Not seeing this $200 solution... first link doesn't work, the aliexpress link starts at ~$500 but doesn't look weather resistant.

The 'garlic' is the key, that sounds more like a capacitor failure, they have a funny scent to some people.

AliExpress is not difficult to navigate. Request a 116V, Anderson connector, there are a number of suppliers. Alternatively TCCharger 2000W = $250-300. 100,000+ in use. IP67. Ask yourself why Zero is using an IP64/IP65 charger with no seals, no external fuses, no water resistance on the rear plugs.

Thanks Don, though that's $300 before programming.  And the warrantee is a little lacking... How is that more reliable that Zero's?

And IP67 is good enough for inside a bike, but... Iffy in weather.

Thanks Richard230 for the post and photos.  I just replaced the charger on my 2017 SR at 7k miles! $900 arg!  Mine was making nasty noises, smelling bad, then popped the 20 amp breaker in my garage.

Has anyone looked into starting a complaint with the NHTSA?

If the failure rate is really that high I would think they would look into it.

When it comes to the Zero OBC, I think they are trying to squeeze too much blood out of that sealed, no-fan, turnip. It looks to me like they have two or three separate chargers crammed into that case that cycle on and off (based upon looking at the alternating charging current in the Zero app) in an attempt to make it put out 13 amps for hours at a time. When you do that, things start to get hot, which will impact the life of the electronic components in one way or another. While I will use the OBC when away from home, when charging at home I now use Zero's Delta Q charger, which doesn't produce as much power and still gets pretty hot as you find out when you touch its cooling fins.

The OBC is more efficient when 240 VAC is used. That means less unwanted heat.


I normally use 240 VAC with my year 2017 Zeros and so far, both of the OBCs have been fine since new in year 2017.

As of the last model year refresh, that charger is no longer being used on any bike. So there's that.
