Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Another glitch
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:31:28 AM »
My 2012 DS ZF9 has developed an annoying glitch. I feel and hear a little "thud" sound from the motor and all of the sudden all the power is lost. Applying throttle even causes a slowdown if moving; applying throttle while standing still will induce a slight *backwards* motion. The usual reset with the ignition key takes care of that glitch usually, however I needed to do that at least 7 times Friday to get moving :(

Saturday, I lost power while in a tight curve and almost fell.

Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / On board charger failure?
« on: July 12, 2012, 09:34:13 AM »
I rode to work today and plugged my bike in, as usual. I used 5 bars going in. When I came back to ride it back home I was surprised to see that the bike isn't fully charged (after 9+ hours of charging). It was missing the top two bars.

I initially thought someone knocked off my power cable but when I came back home, I plugged the bike in and my kill-a-watt meter is showing no current going in. I plugged in the quick charger and the bike is charging fine with that.

I checked the red fuses on the "tank" and they seem to be OK. What else could I check before calling the service?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Loose mirror
« on: June 07, 2012, 02:31:41 AM »
The right hand mirror on my DS became loose to the point that wind dislodges it easily. Only the connector from the mirror casing to the stem is loose, the extender is fine. I have looked but I don't see any obvious ways of tightening it. Any tips?

Parts, Mods And Hacks / J1772 to 2 110V power outlets?
« on: May 30, 2012, 12:29:24 AM »
I'd like to be able to charge my 2012 DS off a J1772 socket using the onboard charger and a separate QuiQ quick charger. I tried searching the internet for such a device but I came empty. So I am thinking of making one.

Electrical connections seem simple enough but signaling part is where it gets a bit complex. Wikipedia article on J1772 says I need to generate a pilot signal to tell the charging station to connect power to the connector -- are there any off the shelf components to generate that pilot?

Are there any simpler solutions to what I am trying to accomplish? I am aware of the Zero provided J1772 connector but that one just connects to the internal charger.

I would like to buy an extra power cable for the internal charger. The socket looks just like a PC power supply socket but most PC cables are 18 AWG which is way too small for charging the bike. I was looking for either 14 AWG or 12 AWG cable but had no luck finding anything relevant on Amazon.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Street tires for Zero DS?
« on: May 16, 2012, 11:32:38 PM »
I have put 1500 miles on my DS in a month but I never took my DS offroad. I am thinking about putting street tires on it. Any recommendations?

While on the subject of tires, when should I expect to change existing tires? I read somewhere that the tires should be changed at 5,000 miles but that seems too short.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Corbin seat?
« on: May 07, 2012, 01:32:52 AM »
One of the accessories Zero offers is a Corbin seat (either low profile or regular). I find the stock 2012 Zero DS seat uncomfortable on longer rides and Corbin has a reputation for comfort. The thing that turns me off though is that I will be unable to try the seat before I buy it.

Any opinions on Corbin seats?

... was a non-event. Done in 30 minutes, everything looking good :)

Loosely Zero related: How long does it take for the California DMV to mail the plates and a permanent proof of registration? I misplaced the dealer-provided temporary proof of registration of my Zero.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Quick charger?
« on: April 21, 2012, 09:43:22 AM »
I got the quick charger as a part of my Zero DS deal but I am finding no good use for it. When I arrive home I am charging overnight and the bike is ready to go in the morning. I guess if I rode in the AM and emptied "the tank" then had a lunch break while the bike was quickcharging then I could go riding in the PM as well but so far this hasn't happened yet.

Did you get a quick charger for your Zero and are you using it?

Zero DS "Features" page says "Ability to accommodate a passenger with an optional accessory". What kind of accessory is it? I have not seen it in the dealer's catalog. Did anyone install it?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Ordered Zero DS ZF9

I just ordered my 2012 Zero DS ZF9 :) Dealer told me it should be there Saturday!

Zero S looks like a fun bike to ride. I am considering a purchase but have a few questions.

I am not an experienced rider (unless riding a bicycle counts :] ), in fact this would be a first motorcycle I'd ride in about 10 years. I used to have a CBR-600 but I got rid of it as it was a money/maintenance black hole. I read on these forums the Zeroes are very forgiving (due to having no clutch). True?

My daily commute consists of about 20 miles of CA Hwy 101 plus about 3 miles on local roads (one way). I should be able to squeeze a round trip from a ZF9 but in case I am not I am considering adding the J1772 socket. The parking lot at work has some juice outlets for electric vehicles so I could probably use those. The question is: is it possible to add J1772 socket to 2012 S ZF9? The online store only has it for 2011 models.

At 6'4" and 250 lbs I am not exactly the smallest guy around. Isn't Zero S too small for me? How comfortable is your ride if you're tall?

Perhaps this last question is better directed at a dealership but here it goes anyway: are there any discounts off MSRP available (except CA $900 tax credit)?

Thanks for reading and replies!
