Title: No more front brake screeching
Post by: Richard230 on January 08, 2020, 08:41:38 PM
Finally, I have a solution to my 2018 S front brake screeching. Ever since my stock front brake pads bedded in they would make a loud screeching noise during the last 10 feet when coming to a complete stop.  :-[ Removing the pads, cleaning them thoroughly and applying an automotive anti-squeal brake compound to the back of the pads would solve the problem for about a hundred miles of suburban travel and then the noise would return again.  ???

So I finally broke down and replaced the stock pads with a set of EBC #FA209/2HH pads.  I have now used the pads for the past 500 miles and they have remained completely silent and (in addition) braking is improved over the original front brake pads.  :) So if you are experiencing braking noise, I can recommend these pads as being a inexpensive and worthwhile solution to the problem.  Personally, I think J.Jaun should use these pads in their calipers and ditch whomever makes their current brake pads.

I think your prior pads were just faulty. :P

Nope. AFAIK, perhaps most of the heavier older (perhaps not the SR/F) Zero S & SR's  all do it, since new. My DS has no trace of this problem. But my SR with power tank has it very bad, and exactly as Richard explained. The automotive anti-squeal stuff works perfectly for around 100 miles or so and then comes back almost as loud as ever.

Richard, thanks for the info.  I will soon change my SR pads to a set of  EBC #FA209/2HH pads. I will post here what happens. And re-post 500 miles later.

With these new pads, did you still spray the stuff on the back?

I just ordered mine on Amazon.:

Order Summary
Item(s) Subtotal:
$34.73
Shipping & Handling:
$0.00
Total before tax:
$34.73
Estimated tax to be collected:
$2.87
Grand Total:
$37.60

If I also find mine to work quietly after 500 miles, this info. should then be added to the unofficial Zero Manual . Perhaps working well on one bike is just a fluke, but on two bikes I think could be a great indication of it being a fix for most, if not all.

The front brakes on my SR/F squeal every time I stop too. I need to look into replacement pads.

I've been using those pads for ~45k miles with similar results...welcome to the quiet side :)

The front brakes on my SR/F squeal every time I stop too. I need to look into replacement pads.

I noticed the soul-destroying banshee squeal went away completely in the winter and came back in summer, with both OEM pads and EBC FA181. From there I figured out that humidity and moisture silence the noise.

I posted my solution a while ago, which is to pour water over the rotors and caliper before parking overnight. That gets rid of the squeal for about a week in the hot summer. I suspect the mechanism is rotor oxidation.

I did not coat my new pads with anti-squeal goop before installing them.

Sounds great. I will do the same and see what happens.

Will these quoted pads fit an SR/F?

The SR/F has different front brakes, so no.

Can someone with a SR/F measure the distance betwixt the front caliper mounting bolts? Should be either 100mm or108mm. Once verified I may be able to figure out which pads fit the SR/F.

The manual for the SR/F shows the part number SBS-SI-80GG in an image for the brake pads, while Googling that number does come up with some pads the sites say they fit 125 Aprillias so that might not be right unless the calipers use two pads per side.

Here's the manual in case you want to look through it yourself: http://media.zeromotorcycles.com/resources/owners-manuals/2020/2020-Zero-Owners-Manual-SRF.pdf

I was just about to take my bike (2018 SR) to a local shop and ask if they could do anything about the squeeling. So your post came just in time; thanks! I've ordered a pair of the pads from Amazon.

Those can't be right. Only 1 retaining pin, the SR/F has got 2.

That's what got me thinking perhaps it used two separate pads, one for each piston, but looking at it closer that's not the case.

Looking on the Jjuan website there's only one caliper it could be (unless Zero had a custom one made) and the pads they show for that look like the ones shown for the rear brake in the manual (pads are the same whether it's a 100mm or 108m caliper). The manual gave the part number as SBS-SI-24HH but I couldn't find anything from that, the Jjuan website says SBS-SI-104HH but I couldn't find those for sale either. Alternatives are SBS-RS1HH, SBS-SI-DS1, SBS-SI-DC10, and AFT SB261-AY which may be of use.

Here's the Jjuan page: https://jjuan.es/producto/die-cast-2p-radial-caliper-left-hand-108mm-interaxis-piston-sizes-3430mm/

I changed my front brake pads to the EBC and I am back from a 25 mile ride. What a nice difference! Not only no squeal, but I notice better smoother braking.

If I try hard enough, I can hear a very faint squeal at some speeds, but I would never notice it if I were not  trying to make it happen and then try to hear it. It's really the perfect fix. Zero should know about this simple fix.

BTW, what made you decide to try EBC  brake pads?

Thanks for the info! I will report back here after I put many hundreds more miles on the bike.

For me, I tried the EBC brake pads because the original ones screeched so loudly that I was embarrassed to brake to a stop and anti-squeal spray just wasn't working. So new pads seemed to be the answer. I have used the EBC brand for years on my ICE motorcycles and my Zero dealer had them in stock.   :)

Ditto here: no more squeeling! And it could be my imagination, but I think the braking just "feels" better, all around.

I have less than 100 miles and already have the sequel back with the new EBC #FA209/2HH pads. However, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. But now I am tempted to try the anti-squeal stuff on rear of the EBC pads and see what happens.

But one more thing, the last ride where I heard the squeal at every stop, it was very lightly raining. Perhaps them being a little wet had something to do with it.

It could be a while before I can check into it better as I came back to Reno today and my SR is in Auburn.

Don, be sure to clean your brake disc with soapy water and flush lightly.  Your disc or brake pads may have picked up some debris and that is what is causing your squeal.  When I changed my pads I thoroughly cleaned my disc with alcohol and cleaned the caliper with brake parts cleaner spray.  If you remove your pads to coat them with anti-squeal goop, you can do what I did and then also lightly sand and clean your brake pads on a piece of flat glass to remove any particles stuck to them.  That should put an end to your squealing.  My pads are still nice and quiet.   :)

Now I have another 600  or so miles on my SR, and I will say the EBC #FA209/2HH front  brake pads (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006BVJZ6W?tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1)  are the perfect fix.  No more noise at all from the brakes. And I didn't do anything other than change the pads to the FA209/2HH. No anti-squeak stuff used.

The only time I heard any noise from them at all was the day it was lightly raining, and that was NBD.

Thanks again for the fix.

Somebody needs to tell Zero about these brake pads. That's what they should be using on all their bikes.

;D  It does make you wonder as squealing brake pads are not a new thing for Zero.  You would have thought that they would have addressed that matter after the first year of noisy brakes.  ???
