Perhaps my comment was a little blunt but we're essentially saying the same thing, Doug.

Anyway, the final marks for his degree will pull no punches and at this rate looks like it'll be the harshest of all. Better to have some honesty now when it might help, than when it's too late.

Sounds like he needs to change majors.  And I don't care if that hurts someone's feelings.  Reality will sort it out eventually.
