TESLA powered ZERO 2012 ZF18
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:39:29 PM »

Recently i made some calculations and reallized that it would be possible to fit 3 of the TESLA battery modules inside the Zero frame to get 16.9kWh in 18s  (75V)

By mounting 3 of them vertically in sandwich, these would fit nicely and woulf require a light modification to the "gas" tank height

The TESLA modules are:

length 27”/685mm
total width with mounting fins 11 13/16”/300mm
height 3”/75mm

Tis would give 250Ah at 66VDC witch is  twice a ZF9 battery. at 5C burst these battery modules are also capable to give 1250A peak amp and 620A continuous with cooling or about 20kW continous without cooling.

These modules can be found for about 1300$ each ( about 4200$) total.

This would make the highest energy Zero ever.

Aren't those fluid cooled?

Yes they can and are made for.. however they dont require to be colled if the power is lower.

The average power of a Zero can be between 5 to 10kW and this 16kWh battery wold probably give around 2h of continous run so that would be a 0.5C discharge witch would not make the cells to heat in an excessive way and cooling might not be nessesary. However it wold be easy to install and connect tubing and radiator and pump for those who run 140km/h continuous in hot desert

Ok. I've saw some Tesla power pack dismantles on YouTube and it is mighty fine engineering...

Now that I'm thinking of it, if someone is crazy enough to do a battery trailer to extend their range these might be excellent for that, already rigid and stack them 3-4 high and you got yourself some nice amount of extra capacity in a good form factor for a trailer.

This implies a modification in the arrangement of the cells, as the nominal voltage is around 23volts right?

For reference (I think):
http://www.evwest.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=463

These are 55lbs each, adding up to 165lbs, which is a lot for a 2012 frame.

Reminds me of this video on youtube.

Guy added Tesla batteries (modified and made his own battery pack with the cells) to a 2011 Zero S.  Pretty interesting.

"66.6V and the max voltage is 75.6V."
"for the 2012 says Nominal 65.7V and Maximum 74.7V"

3 Tesla modules in serie  are correct for the voltage.
