« on: May 16, 2024, 09:13:05 PM »
Any one encounterd Sevcon CAN Link Down before?

The first time it happend; the bike was charging overnight; So i did not notice it.
Than it happend when I was driving. I suddenly lost power.

Because the Logs showed the SEVCON CAN link was lost; my first tought was that it could be a broken wire.
I checked the wiring; and I could not find any damage. I also tried to see if the CAN Link would go down; if I was fumbling with the CAN wirering. Sadly this is also not the case...

I'm a bit afraid that my SEVCON is dying.... Did anyone have a SEVCON dying in 5 years or after 21.000 km?

the first time it happend to my bike was apperently when it was charging. But only now I am noticing it when i'm driving.
It seems like

Dear Domingo,

could you send me the 2 files with bin extension?
Than I could try to run them through my python / excel file.

Are you able to make the one-way commute of 45 miles? (up and down, do you drive up a mountain?)
How much SOC does your dash show when you do the 45 miles commute?

It is not really possible to determine range expectations from the logs; This since the log does not show how the driver is accelerating and if it is raining.
It could only give you a broad estimate.

Battery health
I check the battery health by charging the bike till 100%, than driving it till it won’t turn on anymore. (make sure the battery is empty around your house since you will be pushing it home).
Then I look at the "Discharge level xxx AH". If you have a Nominal battery capacity of 12.6kWh the maximum "Discharge level" should reach about  126 Ah = 12600Wh / ~100V (theoretically)

Last week I drove till 0% SOC on the dash, 5% SOC in the logs (the SOC on the dash is not the same as the SOC of your BMS), and I had a discharge level of about 111 Ah.

Range estimate
If you really want to have an range estimation…. Which will only give you a broad general indication…
you have to drive the rest of the SOC under the same circumstances etc.

You can use the starting SOC% and ending SOC% of a ride, together with the starting ODO km with ending ODO km.
Your expected range = (ending ODO km - starting ODO km) / (starting SOC% - ending SOC%) * 100
Your expected range = (7207- 7153) / (72 - 34) * 100
Your expected range = 54 / 38 * 100
Your expected range = 142 km

142 km = 88.2 mile

Bike use
Having calculated all this; from your logs; and looking at my own experience with my Zero S 2019.
Here in the Netherlands I would not worry about a 45 mile commute driving 70 mph in all weather conditions.
Do have to charge each 45 mile commute tho.

Dear Stivikivi,

I would not really trust anything the app says except the current voltage.
When charging at a charging point I also noticed that my bike keeps drawing about 1 KW/h even when the battery is fully charged, not sure why. but it does mean that I’m unable to use a public charger to determine the amount of power that went in the battery if I don’t check when the bike reaches 100%

To check if my battery is still okey I usually check the Discharge level of the logs. There is a "AH" counter. When charging the bike and driving it to 0% on the dash (this gives about 5% SOC), the AH counter should be about 111 AH? (110 x 100V = 11 100 KWh)

The biggest Take away is probably the same as Aaron mentioned. SOC and Range indication aren't an exact science; simply because you cannot predict the future.

For me the bike is quite reliable. When I drive a specific route the SOC usage is usually about the same (a deviation of 5% of SOC on the dash). This holds unless there are strong winds or temperature differences.

So when you know your daily route, and you still have 15% left. You can be quite sure to usually make it. (Disclamer, this is my experiance tho)

Dear Stivikivi,

Could you share your avarage drive speed?
I think that has the biggest impact on your range.

I did a few range tests on the zero myself... That time I still tought the spec, 144km at 113km/h was usable.....
The Netherlands; where I drive is flat, I get about 120km-130km when I drive 100km/h.

Take note that the SOC on the dash does not run completely linear with your distance at a constant speed.

7
*'estimated range' is the range I would be able to drive with 100% off the battery, while driving an average calculated speed.
This range is estimated based on each ride that I do. Looking at the used SOC %, ODO meter and start and end times of the ride. So, when I wait for a traffic light, it will affect this range.
This method is not used to create hard core correct values; but it does give an indication on average (after 60 km/h )

8

How did you extract your SOC and voltage values? I have done such extractions from the logs on very small periods of time and it took me hours! See here for instance.

Dear GT

There is a way to retrieve the MMB and BMS logs and make them readable https://zero-motorcycle-community.github.io/browser-parse/zero-log-parser.html via the official zero app.

It takes about 5 minutes using my phone to extract the log files, then another 5 minutes run the python script and letting excel update the graphs
let me know if you are interested; I could send you the files and scripts.

Dear all,
Thank you for this interesting discussion and information.
It indeed feels like a quite complex and self-correcting algorithm.

I think we can all agree that Zero dit put effort into this. And not only Zero, but other EV's like Energica, Tesla and volkswagen will have trouble for a perfect estimation.
It’s great that the companies are trying to find a reliable method. I'm sure it is not easy.
I’ve added a graph showing the SOC and Pack Voltage while charging. This is a plot that shows all charges from 2020 till today. While there is are relation between the SOC and Pack Voltage, it is shown that it is not always 1 on 1.

Like Aaron said, it is probably good to have a ball park figure so that you don't have to worry about it.
My ball park figure is that 1% is about 1.3km (Zero S 14.4 Kw) ;) that works quite well, until the percentage suddenly rises; Than I have more  :D

I did notice a few times while riding that the percentage sometimes stays at e.g. 9% for quite a while and then suddenly increases when I drive slower. I always thought it would be something like regenerative breaking. However that didn’t exactly fit the behaviour. Using multiple determination methods; and correcting between them would indeed explain it better.

Funny thing this morning when i was getting the logs from my motorcycle. My SOC was going up. while getting the logs.
Down here you can find the BMS log.

The Pack SOC% is increating; while the Vpack is behaving as per normal. Does anyone know how the PackSOC is calculated? I always suspected it was related to the Vpack. But looking at this; there is propably a calculation taking the Current use into account.

"an entierly unque feature to zero motor cycles" Not sure what that means.

Not sure how it works on energicas; but do you have to start your bike with the kill switch in off posiiton?

But i actually do really like the fact that we live in a time where you get more functions simply because of a software update.
I don see a park mode aparing on my ICE bike which did not have it before

Wouldn't the following suffice?

https://www.amazon.com/Century-Indoor-24-Hour-Mechanical-Outlet/dp/B01LPSGBZS/ref=sr_1_5

With my Zero S, i know every hour is about 10% so I set the timer accordingly and, done.

From de Zero website it looks like a full 17.3 Kwh hour pack. This propably means no Cyper buy upgrades anymore?  ;D

The main thing i'm worried about with Cypher III is the magic charging; reading this forum makes me think all Cypher III vehicles have magic charing problems. Not sure if that is true tho.
