Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / New Zero Dealer - Puerto Rico!

I stopped by on Saturday, they were surprised there was already a Zero on the island and were very interested and asked me lots of questions about my experience with the bike so far. They gave me a free T-shirt and put me on their Facebook page so that was cool.

I just moved to Puerto Rico (where I'm from) and brought my 2014 SR. I added my bike to the world map.

I had a similar experience with the local DMV. When I went to get the license plate they could not give me one because Zero the brand was not in their system, I had to wait a couple of weeks so they could update their system before they called me back and I was able to get a plate. So I'm pretty sure I am the first Zero on the island. For insurance I just got the basic coverage for now.

Electric bikes do great here, you are never going that fast (60 mph or less) so my efficiency/range so far is way better than it was in VA where I was always traveling 65-70 mph. It rains a lot so water tightness of connections is important.

Maybe related, but I did not ride in the rain before I plugged in, but I fried the on board charger the first time I plugged it in (110v). Fortunately I already had an Elcon 3.3 off board and got a DeltaQ off board from AF1 as a backup and to charge to 100% once in a while. For now I will not take the chargers with me and only charge at home from the 220v dryer circuit as much as possible.

The only electric bikes I have seen on sale here are the Niu electric scooters, there is a dealer here, but that's it. https://caribbeanmotorcycles.com/collections/niu-electric-scooters

If the bike breaks and I can not fix it myself I have a rolling brick. We'll see.

@ 55 fast miles/commuting day, I do a LOT of charging.
I’ve found that the weak link is the crimp connections on the end of cords.
I’ve replaced both ends of a 6’ 14awg cord with plug/socket that has screwed (clamp) connections.
Ive removed a bit from the end of the c13 plug to allow greater insertion/contact.
Also replaced the OBC frame mounted socket with a screw clamp type.
All 3 connections run just slightly above ambient.

I’m crossing my fingers the the connections @ the OBC are robust enough.

Great tips!

They also sell this one the Power Cable Plus:

https://www.daddario.com/products/accessories/cables/power-solutions/iec-power-cable-102/

https://www.amazon.com/DAddario-Accessories-Power-Cable-America/dp/B078V6DS9F/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=daddario%2B12%2Bawg%2Bamp%2Bpower%2Bcable&qid=1624285076&sr=8-3&th=1

This one could be useful if you want to power the OBC plus an ELCON 3.3 from the same source, but it would be pushing it in terms of amps.

I would rather buy it from D'Addario than take my chances on EBAY where the description does not always match what you will receive.

Same reason I bought my charger from ELCON instead of straight from TC in China.

Then you are left with options 2/3. There is a D'Addario 12 gauge Amp cable you could try instead of the stock one.

General Discussion / Re: Phone mounts
« on: June 21, 2021, 06:55:13 PM »
Someone else made a brilliant suggestion. Buy a cheap, used smartphone of some kind. Doesn't really matter what it is. Mount that on the motorcycle. When you go anywhere, keep your REAL phone in your pocket and set it up as a wireless hotspot. Tether the cheap stupid phone to your real phone and let it get abused by road vibrations.

I do this. Samsung A32 "stunt" phone on a Ram mount. Free from T-Mobile w trade in. I traded in a Nokia 925 windows phone. Samsung S20 FE provides Hotspot.

1. Charge with the OBC at 220 volts, cuts amps in half. If you have a dryer outlet in your house you can plug into that with an adapter. Or a Tuscon EV adapter/splitter to the OBC.

2. Some people here have modified the plug so it goes in deeper into the socket for better contact.

3. Get a new cable before this one dies and takes the OBC with it.

Well, that's a convection mess ^-^

But yes, adding the exhaust fan should keep the intake fan from drawing dead air.

-Crissa

Agreed but the Elcon fan blows down so the extra fan flow has to go with the flow if I flipped it to blow into the box the two flows would collide and go up which is worth trying with the lid open.

Where does the hot air exit the box?

-Crissa

The elcon fan blows down on the fins, hot air exits left/right, the blue fan blows out to help get hot air out of the box.  I keep the lid open for now I might try closing the lid to see how it works.

Correct, as Don quoted me, the charger comes with the following inputs:

AC - Elcon to a Sumitomo, then Sumitomo to a NEMA 5-15p plug.
DC - Elcon to Anderson "Gray", then Anderson "Gray" to Anderson "Brown" that plugs in to the brown connector above the motor. This last part is an extra $25.

I bought a slightly larger toolbox at Home Depot and customized it by:

Adding a 12v LED fan connected to the 12v output in the CANBUS connector to help the stock Elcon Fan. The LED lets me know the charger is on if I can not hear the stock fan.

Second I bolted the charger to the bottom of the box so it does not move around.

Finally, I cut some slots to let the wires leaving the Elcon go straight out of the box without kinks.

I had a bicycle toolbox and tried it and it just fits. Will try a larger box to provide space for more accessories/adapters and possibly adding 12v fans.

I will probably end up doing something like this:

Yes I will probably remove the plate but It really needs some handles to make it easier to move it around. Maybe put some rubber feet in those bottom mounting holes after removing the plate to keep the bottom off the ground.
