The bike is working fine in all respects, there is nothing of importance in the release notes, and no safety recall notice or update advice from Zero. It would be utterly foolish for me to go to a dealer, out of boredom or curiousity, and risk my reliable wonder-toy getting bricked (many examples of that here) or start second-guessing whether some future problem was due to the "upgrade" (many examples of that here).

Yep, I've read enough horror stories on this forum about problems that occurred after an update was done too.  It's what has scared me off from doing any.

The green light is broken, if it doesn't turn on.
The green charging light comes on fine.  It just doesn't turn off after the bike is 100% charged and you unplug the charge cord.  You have to turn the key to on and then off to get the light to go out.  Again, just a nuisance that's all.

Besides, how do you know you're not affected by a bug?
Because other than the minor charge light issue, the bike runs great.

I had a stuck contactor once on my 2017 DSR (probably my fault) but it was an easy fix.  Other than that, no issues whatsoever.

BTW, I have not done any firmware updates.  It has the same firmware since it was new and I plan to keep it that way.

I do have the same issue that someone else else reported where the green charging light stays on after the bike is fully charged, but I consider that to be more of a nuisance than a maintenance issue.

It is very easy to make the adjustment to the rear wheel alignment to get the 1mm gap, so just go ahead and do that and see if that has any affect on the pulsating you're describing.  You want to have that small gap between the belt and rear pulley anyway.

I would certainly think that you can just replace the throttle return spring.  The spring is very tricky to install.  I had to reinstall mine when I took the throttle clam shell apart to install heated grips.  I used a flat blade screwdriver that I modified with a notch to grab the end of the spring and rotate it around into place.

I agree that what you are describing is the typical new bike belt groan.  There is plenty of information here on how to adjust and center the belt.  You want to adjust the belt to the loosest end of the range and position it so there is about a 1mm gap between the belt and edge of the rear pulley.  The groan seems to get more pronounced when it's wet.  BTW, I have a 2017 DSR.

I tend to agree with Vinceherman that it is more important to get the belt aligned properly.  That's how I do my rear wheel alignment and it seems to work fine.  I  leave about a millimeter gap between the belt edge and the outer lip on the rear sprocket.

I think that adding lights to increase your visibility is the best safety measure you can take on a motorcycle.  I highly recommend adding some auxiliary running lights up front.  I mounted these to my Zero crash bars on my DSR.  Crash bars would be another good safety item.

BTW, the price on the Heise running lights from Amazon are a bargain right now.  I paid over twice that a year or so ago.  (These are now back up to the regular price.)

I also converted my front turn signals into running lights.  See this thread.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Ahhhhhhhh Heated Grips
« on: November 20, 2019, 02:21:59 AM »
When it get's really cold, I use a combination of handlebar muffs and heated grips.  This combination works very well for me.  Heated glove liners are nice, but I don't want to be tethered by any cables and don't want to have to constantly charge or replace batteries.

I own a 2017 DSR and one of the things I don't quite get is some of the comments I've read on this forum and in reviews of the SR/F, which seem to suggest that anything other than the SR/F in Zero's lineup is less than a complete motorcycle.  Comments like "the SR/F feels likes it's made from a whole cloth", as if the other Zero models are just cobbled together afterthoughts.  And comments like in this post that "the DSR felt too much like a bicycle on steroids", really?

I also ride a 1997 Honda Valkyrie so I'm used to riding big bikes.  I owned a Zero FXS and now a DSR and nothing about them makes me think these are somehow less than real, legitimate motorcycles.  I use my DSR mostly for everyday commuting on city/county roads, but I also occasionally take in on the highway and I have complete confidence in it on the highway.

If your looking for a big long distance cruiser in an electric motorcycle then of course you are going to be disappointed.  That's not the niche that these bikes are designed for.  In that case save yourself some money and buy an ICE bike.

The only "H3" version I can find on Amazon are the fog lamps, and I don't know if that'll work (or is even recommended).

I found this on the internet so it would appear that the Sylvania ZXE H3 bulb can be used in your headlight, but you should do your own research before buying them.

"What are H1 and H3 bulbs?
Before we get into the differences between H1 and H3 bulbs, let's discuss what exactly these bulbs are and their uses. H1 and H3 bulbs are both a type of halogen bulb. They're both approved for general use in the European Union, US, and Japan. This means that they can be used as headlights as well as for other purposes, such as fog lights, turn signals etc."

My apologies, I made a typo.  I meant to say the FX/FXS model takes an H3 bulb, which is single intensity.  Sorry for the confusion. However, it doesn't appear that Sealight makes an H3 bulb.

For those that are interested in an H4 LED bulb.  The Sealight website has a twin pack on sale for $40, which is a bargain.

The X platform means FX and FXS bikes, which takes a single intensity/element H4 bulb.  The other bikes use a dual intensity H4 bulb.

That's interesting Doug, I believe that's exactly the same LED bulb in link I provided except that it's packaged as one bulb the labeled for motorcycles.  The two pack is a much better deal if you can use both of them.  I really like everything about the bulb.  I have had it installed for about a year now without any issues.  I highly recommend it.
