Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Fair Price for a 2016 S 9.8
« on: September 24, 2017, 06:34:37 AM »
Hard to say. Generally, sellers of Zeros I've noticed want more than buyers are willing to pay. If yours is still under warranty, you can demand higher price. But be prepared for low-ballers. It also depends on whether there are incentives on new bikes in your state. When I was looking to buy a '15 S or SR, there was $1k incentive from Zero (a cash card), Marylabd had $125 per kilowatt battery capacity, and there was a Federal tax credit. With all that, I could buy a brand new S for less than what many folks were trying to sell used. So I used that to negotiate on price and bought an almost new used '15 SR with a 12.5kw battery for the cost of a new S with a smaller 9.5kw battery. Folks in some other states did not have state incentives, so were willing to spend more on a used bike than I was.

Sorry, can't give you a high-confidence number, but I think you will be lucky to get $8k for yours. Check cycletrader asking prices as a guide, thoigh I think they are generally too high for the used bikes. As with all electric vehicles, they tend to depreciate quickly, but Zero I think have been holding their value better than say a Nissan Leaf ...

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Charging in Japan
« on: September 20, 2017, 05:25:49 PM »
I am glad Zero will take care of it. The charger worked when I put it on the shipping truck to LA.

I am really curious what components fail on these chargers, is it some IC or something simpler like a capacitor or resistor or an internal fuse ...

That's what I suggested they try as well. I don't even know if the charger "stopped working" after having worked a few times for him in Japan or never worked at all. All I know is that it worked the last time I charged it in the US before I shipped in May, and now does not... Hope they did not fully discharge the battery flat to damage it... My emails bounced overnight, so not sure if he got it ... Communication has been a bit challenging and slow due to time difference and I think a bit of a language barrier...

Maybe next time I manage to get in touch I'll direct them to this thread here for troubleshooting directly with the forum members...

Yes, he bought my SR earlier this year and now he received it in Japan and the charger is not working, I just got an email from his translator about it. I was trying to help them troubleshoot it. So, if 100V is OK, maybe the charger indeed died or some fuse or something else is broken ...

Does anyone know if the Zero 2015 built-in charger can operate at 100V, the standard in Japan per Google? The manual says 120V - 220V

Thanks!

The hex screw is visible from the side of the handlebars. It is not metric, grab your SAE hex keys. I think there were photos on the links above in the unofficial owners manual, in the section for adjusting the front brake lever.

I know what you are describing - when I loosened my pin too far away from the master cylinder, it too resulted in very late brake engagement (after regen) and a very squishy brake lever that I could fully squeeze all the way to the throttle. Not good. So I tightened things-up a bit on that pin and got to a nice balance where regen would easily engage before the brake, but the brake would feel normal and not squishy. If yours does, then you should bleed it or look for worn brake pads or other issues.

Sorry, I sold my bike so can't take a photo for you. Look here and there is also another link there for adjusting the screw.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Limp mode at 25%
« on: May 22, 2017, 08:06:54 PM »
Lowe power at really low SoC is *not* a bad thing, it protects the battery. So I think in this case, unless the newer firmware is overly aggressive, it would be a good thing to restrict power. But not limp at 25%, that's too aggressive, IMO ...

Check your logs in the parcer. My bike was dropping to 26% output, when it had 60+ percent free. Showed my voltage dropping to 90-92v when I still had 30-60% SOC. It started doing that after a December/January firmware update to stop it from randomly turning off while riding. Roll the dice and see what the next firmware update brings! If I'm stable now, I'm NEVER updating my firmware again.

And that is why I don't mess with my 2014's original firmware.  I don't have any of these problems, not even a large drop in top speed at 8% SOC. (At least I know it will do 45 mph at 8%. I wasn't willing to try to go any faster being more concerned about getting home than top speed testing with a depleted battery pack.)

Sounds like one more "typical" about a month-long service ... For likely parts to break like belts and bar ends, my dealer stocks them precisely to avoid such long delays. But they can't afford (I guess) to stock much more than that, so it takes weeks to get them from Zero.

Glad you sorted it!

The stock charger gets quite warm. I try to always have a desk fan pointed at the bottom of the bike while charging. Drastically reduces the temperature. That of course works only in my garage ...

The charger heats-up the battery near it, which I don't think is good for the battery either. The fan prevents this too.

Look for loose or missing fasteners and new scratches :( (was my experience when I picked-up my bike after a month in the shop, luckily the core of the repair worked and has been trouble-free thereafter).

Actually, I don't know for sure. I think Pikes Peak. Just speculating based on who appears to have bought it on eBay and the little research I did to see if that's for real or someone is scamming me. Looks legit though. I'll ask and if they don't mind me sharing, I will.

« on: April 24, 2017, 06:35:57 PM »
Folks, it's been a great year or so with my SR. If I ever again buy a bike, it will more than likely be electric. The Zero has been tons of fun. Time for a change though - seems like 4 wheels will serve me better, so my '15 SR will soon be off to its new owner.

The exciting part (at least for me) is who got it. Once the sale is final (and provided this is not some elaborate scam or prank), I'll share more. I think there is a chance we might see it in a certain very famous race coming in June  :)

3.2V cell voltahe is very low for 65% SoC. Seems either a cell that is weak or the BMS thinks it is, so it is limiting the current to only 199A, which is way too low ...

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Current Limiting while Riding
« on: April 21, 2017, 11:53:26 PM »
On my '15 SR I do experience decreased performance at lower SoC, but I don't think as dramatic. I avoid riding it below 40% due to the decreased performance and also it is not great to discharge it too much if possible. But I've ridden it a few times in the teens and once or twice down to 0%. Near 0% SoC the bike indeed limps pretty slow. But at 15% my recollection is that I was going considerably faster than the 25mph you mention. In fact, I think I was doing decent highway speeds at under 10% SoC trying to reach my office and charge there - I must have been doing at least 60mph I think. On that day I did over 80 miles of mostly highway riding on a single charge, much of it around 70mph and I barely made it home limping at the end with charge in the single digits and eventually down to 0%. But it was warm weather - maybe the bike throttles down even further in cooler weather?

In this particular case, the differences are very specific. Aside from the warranty, one has to decide for themselves if the new sturdier belt, more heat-resistant motor, and very slightly bigger battery are enough. For some that is enough, for others it will not be enough to offset the cost difference. From the postings here I tend to see similar kinds of issues on the '16 and '17 as we saw on the '15 (and that's not unexpected - they are very similar.

Or buy a trusted used '15 for a lot less (ahem, I got mine for sale listed here and on eBay) ;)

If this were a ICE I wouldn't hesitate buying a two year old motorcycle. But it's my opinion with something as electronic as a Zero, the latest model would be the best bet. The dealerships can't/don't deal much on these bikes either.
