attention to smoothing out laminar flow, Fairing with storage.

No one really knows too much about how things are going outside of the company because its private.
If you look at Amazon and how many years it took to turn a profit because they were reinvesting in the company and now they are doing pretty good.

Even Tesla may not make it on their own for say 15 more years we'll see.
Zero has three big issues in my opinion that are fixable.
1.  Lack of public knowledge.  Most people I talk to have never even heard of them.  The press that HD gets may help get the word out as the media makes comparisons.

2.  The lack of tech/maintenance support to customers and dealers in a timely manner and dropping under preforming parts and suppliers sooner (chargers).  It takes money to fund an expanded support staff and the quickest way to do it without a big loan is move the company out of CA.  Leave the HQ offices and RD there if they believe that is the only place they can find EEs with the knowledge for their products.

3.  Sales price.  The main factory/tech support center should come to the east coast, southeast coast to get really cheap, and get the operating costs down to fund bigger productions and parts buys.  They would be closer to Europe which has a much bigger thirst for electric powered vehicles with better charging infrastructure and super high gas prices.  A 365 support staff from the savings and a middle timezone operation for both west coast and Europe.

Keep in mind that the bulk of Amazon's profit isn't even coming from a division that existed when it first started, and was created as an offshoot of their own internal re-engineering to share their exposure to the costs of operating physical servers in a data center. (AWS)  From that basis, they were able to build unique products, and an entire industry was born.

I think Zero will find profit from things like their high-density battery monolith and motor being used in other vendors' compact EVs.  That's somewhat the "Lightning" model, but there's more to Zero than their own existing product line.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: permanently bypassing onboard charger
« on: February 21, 2019, 11:25:17 AM »
I'm pretty sure there's a resistor on the communication line on that Anderson connector instructing the contactor to close, on the QUIQ charger that Zero sold anyway.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a very common mechanical failure.

At around ever 12k miles, the wheel bearings to be popped out and replaced as this appears to be their lifetime.

Maybe it's not a defect.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: problem with throttle
« on: January 18, 2019, 04:57:32 AM »
Those standard throttles are very fragile, I've broken one trying to slide on a new grip.

It's possible that the plastic inside the throttle deformed and the spring got free.  It's not an easy fix.

I'd suggest replacing it completely with a Domino throttle.  I did, they seem more robust.

https://www.electricmotorsport.com/domino-twist-grip-throttle-with-microswitch.html

The unofficial repair manual describes this as well.
