14 SR Uncommanded acceleration
« on: February 18, 2020, 09:23:32 AM »

14 SR, ~45k miles, mode = Eco both days (2/15 and 2/16)

Hoping for Suggestions / Corrective action for the below?

Uncommanded acceleration

The past 2 days, the bike began to lurch, surged, and even several WOT’s.
The unexpected WOT’s were quite exciting.
I was just cruising, no spirited riding at all.
What’s strange, the first symptoms only occur after the first 30 minutes of riding have passed. Then the unexpected events get progressively worse at any speed and undetermined duration.

No pattern exists when or where it happens.

Towards the end of yesterdays 250 mile ride, on a straight away, went WOT for about 2 seconds - Kill switch saved the day.

Another time, just before arriving home, when the stop light turned green, nothing happened, then excessive surging, lurching and attempts to WOT - kill switch needed again.

Current solution - Bike is permanently parked until it’s fixed.

Error codes = Nothing remarkable, just the standard 44 and 45.

Logs pulled. Odometer was noted right after the event(s). Who ever recently provided that tip - Thanks.

+++++++

Here’s some samples:

Do the "Batt Dischg Cur Limited" entries indicate a problem?

'Throttle fault' - First entry appeared on Feb16, 2020.
Prior to Feb 16, I had never seen a throttle fault in the logs.
Things were somewhat wonky the previous day.
The below sections are a small part of the logs.

The battery current discharge limiting could be normal, I would think probably caused by the temperature (the minimum cell voltage looks okay to me).

Looking up the error codes listed along with the throttle fault message doesn't really give any additional info (0x4981 means throttle fault, 0x1000 is a generic error, 0x00 is a generic error, and 0x01 is a current related error).

My guess as to the most logical solution would be to get a replacement throttle, being a mechanical component it's not unfeasible for it to go bad.

I would have your throttle looked at or straight up replaced.

I doubt it would cause an error message, if the throttle was giving a spurious input.

14 SR, ~45k miles, mode = Eco both days (2/15 and 2/16)

Hoping for Suggestions / Corrective action for the below?

++++++++++

Uncommanded acceleration

The past 2 days, the bike began to lurch, surged, and even several WOT’s.
The unexpected WOT’s were quite exciting.
I was just cruising, no spirited riding at all.

All this has happened to Shadow (who has been very busy lately, but is a moderator of this forum) here in Reno a couple of years ago. I had his bike towed to the dealer, so I know the details. His bike, however, was a 2016 DS.

He had one early warning sign, a complete loss of regen, so I wonder if that also happened to you.

There could have been one difference. His bike became  too dangerous to ride and he claims the kill switch then did not work and had to use the main key to stop the motor. That's when he stopped on the road about 5 miles from me and gave me a call.

The shop found his motor way out of commission. They were able to make the bike ride-able in a day or two,  but it still did not perform as it should. There was something wrong with the motor. A new motor fixed all  the problems.

IMO, you should tow your bike to the Zero shop. Don't ride it until fixed. And explain to the shop, so they don't try to ride it into the shop.

Indeed, I'd attach a big tag to the key saying STUCK THROTTLE DO NOT RIDE!

I'd hope it's just the Magura throttle potentiometer gone bad. https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Magura_Throttle

Maybe try to disconnect the 4-pin connector, measure the resistance across brown-blue and across brown-yellow, and see if they respond smoothly full range 0-5K?

Thanks to all for your suggestions and comments.

Throttle, I’ll replace it and see how it goes. Replacing it here is something I can do easily here.

TheRan - I learned something from your post about 0x... codes. I didn’t realize they were valid codes until now. Mechanical component - my thoughts exactly.
~~
Crissa - A replacement is the way to go.
~~
Curt - Good idea.
~~
DonTom - Good ideas and suggestions but,

Motor commissioning - not for a 14.

For repair, the only shop I now trust is Hollywood Electrics even though it’s 400 miles one-way.

Regen is fine. If I understand the logs correctly, a negative value when riding indicates regen is working. Also in Eco, every time the throttle went neutral, regen kicked in nicely. Here’s one of the summarized entries with negative values -  03331   02/15/2020 18:53:23 ...... MotAmps: -42, BattAmps: -27, .... Odo:72779km

If the throttle replacement doesn't work, I’ll be making a trip very soon.

~~

Tools used -
[1] Zero app worked very well. For the first 3 years I owned the bike, the app never worked for me.
[2] On-line parser worked great.
[3] Unofficial manual - lots of useful info there.

If you ever want to find out what the error codes mean this is the page from the manual that I used

Motor commissioning - not for a 14.
I know there are no commissioning adjustments for the 14, but is it still possible to be out of commissioning as the motor ages? Or did it use an entirely different method to run the motor? If it's different, I would like to know what the differences are.

Motor commissioning does not have a preventative maintenance schedule for pre-IPM motors, but it still can be done IIRC and can be necessary. The controller can't necessarily maintain alignment on its own in all circumstances. Or at least I wouldn't trust it to.

Of course, the throttle can be faulty, but there should be log indications more specific than what you're seeing, again IIRC.

How would a motor commissioning affect unintended throttle?

PWM motor timing can be critical. Perhaps two thin pluses can be timed so far off to be interrupted  intermittently by the motor as one long wide pulse for a higher speed. Can make the motor go crazy at a steady throttle.

I assume the motor itself changes first and then has to be adjusted to match. That is what seemed to happen with Shadow's bike, as the recommissioning only made the bike run and rideable, but nothing like normal until the new motor and recommissioned again, perhaps back to very close to what would have worked if only the motor was changed to begin with.

Anyway, that is my guess, as I do not have all the facts to be certain.

Anyone recall the "glitch" on 2012 Zero models?  That seemed to be a situation where the controller would loose its synchronization with the motor encoders and stall out while running.  Interestingly, Zero had a recall for that problem which apparently somehow reprogrammed the controller so that it would self-synchronize to the encoders while running. (Self-commissioning, perhaps?) I know that my 2012 S experienced that issue a couple of times, but after Zero did their thing with my bike at their factory, it never occurred again - until ending its life at the Zero 2012 recall crusher.   :(

Thanks to ‘evtricity’ for - "Domino Premium throttle to replace stock Magura throttle" - « on: March 21, 2015, 04:36:31 PM »
The thread made it all seem easy.
~~~~~
Domino throttle replacement went well.
No more problems with surging, lurching or WOT’s.
~~~~~
Domino Throttle - acquired from Amazon. Box contained:
[1] Two nice grips, one was already installed on the throttle.
[2] Connector and pins
[3] Instructions
It’s a very nice kit.
~~~~~
Replacement connector that came with the Domino throttle -
Maybe get a smaller connector for 3 pins as only three are required.
Crimper - I didn’t have the proper crimper for the provided pins but I did manage.
~~~~~
What I removed -
[1] Headlight
[2] Headlight bracket
[3] Display
[4] Gas tank (pseudo)

My interest was to allow myself lots of room.

The gas tank was removed to find the existing throttle cable connection.
The connection was fine.
~~~~~
14 SR throttle wiring is a little different than highlighted in thread -  Domino Premium throttle to replace stock Magura throttle « on: March 21, 2015, 04:36:31 PM »
     14 SR   |  Domino
[1] Black    |   White
[2] Brown   |   Black
[3] Blue      |   Blue
~~~~~
Old throttle - I ohmed it out. It was wacked.
~~~~~
Testing
For maximum safety, The following was adhered to:
[1] Rear stand used - rear tire up and free
[2] Side stand up
[3] Kill switch on
[4] Key on
[5] Custom mode selected - max torque set to zero percent.
[6] Rear tire, check again for freedom of movement
[7] Made note of how nice the weather is at this moment. Take deep breath and continue, this is it....
[8] Kill switch OFF
[9] All ok so far (thought, this is very good)
[10] Now, roll on ever so slowly.
[11] How nice is this, it’s working great.
[12] Note to self, the Domino throttle, less rotation for full throttle, I like it.
[13] Kill switch on
[14] Key off
[15] Reattach the headlight, clean up, put things away.
[16] Went for a nice long hard test ride.
[17] All ok, life is in balance again.
~~~~~
Motor commissioning was mentioned earlier in this thread even though it’s a 14. Now that the bike is ok again, I’ll look in to the feasibility of having it done.
~~~~~
Domino throttle grip - I removed it to reinstall my Koso Apollo heated grip.
The Domino grip wouldn’t come off, so I applied heat from a heat gun.
Removal was still somewhat difficult. Thought, maybe if the grip had been a bit warmer, it would have slipped off more easily. End result - the nice grip was saved.
~~~~~
Here’s another issue that occurred about a week before the throttle failed.
The mode switch was hardly working. I was stuck in Eco. Also, I couldn’t activate Bluetooth. I received a replacement from Hollywood Electrics just before the throttle became an issue. Harlan mentioned it was an easy change out.

I replaced it at the same time as the throttle.

After replacing - Modes and Bluetooth work as before.
The Kill / mode resides in the same housing.
So, there it is - two new switches installed.
The connector was just behind the headlight.
The change out was very easy.

Fantastic! Sounds like you ended up better than new. It almost makes me wish my throttle would go bad so I could get less rotation for full throttle. Nah, too much work.  ;)
