Title: 2018 incentive
Post by: vinceherman on October 29, 2018, 07:13:26 PM
I am heading to the dealership Saturday to talk about their demo 2018 SR.
Is there a formal incentive offer for the demo models?  They are offering $1800 off.

If I buy, I will be trading in a 2007 Goldwing 120,000 miles (KBB says trade in value is 7,800 and retail is 11,000)  Normal wear, scuffs and scratches from a tight garage, a tear in the seat.
Any advice on trading in?  I have never done it with a bike.

For me it was the same as with a car:
* bad market
* not the good color
* bla bla bla

🤣😎

I would add that the "Blue Book Value" is a pretty worthless number when it comes to negotiating with a dealer.  This comes from YEARS of experience, unfortunately...

I would not expect to get the KBB price range that you quoted on a bike that is 11 years old with 120K miles even if it is a Gold Wing.  It's just not going to happen.  A bike in that condition isn't going to be worth much because there's no market for it except for parts.

You will always get the lowest price possible for a trade-in with a dealer. But there is the advantage that it makes it so easy. Slow methods to sell anything  usually  means you will get a much better price. Expect to get around half of what it's worth when you sell to a dealer. I really have no problem with the way it all works. The dealers need to pay a lot of bills and they usually cannot give a good deal  on trade-ins.

I just traded in my 2002 Ford  Mustang on a new Tesla Model 3. I decided that I have way too many cars (but can anybody have too many motorcycles?) and on the day before  to pick up my Tesla, I decided to get rid of the Mustang. The Bluebook said it was worth around 5K$, I got less than half of that from Tesla, but it was very fast and easy to get rid of. I really have no complainants. I often pay some  bucks just for convenience.

Back in 2015 I got a 2015 SR demo late in the season ~December out of state for ~$12000 OTD.  MSRP at the time was ~16,000.  The bike had 800 miles on it and it was dropped once but I could only tell by the pegs.

Are the 2019 bike the same price as the 2018?  My local dealer indicated that the SR was the same price.
This is going to make me rethink this.  I am not sure $1800 off is enough to justify a shorter warranty and potential demo abuse.

Perhaps the more important thing to consider is what impact a year newer model will make on the bike's resale value.  ;)

Well, now I know what the dealership values my Goldwing at.  Zero (no pun intended).
They did not even make an offer.
Too many miles and too old.
They were not insulting about it.  Just explained their business practices and values.
Gave me advice about selling it myself.
Cycle trader here I come.

Yep, doesn't surprise me at all.  I think the only reason someone would offer anything at all for it is possibly for parts.

Yup.  The professionals in the used car market know that people will take
thousands less than they could have gotten if it's cash on the table and
not having to deal with craigslist flakes and lowballers wasting your time.

With regards to the incentive, I suspect it will vary
with stock available.  I was at SFMOTO and they had
demo sale tags on a couple of bikes.  If Zero has old
stock, I don't think there'll be a loud announcement
but rather they'll feed it to dealers who think they can
move units to price sensitive buyers or whatever.  Or
they may move them as incentives to owners of older
Zeros to upgrade.  I'd suspect they still would like to
get some of those pre-2012 bikes off the road.

So how does one inquire about demo models for sale if my local Zero shop doesn't have any? Call Zero corporate? Would like to know what is available and is this regional?

I have a dealership 25 minutes away in Cleveland and another 2:25 away in Columbus.  I did my test rides in Columbus since I was in the area.  They currently have several 2018 demos $1800 off.
The Cleveland shop is down to only 1 or 2 of the dirt models.  But the Cleveland shop said they have full access to inventory from any regional dealerships.  I did not get that same helpful detail when I was in Columbus.
Oh, the Cleveland shop is only offering $1500 off of their 2018's.

Call your local dealership and see what they have and if they can get models from other dealerships.

There are reliable reports of substantially larger discounts. Tease them with the cash, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the replies, the closest dealer to me wasn't helpful at all so I'll check another dealer about 50 miles from me

Did you get a deal?

Haven't pulled the trigger yet and never made it out to the other dealer. Work's been crazy busy (usually the opposite this time of year but not this year) - I'm still getting one but most likely after the new year now

I don't know what your travel parameters or profile is but you obviously ride a lot and unless those are all commuting miles, perhaps you should consider keeping your ICE bike for a while. There may be times when you want to do a road trip that exceeds the comfortable range of the EV.

In any case while now is a good time to buy a motorcycle, the spring would be a better time to sell. Having said all that I think Cycle Trader is good marketplace, and there may be a Used Bike dealer that would let you sell on consignment. I don't think I would try and sell anything with any substantial value on Craigslist. Too risky and time consuming.

That depends on where. I am now in Tucson, AZ with my Zero DS ZF 6.5 and these 70F days in  December  are  probably the very peak of the motorcycle season here. Spring and summer could be too hot for riding.

This is perfect riding weather here. That's why I am here!

I took the bike on a ramp on my trailer hitch on my RV.  These E-bikes can safely go up the ramp on their own power with me walking it up, because of he excellent low end throttle response without a need for a clutch.

It's possible that Zero may again offer specially priced and equipped limited editions in the early part of the year in order to move left over inventory like they did in February with the DSR Limited Edition.  The pricing along with the added options made this a really good deal and would be worth waiting for IMO.

Just an update - I did sell my Goldwing.  I got $3500 for it, which I think is fair considering the miles, age and a few minor issues.
Certainly, there was pain involved, with the Cycle Trader listing generating a large number of scam offers.  But it sold.  :-D
Now on to the planning for the purchase this spring!

Thanks and keep us posted on your progress. Too bad you didn't get more out of your Gold Wing.
