Title: 2012's and 12 Volt Accessories
Post by: craigq on February 16, 2012, 07:55:45 AM
Has anyone with a 2012 checked to see if there's an easy way to tap into the 12 volt system for running accessories (i.e. heated grips are nice, uses under 50W typically) ?

I have searched in the 2012 owners manual and there does not appear to be a 12V accessory tap on the bike.  It sure would be nice to have a way to power a pair of electric gloves. If there is a concern about range, the power draw could be limited by the on-board computer. My BMW F650GS limits power from the accessory port to 5 amps. Any more and it pulls the plug - which can be kind of irritating at times.  It would have been better if they had just installed a larger alternator on that model.   ::)

Richard230:

The Zeros probably use the Delta-Q charger with dc-dc converter. Here's the spec sheet:
http://www.delta-q.com/products/QuiQ-dci.shtml (http://www.delta-q.com/products/QuiQ-dci.shtml)

The charger output and signal IO pigtails should be on the left side of the charger clumped together (far side from the 120V AC charging plug), the 12V DC output should be a short distance away if present.

DC output is ~13.5V DC 30A continuous. I don't know what load the lights / electronics draw, but I would suspect it'd be well under 10A. Should be plenty to install an accessory plug and run a GPS / heated gloves / etc.

If you do have to open the bike up to access the 12V tap, do your research and make very sure the battery is disconnected. Contacting Zero directly would be wise.

There is a 12v DC plug waiting for your accessories on these bikes. Talk to your dealer or Zero to get more info.

I am looking forward to the 2012 Zero accessory catalog being published.  You won't find me taking anything electrical apart.  I wouldn't get it back together again.   :-[
