48 volt old school electric mini bike
« on: November 14, 2008, 11:45:58 PM »

Hi, NewAge here, I built this electric mini bike for my son earlier this year, it is 48 volt powered by an E-tek motor and an Alltrax programmable controller, it is geared to do 50 mph which it does in under 6 seconds, very scarey, hope you like it. ;D

That is very nice -- quite a bit faster than my old minibike.

Do you have any more pictures?

Wow, 50 mph must be crazy on that :D  Nice work, cool little minibike.

Are the brakes on the other side?  I think I see a lever.  Guess you could drop a Nike down.  :D

Thanks for the interest, the batteries are B&B EVP20 ah, it whole thing is linked up with 6awg wire, there are two Quda 100 watt DC-DC converters that run the two 55 watt headlights, the LED maltese cross tail light, and some purple glow treatment (it's fun to ride at night). The brake is a rear drum and although it works good it is marginal for how quick and fast the mini runs. More photos  :)

Thanks for the extra pics.  Love the headlights!

Any plans for another creation?

Yeah Bogan, It definitely has it flaws but we have learned to treat it with the respect it demands, through programming I can tame it down so that it has the manners of a little lamb, but program it to 100% output and you are in for an exciting experience, surprisingly it has good stability under hard exceleration and at full speed, but the brakes have all they can handle especially since the minis dry weight is 140 lbs.

This may be difficult to answer as you probobly ride it in a parking lot, but what would you say the range of this beast is.  I am a newbie and like it because it is so basic but want to understand how far it could go at 50 MPH to help me understand this stuff.  If that is nuts then how about going at 30 mph how far would that take you.  Also how do you know it does 50 MPH does it have a speedo on it, or did you race a car or something?

I used GPS and it did 53 mph. I can go 10 miles on a full charge at full blast. I run it at night on the less traveled roads. Very exciting  ;D

I love the old school bike! Would be killer with a motor that can do regen you can set on the fly. But I would add some more brake power for 50+mph. Or if you want to have some fun add another 12volt batt and hit the freeway as is.

You can try and buy the control box from zeroto help control speeds. the one near the handle bar the shows batt lvl and also has a easy/sport mode and also a 0-50 - 0-30 switch. I opened the box and took a look, The thing has some smarts to it, Looks a good way to control the altrax with out a reprogram all the time.
