Harley LiveWire Forum / It Never Seems to Get Better for Harley-Davidson
« on: February 03, 2023, 02:45:58 PM »
From MSN: https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/motorcycles/it-never-seems-to-get-better-for-harley-davidson/ar-AA173bRL?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=abc4eb78467c4deead68e02418744c9c

The bad news is that LiveWire, Harley’s electric motorcycle division which it actually spun into a new company to go public by SPAC last year, is doing bad. Harley, for one, says it expects LiveWire to lose up to $125 million this year. Harley also said that LiveWire sold just 69 motorcycles in the fourth-quarter of 2022, a number that I initially thought was a typo. It says for 2023 it hopes to have up to 2,000 electric units.

General Discussion / Gas is the new toilet paper in North Carolina!
« on: May 12, 2021, 03:57:08 AM »
So the impact of the cyber attack on the gas pipeline is being felt at the gas pump. With everyone rushing to fill up their gas tank many gas stations are now out of gas. Those that do have gas have long lines and in some cases have police directing traffic into and out of the stations. What a mess! It is a good time to be riding electric and avoiding the stress of trying to find gas. There is plenty of power coming out of the outlet in my garage so my Ribelle will be charged in the morning.

Energica / Want to know how fast you are REALLY going?
« on: May 04, 2021, 06:51:42 AM »
On Saturday with a long straight four lane road, a GPS and cruise control I decided to make sense of the speedometer on my Ribelle. Bottom line is it reads 10% high.

So:
10 mph shown is 9 mph actual
20 mph shown is 18 mph actual
30 mph shown is 27 mph actual
40 mph shown is 36 mph actual
50 mph shown is 45 mph actual
60 mph shown is 54 mph actual
70 mph shown is 63 mph actual
80 mph shown is 72 mph actual
90 mph shown is 81 mph actual
100 mph shown is 90 mph actual
110 mph shown is 99 mph actual
120 mph shown is 109 mph actual
125 mph shown is 112.5 mph actual

I find my self generally just looking at my GPS instead of my speedometer but at least its easy to do the math if you don't have a GPS.

Energica / If you have Key Less Start Avoid this Firmware
« on: April 24, 2021, 06:16:49 AM »
A few weeks ago I got my Ribelle updated with Firmware EN.A.002041.039   Version BDY: 6.0.1  Version DSB: 232

The problems this firmware causes is you will see Key Not in Range Error messages when you are on the bike and the remote is in your pocket. Unlike other error messages that go away after a few seconds this error message covers your dash until you press the mode switch. For a few days this happened 6-8 times over my 60 mile  commute. After about four days it stopped for a week. Then it came back for 3-4 days then went away, only to come back again.

But this firmware also causes hard starting. It is common to take 2-3 attempts to get the bike turned on. Has taken four tries a few times. I always carry my physical key in case the remote doesn't work to get the bike turned on but so far haven't needed to use it.

If there is any benefit to installing this firmware it isn't obvious at all and the downsides I am seeing don't make it worth it. Best to wait for the next firmware and hope these problems are addressed.

For those of you with the 21.5 kWh battery how fast are you charging on 110 volts? My Ribelle charges at 1kw/6A. Actual wattage based on a load meter is 750 watts. A rider I know with an Esse charges at 1kw/12A. His actual wattage is 1250-1400 watts. The Esse can fully charge in about 13 hours, my Ribelle takes over 25 hours. What is everyone else seeing out there?

Harley LiveWire Forum / Live Wire going away?
« on: December 23, 2020, 03:12:17 PM »
From the Front Page: https://advrider.com/which-harley-davidson-models-will-return-in-2021/

"Lastly, there’s one very significant motorcycle that did not make the 2022 model list. Which bike is it? It’s the Harley-Davidson Livewire. It’s accessory pages only show the bike available for 2020 and 2021."

Also: https://www.motorcycle.com/mini-features/which-harley-davidson-models-are-getting-axed.html
"There is one more *ahem* current model that did not get included on the 2022 list: the LiveWire. According to Harley-Davidson’s accessories page, the LiveWire is only listed for the model years 2020 and 2021. Some observers think Harley-Davidson should drop the electric LiveWire, and the parts and accessories page suggest that might happen."

Energica / The 2021 Energica's
« on: November 11, 2020, 03:30:49 PM »
So Energica has introduced their 2021 models. Seems the biggest difference across the board is the introduction of a RS model that has faster acceleration. The Ego, Ribelle and EsseEsse9 all have RS models that will be available next February. No mention of cost. The RS model gives you a different power delivery map, smaller front sprocket, different chain, and .2 seconds faster 0-60 time.

Energica / Charging the 2020 Eva Ribelle
« on: September 19, 2020, 03:33:44 PM »
Last Saturday I picked up my 2020 Energica Eva Ribelle nine months exactly after putting a deposit down on it. I arrived home 72 miles later with 24% SOC remaining. With a much bigger battery I was curious about charge times and how long it would take to get back on the road. I plugged into 110 and the bike showed 9hrs, 59 minutes. Didn’t have time for that! So I plugged into 220 and it showed 4 hr 10 minutes. Still too slow! So then I plugged my portable CCS charger which allows the bike to charge at 6kw (from 220 volt outlet) and it showed 1hr, 21 minutes to 80% SOC. So I was able to get another ride in last Saturday, arriving back home after 110 miles and 5% SOC remaining. Plugged into 110 and again it showed 9 hrs, 59 minutes to fully charge. Not sure what is going on with the max charge times at 110 volts. But the Ribelle adds about 4% SOC per hour while charging on 110 so a full charge may take 24 hours or more. No longer can you just plug in a depleted battery and expect to fully charge overnight. The Ribelle with its 21.5 kWh battery can take an entire day to fully charge if 110 is all you have available. I think we have reached the point where potential Ribelle owners need to think about installing a 220 volt outlet to allow L2 charging at home. Subsequent rides showed a charging time on L2 from 2% SOC to 100% SOC to be 5 hrs, 26 minutes. Great for overnight but this will seriously suck if you are on a road trip. Last night I went for a ride and made it home with 4% SOC and decided to try the portable CCS charging to test 6kW charging times. Initially it showed 1hr 58 minutes to 80%. The charging time to 99% was 2 hrs 32 minutes. After 99% SOC the charge rate drops considerably as the battery is balancing and I stopped watching the time.

To fully charge the battery expect charging times as follows:
L1 (1kw): 24 hours+
L2 (3kw): 5:30hrs
6kW charging through CCS port: 2:30hrs.
I have not tried charging from a DCFC yet to see what charge times are like through CCS. I am getting the 600 mile service done today and will use a DCFC after that so will post charge times later.

General Discussion / Why Greenlots is turning off their DCFC systems.
« on: December 29, 2019, 06:21:57 PM »
I live in North Carolina and over the past few months I noticed that many of the Greenlots DCFC systems were being turned off and being removed from Plugshare. Several  of these are in areas where there are no other DCFC options. So last night I was on Plugshare and noticed the icon for the Wadesboro DCFC was back on the web site and here is the message that was posted:

Brightfield-operated Signet fast chargers across NC are currently not operational. These older stations' communication systems run on 3G, which is phasing out nationally. Greenlots, the stations' network service provider, has decided to disable communications at all Signet chargers instead of upgrading the stations to 4G. As a result, Brightfield cannot communicate with, process payments at or operate the stations. WE ARE WORKING ON A SOLUTION. Brightfield is partnering with QwikCharge out of Atlanta, GA, to take over the operation and maintenance of the Signet chargers. QwikCharge is a premier EV charger service and maintenance company. They will upgrade the stations and provide the long-term service required. We expect to finalize our transaction with QuickCharge in January and have these stations back up and running by February. We at Brightfield are EV drivers too. We know the importance of these chargers and are frustrated by this situation. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I noticed there are several Greenlots systems in Richmond, VA that have been turned off and removed from Plugshare so this explains what is going on with those. I am sure there are Greenlots DCFC in other areas that are effected by this decision not to upgrade and simply turn off the DCFC system. On one hand you have to wonder why an EV charging company would simply turn off DCFC systems instead of upgrading the communication system in them. But Greenlots is owned by Shell and perhaps Shell thinks that fewer EV charging options is better for their core business.
