Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Money for Zero might get you CCS
« on: October 07, 2022, 02:11:27 AM »
Not that its gospel, but my dealer said Zero has no intention to go CCS anytime soon.
I don't see them doing it until the next major refresh.  So the question becomes - how long are they going to ride out the SR* platform.  10 years?
I was hoping maybe there would be a significant platform change around 2024 or 2025.  In all of the Exro interviews I've watched, they say their target to have their product installed in the Zero bikes was that time frame.

Thats what I'm dragging my feet on.  I want to see what the next two years brings.  Then I'll decide between another Zero - or whether I move to Energica or if its an option by then a Ducati.

That EXRO stuff is pretty cool.  Closest analogy to I can come to ICE tech is Koenigsegg's free-valve technology.  They are dynamically changing the torque profile of the motor by leveraging their controller to activate different winding patterns in the motor.  The material i've watched states that the technology isn't a game changer on motorcycles, if I remember right they said 3-5% efficiency gain.  Their primary target market is heavy load EVs.  But - It'll be neat to see what that looks like on the Zero platform after some development.
I bought some of their stock.  I think they might be a good long term hold.

Ok, mean, The famous beast mode is just a legend. Sport mode is already at maximum.

Right, but if you want to do something different with regen.  I have my braking regen set to 100% and my coasting regen is at 30 or 40%

You can program custom modes and have 1 loaded in the bike.  I think a lot of people just name it beast mode, and then set the power to 100%.
Thats more or less how I have my custom mode set.

You mean just the power slider moved to 100% and the other ones left at 0%?

I think you know what I meant.  Why would anyone set the power to 100% and the torque to zero?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Initial Service Cost
« on: July 21, 2020, 08:22:47 PM »
Zero’s reliance on telepresence for troubleshooting has been a bottleneck for servicing, and generally bad as a requirement.

As an option, telepresence is a great idea for training and communication, but blocking a maintenance or servicing action on it just raises costs for everyone and clogs up service departments with bikes waiting on both the dealer and OEM tech to schedule availability.

Oh I completely agree.  My SR/F was an earlier bike, took delivery last June.  I was under the assumption that was exactly why Zero was doing it that way.  For training and to do some data collection before opening the flood gates.  I'm not unhappy with the service and turnaround I've had.  They had my bike for a few hours on the first service.  I just had the BMS and harness done under warranty, and I got the bike back in about two weeks.

Are bigger dealerships impacted by it more?

My dealer charged me a half hour to do the 600 mile service.  I remember he said at the time they had to do it with Zero on the phone, but that Zero was releasing an update to dealers that would allow them to do it on their own.

On the SR/F it tapers.  It starts at 60%.
I've only run mine down under 10% once.  There is definitely a power cut at 60%, and if I remember right there was another at 20% and then it really pulled the power back at 10%.
Its definitely SOC where it imposes the limits, and as other have said its torque output and top speed.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: SR / F damaged by rain?
« on: June 25, 2020, 09:17:05 PM »
Mine is in for warranty repair right now because of water intrusion.
I've ridden in the rain a few times and not had problems.  But a few weeks ago I washed it (per the manual with a garden hose) and must have had some water intrusion.  Bike would run intermittently.  Had errors, and if I shut it off it needed at least 30 minutes before it would move again.
Dealer called me back and said Zero was sending a new BMS out.  He said on the earlier SR/Fs there was an issue with some pins on the BMS being too short.  Not sure what bearing that would have on water intrusion, but I guess thats what Zero told him.  I think based on posts here its a fairly common issue with the early VIN bikes.

I'm no where near that!  My daily is diesel truck, F-450.  Part of why I got the bike was not just fuel savings, but saving wear and tear on the truck.  Short trips just add unnecessary heat cycles and they are just harder on the truck.
So I figure the bike has saved me about $600 in fuel so far.  I have the SR/F and I'm just about to hit 3k miles.
Worked out it cost 2 cents a mile to operate the SR/F in electricity cost.  But then we have a 'special fuel' tax which pulls that out to 5 cents a mile.  (The tax was more than I spent on electricity, which I think is just madness).
Its not such a good deal when you add in tires.  I'll be on my third rear tire.  Last tire made it about 200 miles before it got a nail in it.

I have been thinking about piecing together a DIY solar system to charge the bike.  I think I know what I need, but does anyone have any good write ups or recommendations thats done it?

Maybe I'm doing it wrong...  but I've ridden in the rain a few times and down a muddy gravel road...  my riding jacket never gets dirty.  I must be going too fast    ;)  I think the plate extends the fender enough that the tire doesn't throw anything that can reach me.  Mine does stick out a little further than yours.  I like what you did, better though.
I do get a little more wet in the front since I took my fender off, though.

The only one I've seen was a guy that had his done in black.

Kind of a funny side story.  Everyone over in the facebook group gave me a *ton* of shit over how I have my license plate mounted.  Its bolted directly to the plastic cover over the turn signal mounts, so its at an angle.  Police around here couldn't care less.

What they do care about...  is the fact that my registration says its a red bike.  I got pulled over as a courtesy to make sure the bike wasn't stolen.

Thats a laser cut custom sticker for the SR/F.  I've seen the same design on another bike.  You can see some close ups in some of the videos and the quality isn't that good up close.  Does look awesome from a few feet away, though.
I wrapped mine a few days after delivery.  I ordered too much vinyl to be safe and in case I needed to redo anything.  I spent $120 8ft of 3M vinyl and then maybe another couple bucks for surface prep and tools.  Already had a heat gun.  I spent another $50 on another color vinyl to cover the silver parts, but haven't done those yet.  Was starting to think about plastidip for those parts.

Zero issues with my SR/F so far.

I'm pretty sure I said that somewhere in that mess.  I have a premium with 6kw.  Its not an option on Energica.  I said the 3kw level 2 the Energica has just wouldn't work for me.  I can justify hanging out somewhere for an hour to get 60% back in the battery.  I can't justify waiting 2 hours for the same range on a 3kw system.  So - yes I understand that.
I'm not saying the Energica is bad, though.  I was about to buy one, dealer proximity be damned.  Was real close to pulling the trigger on the SS9.  Last year I waited to see what the hype was about on the SR/F, and decided that was the best direction to go for my geography.  If I was on the west coast - i might have followed through on the Energica.

All I was trying to get across was that the bike isn't rubbish because it doesn't have DC.  I'm glad that there are options for people in different situations.

...DC charging was actually a turn off for me.  I live in an area where there are 3 DC stations in a 100 mile radius...
I hate to sound like Don, but there are no vehicles currently that can charge DC but not AC.  An Energica can charge from a J-plug, too.  At the same rate as a 'standard' SR/F does.
