No mention of the FX or FXE  :'(

I was just talking to a Zero employee yesterday.   Those are both still in production in Scotts Valley.

AC charging is Dead and Dying. There is no R&D going into making smaller chargers and there are no incentives to build more 6kw AC chargers when government grants can be had to put in 150-350 kw DC chargers.

Except that no one is installing DC charging in their garage.   So decent speed AC charging is still important.  This is one reason why Livewire's decision to only do very slow AC and normal DC never really made sense to me.   Note that on their new bike, they included level 2 AC charging.

So, the price drop is on new left over 2023 bikes?  I see the video is 1 day old.  I don't know about you guys but the fees beyond msrp tend to be minimal for new left over bikes as least the smaller ones I pay attention to.

I think that dealers tend to offer big discounts off MSRP and then tack on larger than normal fees.   The out the door price on my DSR/X was about $17,750.  Sales tax, freight, dealer prep, doc/admin fees were $3750 of that $17,750.   Still a hell of a lot cheaper than the original $24,995 MSRP though.

I too have both an R1250GS and a DSR/X.   If where I want to travel is within range of the DSR/X, that is the bike I am taking virtually every time.  Quite often I am 2up with my wife.   The DSR/X is an easier bike to ride 2up due to the lack of gears and clutch.

I think at this point the DSR/X is Zero's best bike.   It certainly is their most comfortable.   And the deals that can be had in the USA on 2023 models make buying one a no-brainer.   Many dealers are selling them for the same price as they sold the DSR just a few years back.   It is way more bike than the 2nd generation DSR.

Is there something else wrong with the motorcycle that could be causing the battery to fail quickly?

The thing that I would be afraid of is if I had a bike still under warranty (2 year bike/5 year battery & charging components) and somehow the BMS, battery or controller were damaged.   A non-OEM charger would certainly make a warranty claim more difficult.  But if you have a 2018 or older then warranty isn't an issue.

Is changing a belt something an average moron such as ME can do themselves?

Aaron

I think on the newer, trellis frame models it is a procedure you can do on the roadside if you have a few tools and a spare belt.  Marc Travels replaced a belt on his SR/F on the side of the road about 6 months ago.   He says in his video it took him about 10 minutes.  He had 30,000 km on the belt.  Broke while accelerating.   The downside to a chain compared to a belt is that you will end up replacing both chain and sprockets.   In general, I don't think the pulleys wear out on a belt drive.

Livewire’s Next Motorcycle Will Be the S2 Mulholland

S2MH will be lighter, lower, and longer than the S2 Del Mar

Shipments of the Livewire S2 Del Mar should now be underway, and not a moment too soon, as Harley-Davidson’s electric brand needs to start gaining momentum after a very disappointing 2023. While we wait to see how the brand’s second model does, Motorcycle.com can exclusively report that Livewire’s next model will be called the Mulholland, and it will share the S2 platform introduced on the Del Mar.

We first caught wind of the name after the Harley-Davidson-owned brand filed a trademark application for “Mulholland” in April. At the time, we weren’t sure what to make of it, especially knowing there was a one-off Livewire One created last year by custom bike builder Alex Earle, called the E/Mulholland. We kept that on the back burner for a while until things started picking up, with Livewire filing more trademarks for “Mulholland” in multiple markets in October.

We can now confirm the name will be used for a Livewire S2 Mulholland, which we expect to be announced soon for the 2024 model year. The evidence comes to us from Harley-Davidson itself, which recently published an updated version of the 2024 Livewire S2 Del Mar’s owner’s and service manuals on its Service Information Portal site. Both documents make reference to the Mulholland, with the model code “S2MH”, along with other clues.

The S2MH model code is mentioned twice in both documents, once in a vehicle information number breakdown (embedded above) and in a specifications section detailing the dimensions and weights for the S2 models (both pictured further below).

The breakdown assigns the code “GD” as the fourth and fifth digits of the S2 Mulholland’s VIN, differentiating it from the Del Mar which uses the code “GC”.

The section on the S2 models’ dimensions includes the measurements for the Del Mar, but only the wheelbase and seat height of the Mulholland, suggesting that these manuals are still preliminary drafts. Assuming the measurements listed are accurate, the Mulholland will also have a wheelbase of 57.8 inches, or 0.6 inches longer than the Del Mar’s.

It also looks like the Mulholland will have a lower seat height of 30.25 inches compared to the Del Mar’s 30.9-inch saddle height (these are all laden heights, with a 180-pound rider, so the unladen seat height will be slightly higher).

Looking at the weights, we learn the S2MH claims a running weight of 429 pounds, which is 7 pounds lighter than the Del Mar. The gross vehicle weight rating is four pounds lighter than the Del Mar’s weight, but the gross axle weight ratings - the maximum load supported by either axle, are the same as the S2DM. This tells us that the two models are relatively similar, which comes as no surprise as they share the S2 Arrow platform, and thus many of the same parts.

Elsewhere, the updated manual adds in parentheses “S2 Del Mar” under the diagrams for attaching the seat and using the under-seat helmet lock. As with the flat track mode, these parentheses weren’t in previous versions of the manual. This implies both the existence of a second model, but also that it has a different seat, which would explain some of the difference in seat height.

The parenthetical note appears again in the section about ride modes. Livewire doesn’t talk about it much, but the Del Mar has a hidden Flat Track mode activated by switching to Sport mode and holding down the ride mode button. Previous versions of the owner’s manual describe the feature, explaining what it does and how to activate it. The updated manual adds parentheses in the description of Flat Track mode noting it is for the “S2 Del Mar only.” This again implies the existence of a second model, and that it would not have access to the flat track mode.

The Del Mar name is a reference to flat track racing at the Del Mar Arena, so a mode that disables the rear ABS and allows more wheel slip and front wheel lift makes sense. The lack of this mode plus the Mulholland name suggest a bike more suited to canyon carving than sliding on a dirt track. We suspect the Mulholland will also have different tires from the Del Mar’s Dunlop DT-1 rubbers.

Beyond these clues in the updated manuals, we don’t know very much about the Livewire S2 Del Mar. Considering the manuals are for the 2024 model year, we expect further details to trickle out very soon.

1. too many buttons

Can't be worse than an R1250GS, can it?    ;)   I have yet to figure out a simple way to reset the trip odo.

Or the new R1300GS where apparently you need to go into the menu to activate the heated grips?

If you're looking for something similar to how the FXS rides but like... a leap in features and build quality you should demo ride a LiveWire S2 Del Mar. It's what my brother will probably get if/when his FXS dies.

The Del Mar has a strange look probably due to the tire/wheel combination.  The 19" wheels and 80 series tires look big on the bike.  The bike doesn't look particularly passenger friendly and it is 125 lbs heavier than an FXS.   I think I would go with an FXE and spend $3000 less (or a lot less if I buy a leftover 2023) or a 2024 DS and spend $500 more.

Sold today to someone local who is into EVs and solar.  Long time motorcycle rider.  First electric motorcycle.   I bet it won't be his last.   Now when we complete our move to CA I need to find a replacement for the FXS so I won't have to ride my R1250GS all the time.    I'm thinking a slightly used DSR would be nice or maybe I can still find a great deal on a 2023 DSR/X.   I wonder if Zero still has any demo/press bikes in their fleet they might be willing to part with at a nice price?

Damn. At that price it should move quick.

Thanks.   I've had a bunch of low ball offers and crazy stories about how Zero says you have to replace the battery after 6 years.   That the battery isn't going to last another 12 months.   That Zero no longer supports the motor and controller - despite the fact that they are still making the FX and FXE with the same motor and controller for 2024.   Any excuse to try to justify their low ball offer.

If we weren't moving across country I would keep this bike and run it until it dies.   I just may end up renting a bigger truck and moving it with our furniture.   I already did that with my R1250GS.   The FXS will take up a lot less space in the truck, is half the weight and I don't have to worry about gas, oil or chain grease getting on anything.
