General Discussion / Re: UK electric motorcycle sales

Not sure about the UK but here (in California) the disposal cost is paid up front as a line-item fee when you buy the tire. That's not really a tax, more of an effective cost internalization, but I can see how the more conspiracy-curious among road users would still take it as an opportunity to politicize.

Tires vary in price greatly, and also disproportionately to wear, quite often.  Our BMW had crazy expensive tires, but gave maybe 18k miles at best.  Our Smart car has the cheapest damn tires and they look like they will go 60k.  There's also the matter of replacing them if they get damaged, and now you're double-taxed.  Oh, and the Smart, being low-mile, got new tires before being worn out because they were simply old.  In my area, old tires do not do well because of heat.  So again, double taxed for no miles.

So a tire tax is also progressive by nature? What's not to like?

Lightning / Re: I ordered a Lightning.

Lightning has said, "We will make it right".  Today a giant truck showed up at my door and it's being shipped back to Lighting for them to review the cell pack and repair the battery structure.  Then they will test it and ship it back.

Was it a HaulBikes truck, and did they make the delivery on Monday? When I took delivery of my new Energica the driver was telling me he'd just dropped off a Lightning in Hollister.

Small world, hope you're reunited with your Strike again soon.

Appreciate the rainy photo! I was separately curious how the lights would handle the extra abuse of being unsprung mass; it's nice to hear that they're solid.

I started with some lights with clamp mounts on the upper shock tubes, but there is not a lot of vertical room to clamp stuff between the fender and the fairing lower edge when the suspension is fully compressed.  If I mounted the lights low enough to clear the fairing, the inside edges of the clamp mounts would come in contact with the fender on heavy breaking.

Probably not too big a deal for accessory lights, but the fork legs also aren't really designed to be clamped outside of the areas that are designed to mate with the triples. Last I checked Denali's product photos all showed their clamps mounted flush with the bottom of the bikes' lower triples.

Completely agree the stock Energica headlights suck. I have the Denali D2 light pods on my Ribelle and KTM SA 1290. They work well and have never had any issues with them. https://twistedthrottle.com/shop/lighting/auxiliary-lights/driving-lights/denali-d2-2-0-led-light-pod-with-datadim-technology-2/

Do you have any photos of the Denali lights on your Ribelle? I've been considering adding some selective yellow for visibility on the commute.

I really appreciate you chronicling your experience over time. Based on the lack of updates in the past year and a half I assume the new design did indeed fix the failures?

California bicycle riders always seem to be very upset when they are in front of you and you toot your horn to let them know you are behind them and want to pass - especially when they are riding in a group and weaving all over the road.

This is why I installed a bicycle bell!

The spandex-clad contingent will start trying to pull away from the e-bike behind them only to find they're staking their pride against a very different kind of e-bike.
