Home Brew / Sacrificing 2013 Zero S 12.5 KWH for golfcart converrsion.
« on: September 17, 2023, 08:28:00 AM »
Does anyone here have experience with golf carts?

If I can't get a decent price for my 2013 Zero S, I want to put in drivetrain parts to a golfcart to make it really fly.  Most golfcarts are 25-35 MPH, but with the zero motor, controller, and battery I can only imagine how it could fly down the road.

Yes, I know the other systems would need significant upgrades as well if I wanted that kind of performance.  Suspension, brakes...etc.

But is it reasonably feasible?

I was taking a weekend ride on my 2013 Zero S and stopped for groceries, when I got back to the zero, it wouldn't start up.

Luckily I was just under 2 miles away from home, so I walked it home.

I got home, plugged it in (it should have been about 45% battery).  Nothing happened.
I checked the BMS LEDs, nothing on any of them.
I popped out the glass fuse from the top of the bms, waited ~30 seconds, then put it back in - no difference.

Any tips on how to further troubleshoot?

Ever since my last firmware update I haven't been able to save the regen/torque/top speed setting in the custom mapping.

I've just been using sport mode 100% of the time now, but I want to return to 100% torque, 100% speed, 100% regen.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Sharing this info for anybody else who might need it.  Maybe someone can update the wiki with it.

I bought my motorcycle with the gearing changed; and wanted to return it to stock.  After I got the belts figured out, the speedo was off.

Here is the procedure to change it.

1) Turn on motorcycle.
2) Press and hold the Select + Adjust buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds.
3) Use the "adjust" button to increment the digit, and the "select" button to navigate to the next digit.

The stock setting is 1972 28-132 2P.
The previous setting was 1972 25-128 2P.

Mine is currently 1972 25-132 2P because I don't want to dig out the 25T motor sprocket.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Aftermarket shock - work in progress
« on: February 14, 2018, 11:19:14 PM »
After my rear shock https://zeromanual.com/index.php/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Rear_Shock failed on my 2013 S, and I couldn't find a reasonable replacement; I went to the internet!
It took me 4 shocks to find 2 that almost fit, and I'm still looking for a good 5th final one.

Substitutions
2013-2014S - The Yamaha R3 has the same length rear shock, but the spring is too wide; it doesn't fit.
2013-2014S - Fastace Rear Shock BDA-51AR/58-AR has a weaker spring, and is rotated 90 degrees; it doesn't fit.
2013-2014S - Wotefusi 260mm Central Air Shock Absorber Universal Fit - fits when mounted upside down. Need to cut/grind down the bushing.
2013-2014S - TDPRO 260mm 10.2 Almost fits; the area on top of the spring is just slightly too large. I had a welder make a mounting bracket, but now the rear of the motorcycle sits up higher.  See the attached pictures.

Next thing to perfect the rear suspension -
Option A: put a lowering bracket on it to get it closer to stock.
Option B: Find a shock that's ~ 1 inch shorter (~9.2 inches) with similar spring characteristics.  A lot of what I see in that range is either 1200lbs or 400lbs when a 500lb-960lb would probably be optimal.

When I accelerate hard (apply more torque), my belt skips.  I checked the tension, and see its 30kg (the top end of the spec).
I have the higher top speed gearing, and bigger spool.  Could this be why I'm hearing this?

Should I loosen the belt a bit, or do you think its something else?

Solar panels have just reached a 5 year return on investment in my area, so I'm planning on getting them installed.  One thing that I'm looking at as part of the design process is if I should spend the extra couple thousand $$$ on an off grid inverter.

The Tesla Powerwall is 13.5 kWh, my zero battery is 12.5kWh.  Has anybody tried, or is knowledgeable about the theory of using the zero battery as an emergency house battery tied in to solar?  Twice in the past 4 years I've been without power for more than 7 days; so I'm not worried about battery degradation for such sporadic use.

I'm guessing I would use the accessory charge port underneath, but don't know if it can be discharged through there as well.

I'm researching the sunnyboy inverters now https://www.sma.de/en/products/battery-inverters/sunny-island-44m-60h-80h.html

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Server power supply for quick charging?
« on: August 24, 2017, 08:06:51 PM »
I have a 2013S with a 2015 battery, and I was looking for specifications on the inputs ranges for the accessory charger.  I can find a used 7.5KW power supply for ~ $100.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/nexus-7000-series-switches/Data_Sheet_C78-437761.html

They are a bit too big to cart around with me, but I want to hook one up permanently at home to my NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Is this a feasible idea, or am I off my rocker?

Do people know the input specs for the accessory charging port?
The only thing I've found is the 100Amp fuse (DC or AC?).

It looks like the zero quickcharger is 96 volts.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 2013 S Frame Sliders
« on: May 11, 2017, 07:59:15 PM »
Has anybody installed frame sliders?  Maybe they're is a generic out there that mounts to the rectangular tubes.

http://www.accessoryinternational.com/product/rg-frame-slider-aero-style-honda-msx125-13.html

This one says it's for the DS, but it looks like it should fit the S.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Watts per mile
« on: December 07, 2016, 09:58:32 PM »
What are you guys seeing in watts per mile?

I'm at 161 watts per mile on my 2013s.
I'm about 200 lbs with gear.
I have the high speed spool/belt, low torque.
Typically ride on county roads about 60mph.
<5% travel with passenger
~20% travel with givi luggage top box.

I'm changing the spool to stock, and wonder if that will decrease my efficiency/range measurably.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Tire change - Valve stem size - dynabeads
« on: December 04, 2016, 12:37:25 AM »
So it's time for me to do the most common maintenance on my 2013 s.  New tires.  I'm swapping out my Pirelli sport demons for avons.  They only lasted 4000 miles.

I've got a leak (think it's my valve stems).  Im looking up replacing them, but I'm not sure about the right size.  Anybody know what it is?

Also, since I'm swapping them out, is there anything else people have liked?  90 bend, or low tire pressure indicator?

Ok, 1 more thing on tires.  DynaBeads for balancing.  I bought dyna beads before, lost them, I read I can use plastic airsoft BBS.  Anybody have tips or tricks?  Why not metal BBs?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Looking for mirror bolts
« on: October 10, 2016, 11:08:07 PM »
I broke 2 mirror bolts while wiggling out of preventive hurricane storage last week.

The zero dealer says they only have the full mirror assembly for $20/each +s&h +tax.

Does anybody have an idea where I can get them (seen it on a different motorcycle), or if there is a standard searchable name?  Like 10mm eye bolt?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Tire scalloping
« on: September 23, 2016, 02:59:46 AM »
I was recently the only electric motorcycle at the local National Drive Electric Week event.

One of the other EV drivers there asked to take my 2013 Zero S for a spin.

Afterwards he mentioned that there was scalloping on my front tire.  (A funny kind of uneven wear)

My tire pressure is good, and I recently adjust the suspension.

I have the Pirelli Sport Demons.

They also seem a bit more worn than I would expect for a light motorcycle.  I used to get 8kmiles from a rear tire and 12k from a front on my Yamaha FZ6.

Im only at 3k miles and both tires look like they will need to be replaced in ~1500 miles.

1) Anybody have input on scalloping?
2) What tires are you running?
3) What kind of range are you getting on the tires?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Calculate HP after gear swap.
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:39:23 PM »
My 2013 Zero S has the 98T/25T gearing instead of 132T/28T stock.

This gives it a higher top speed, but less acceleration.

The specs say the rear wheel torque drops from 321 ft-lbs to 267ft-lbs, but I cant figure out how HP is affected.

I know how to calculate rear wheel torque by the gear ratio and engine torque, but not HP.

Help?

Stock HP is 54hp @4300RPM.  I assume thats motor, not rear wheel.
