Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Speedo calibration help..
« on: March 10, 2015, 01:28:09 AM »
Heya peeps.. I have a 2011ds with a 61t rear chain and a new 15t front along with the standard wheels (with dirt tires on them). Not exactly sure how the calculation goes for this setup. Anyone enlighten me? :)

My fear is the bikes are just going to get heavier.. I doubt anything with the motors as they just switched to these regen friendly types.. Battery? Unlikely.. New model maybe? possible, I've been bugging them for years about making a stripped down DS version that is light, fast and dirt oriented.. My 2011 I bought strictly to strip down and use in the dirt worked out really well.. IT just lacks about 10-15 miles of range as it tops out at 30miles.. The newer ZF6 would do it and keep the bike weight the same as mine.. THe ZF9 would be about 300lbs stripped down.. Just too heavy for hard dirt riding.

So thoughts on 2013 bikes and if I should wait... I want a bike now haha..

I inquired about a new bike and they simply referred me to a dealer that's over an hour away.. I've already bought 2 bikes from them direct since back in 2009 and now they brush me off to a far off dealer?! I have to drive an hour and a half to talk to some used car salesman like guy and pay huge taxes on a bike now? They told me they wont deal to me personally.. Also when asked if I should wait until 2013 to see if those new models would be worth waiting for instead of a 2012 model, they simply say that they cannot speak about it.. No hints, not a single shred of info? Dude.. ANYTHING would have been nice! I have personally put more than 20k into Zero motorcycles and they treat me like a nuisance. So Now I have to drive too far to deal with someone else? No thanks, I don't like being brushed off. No info about 2013 over the 2012 model? Well I was wanting a bike soon with better range so I'm leaning on a MUCH cheaper KTM that I can get locally and not have to drive so damn far away. Zero's bikes are cool but they are getting heavier and very expensive, they wont deal with me and they don't help me out with small info on upcoming bikes.

Buy Sell Trade / Anyone interested in a 2011 zero X/MX battery?
« on: March 27, 2012, 08:41:40 PM »
This battery is pretty much new and has the adapter to plug into a 2009/2010 zero x or mx.. Flip me a message if interested.. I have not put it on ebay yet..

I have a 2011 Zero DS that is fully geared and lightened up for the dirt, and a 2009 Zero X with a new 2011 battery that just sits there collecting dust... I see no reason to keep it as the DS gives me a solid 30miles of muddy dirty fun! I thought about keeping the bike and selling the new battery for a couple grand, then shipping would be far easier.. I also use the Zero X's charger for double charging.. Anyone here have any thoughts?

Work in progress.. Much lighter than stock..

Close to 50lbs lighter, diff rear fender, geared much more appropriate for gnarly hill climbing still retaining a top speed of 54mph.. KNobbie tires and various odds and ends.. Still more work to be done, but very fun, no gas, no oil, no filters, no warming up, no noise, no stalling, no clutch.. Still even climbing hills and mountain sides up and down constantly I get a good solid reliable 30 miles of fun in the sun dirt biking.. Plenty for me!

I started by removing all the lights and brackets.. I also removed the charger.. If the ds is 297, I'll have to weigh the parts and subtract them.. I am going to try to lighten this bike up big time..

So now new tires for the dirt.. I normally would get Maxxis but I think I will research the lightest tires I can get and put those on.. Anything with knobbies at this point would be fine, I mean this bike isnt a KTM or CRF but it should do just fine for trail riding. I'll go narrow and light so if anyone has any good info on which brand may provide the lightest tires I'd be interested.. All I could initially find was project bikes that were all about lowering the weight and they ended up using Dunlop.. So maybe I will go that route.
I am also making some adjustments on being able to quickly add the lights and charger back on the bike.. I already pretty much made it so I can put the charger back in in only a few minutes. It was pretty easy. I will grab some photos later. I really dont want to get the charger muddy anyways, it is an expensive part.
The front light bracket is pretty much assembled with all the lights on one piece, so I have a good idea on how to make it a quick install item..

First thing I do when I get it is begin converting it to a straight up dirt bike.. This is the bike they need for straight up dirt riding.. Hopefully can lighten it up a good 25lbs or so..

I bought one of the original 2009 ZeroX's back about 6 months before they let them out. I even got a call from Neil Saiki when I was waiting for it while enduring the delays. Anyways, so I've had this bike for a few years now and have only really had a problem or two with it, but each and every time Zero flips me new parts or in this case sends me a battery return box to repair my battery. In short my battery sat for the whole winter in the house on the charger in the spare room. It was warm, dry and always topped off.. I finally dig it out to play in the new year's sun and I have like only a 10mile range. Runs great just seems half the pack is missing... And this is one of the metal faced batteries. My original one had some wiring issue present in some early models so they shipped me this metal face one and took that one back. I mean years after I get this bike they are still standing by the customer! I've gotten brake replacements, control box swaps, charger swaps, some motor cooling plates.. Yadda yadda yadda.. Impressive really! I have a lot of people watching the progress of me with this bike and so far they cant blast me for diving into something so new and unknown. So hats off to Zero for looking after the customer! I am really hoping they end up flipping me one of the newer batteries with the extra cells in it... Plz plz plz if any Zero people are reading this..  I'll take a newer one if you guys have any spares kicking around haha..

Ok, I think I worked out a way for me to get a Zero DS, I currently have an 09 zero X. FUll throttle riding on the road gets me about 14miles, probably double that with trail riding along a lot of hills. How is the DS in this area? Also about the rear tire on the DS, is it the same size as the front? Can a front tire be used on the back for improved trail riding? I would be using it mostly for the trails. One more thing, about the front sprocket, is it the same simple 14-18 tooth machine gear used on the Zero X and MX?

Thanks in advance..

Heya, I watch the forums for any goodies that may pop up but so far kinda quiet. I'm interested in any mods people have done. Only real mod I've done is carved out a notch on the bottom plate under the motor so I could use a large front sprocket with the small rear sprocket to get just over 50mph. I was toying with the idea of moding the battery cage only slightly so I could slide another battery in. I was thinking with one battery half out the left side and other battery half out the right side if you had a long run to do. When one battery ran out, you could stop, swap around the batteries or the cable to use the 2nd one. I've measured around the bike a bit sure they would stick out a bit on each side, but not obtrusively. You wouldn't want to race of course, but a nice long run would be cool. What you guys think?
