Touring California warning
« on: March 11, 2017, 05:02:12 AM »

My newspaper reported that 61 miles of Highway 1 along the central California coast is closed due to a bridge having collapsed. It is expected to be over a year before the bridge can be replaced. This really sucks for any motorcycle rider planning to tour the "golden" state. Check out the attached map.

That blows.  When I was in the service I was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey, CA, and we used to ride down to Big Sur almost every weekend.  Great ride -- one of the best in the US.

Touring California warning

Yep. Now I'm very glad I got one run in on the PCH / highway 1 on my DSR with Supercharger before this happened!

FWIW I rode almost 120 mikes on a charge into a headwind and then there was cold fog as the sun set, so it was a pretty disciplined ride.

I made it from LA to my place in Oakland before midnight.

Also: the PCH is as great on a Zero as I imagined; had ridden it on a V-Strom three times in a decade now and the DSR was very fun to use on it.

I plan to do it again as soon as possible with more drag reduction and possibly a Power Tank if enough time has passed.

On my bucket list is a Motorcycle trip where some crossing needs to be completed on a zip-line.

Another big slide just occurred along Highway 1, north of the town of Goleta.  This looks like a worse problem than the bridge that failed further north. Anyone living between Goleta and Big Sur is really screwed.  Check out this photo:

Last night the TV news showed a map that had the slide located a few miles north of Goleta. (Apparently that was fake news.) My newspaper today showed the location of the slide a few miles south of Goleta, thereby apparently cutting off the town, what with with the bridge out some 45 miles north. The article also said that the Post Ranch Inn, located in the area that is cut off from traffic, is selling helicopter rides between Monterey and the resort. A two to four day stay goes for between $4,300 and $13,500, which of course, includes the helicopter ride and hopefully a Continental breakfast.  ::)

Is that really Fake news to you?  I consider there to be a difference between a mistake and a deliberate deception.

I was just trying to be funny with the "fake news" comment.  Here is the latest Highway 1 closure map.  No wonder everyone is so confused.  ??? The closure location depends upon which slide you are talking about.  Those people who live and work along Highway 1 are thoroughly screwed this summer.  :o
