3 words: DON'T DO IT.

There's nothing in the manual that says you have to use 220 or 240 volts, and the dealer never said anything about it, so I always just charged with the 110/120V in our garage.  Even after my wife raised the alarm one day about the smell of burning plastic, I still kept using 110/120.  However, I replaced the spade connector with the most robust spade that the local electronics store could find (ie, the same as the stock item).  But the male Zero plug still got extremely hot (ie, my finger starting to burn after a second or two), so I tended not to charge until the battery got low, and I checked the condition of charge every hour or so until the battery was fully charged.  And my wife kept nagging me about the possibility of burning down the garage.

And one day, after limping home with only one bar on the speedo, I noticed that the bike no longer was able to charge up to 11 bars.  Now it was only 8 bars maximum.  (I did a whole 'nother thread on that, with the title "how bad is my battery").

Suffice it to say that I eventually got a 240v system installed in the garage by an accredited electrician.  I didn't bother to get a wall outlet done, but instead just soldered the wires to the female plug end of the original Zero cord.  I did, however, get the electrician to install a robust switch for the cord, so that any sparking during the on/offs occurred at the new switch, instead of at the bike plug.  And the whole thing cost me less than $200.  I only wish I had done it when I originally purchased the bike.

Now, not only does the plug on the bike remain totally cool, but I've also found that the balancing function (p. 6.4 of the manual) on the BMS actually works.  In fact, the majority of the work done to get back to 11 bars from 8 was done merely by leaving the bike plugged into 240v for about a week steady.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / charging cord for 240v

Possibly a dumb question, but if I go to a 240v system in my garage, can I simply splice a 240v plug on to the plug that goes to the charge port on the Zero?  Also, can I use the same gauge wire that a typical computer uses?  I'm assuming that 240v has less amperage, and thus the spade connection at the bike end will heat up less (but maybe I'm totally wrong on that).

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / How bad is my battery?
« on: May 16, 2020, 07:58:33 AM »
My 2013 only gets used in the summer months, so in the winter, it has been stored in a somewhat heated garage (perhaps down to freezing at times), and charged every 90 days or so (as per the manual).  But I've noticed that now it will only charge up to 8 bars on the speedo indicator (or the single red and double green lights on the battery indicators). I can leave it charging (via 110 volts), but at some point, it just wants to go to the "unbalanced" indicator (the 3 alternating flashing green lights).  Is the battery on its way out?  (The bike still seems just as responsive as it ever was).

Thanks in advance for any info.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Anything better than spade connectors?
« on: August 31, 2019, 09:55:09 AM »
I've replaced mine once already with the most robust ones I could find.  But they still get quite hot.  I can put my finger on the connection, but that's it. Any longer, and I'm sure I'd burn my finger.  The cord and wire going each way are fairly warm, but nothing like the heat of the spade connector area.  I'm just afraid that I'll burn the garage down or something.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / After-market triple clamp?
« on: August 31, 2018, 08:00:37 AM »
Has anyone tried one?  I need to get a clamp that has the bolt brackets facing rearwards, instead of frontwards (like the stock clamp for the 2013), since I need to install clip-on handlebars with risers (the risers interfere with the bolt brackets).

Thanks in advance.

Electric Motorcycle News / Lead article on EV's in today's Globe and Mail

3.5 pages on EV stuff in the Business section.  Seems very balanced, and well worth a read.  It's behind a paywall, but I get the paper copy delivered every Saturday morning.

Stunned to learn that several US states actually penalize EV buyers because they won't be paying gasoline taxes.

General Discussion / Do you have a favorite helmet?
« on: February 03, 2018, 10:31:14 AM »
I've owned maybe 6 or 8 helmets over the last 40 years, but I like the Davida Jet the best.  Very quiet, especially with a bubble shield attached (even more-so than any full-face I've had).  Also, on very cold mornings, there is less of a tendency for the shield to fog up, compared to the full-face helmet that I used to wear. Finally, I find that it's the only helmet I've ever had that I have purposely not kept in the garage. It's just too beautiful.  I fondle that thing when I'm having my morning tea and watching TCM on the PVR, just like it was a Hasselblad or a Leica.

On a negative, it's leather lined, so it gets a tad hot in the summer.  For the warmer days, I take the bubble off, and use Leon Jeantet goggles (they're specifically made for the Davida helmets). I don't do a lot of highway riding, so I don't have to worry about a June Bug ruining my day.

On another negative, the Davidas are fairly expensive.

I know; the open-face helmets are not nearly as safe as full-faces.  And I should know better, since the only accident I've ever been in left a scar on my chin (even with a full-face).  But I'm a shallow aesthete, and I'm not likely to change any time soon.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Cord smoking
« on: September 27, 2017, 10:28:27 AM »
luckily, my wife pestered me about a weird smell in the garage.  Any thoughts on what might be the cause?  It is the 15 amp cord supplied by Zero, which has been working just fine for the last 18 months or so.  The 110 voltage in the garage has never caused a problem.  Normally, the cord gets a bit warm, but never this.  The plug's dust cover on the bike is always used, and the garage is not especially dusty.  Should I be cleaning the female end of the cord with a pipe cleaner and rubbing alcohol occasionally?

I've ordered another 15 amp cord from amazon (couldn't find a 12 amp one anywhere), but now I'm really nervous about plugging the bike in.

(I guess this fits in with "other EV's")

There was one on display at Calgary City Hall last week.  I didn't really have time to kick the tires, but from what I saw, it was a very solid little unit.

Parts, Mods And Hacks / Poor man's (and woman's) fiberglass
« on: May 15, 2017, 08:16:40 AM »
I tried various methods of making cooling vents for my 2013 Zero S (I adapted a Airtech fairing, so the original venting had to go).  I first tried utilizing some 1" x 4"'s and some 1/8" 3-ply plywood.  That didn't work.  then I went for the same, but substituting in some vinyl.  That worked...sort of.  Then I tried fiberglass.  That didn't work...mainly because it was the first (and last) time I'd ever played around with the stuff.  Then I searched on line for paper mache techniques.  I found a method which uses white glue, drywall paste, and the blue shop rags that are sold in hardware stores and look like rolls of paper towel.  Unlike fiberglass, I could use this stuff indoors and with bare hands.  Just like playing around with porridge.  The photo below shows half of a 20 pound dumb-bell resting on a paper mache vent that is about 3/16" thick, and with an average of 3 plies of the blue shop rag.  I'm sure it could have supported twice or three times the weight, but I didn't want to tempt fate.

The foam off to the right is the form I used (carved from styrofoam that I got from Michael's craft store...with a saran wrap covering not shown).  The vent obviously looks like crap, but it's not the material's fault.  I pulled it off the form too early, and like cake in the oven, it sank.  I also didn't take a lot of care laying down the strips of fabric.  My next attempt will look a lot better.

Here is the link for the method (about 1/3 of the way down the page under "joint compound").  I found that a mix using about the same amount of water and joint compound works well for consistency.  http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-recipes

Of course, the material isn't waterproof, so I had to paint it and then add a coat or two of varathane.

Does anyone know if one exists?  Or is there a listing of local clubs anywhere?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Cold weather experiment
« on: October 30, 2016, 02:03:24 AM »
The cold is obviously easier to deal with when wearing mitts (versus gloves).  So today (just above freezing this morning), I went out to do my errands with the bike in eco (versus sport, which I'm otherwise always in).  The other part of the equation is that mitts aren't very conducive to grabbing levers (whether clutch or front brake).  So I wondered if the regenerative braking, along with the rear brake, might be enough for slowing down.

And it works just fine.  Only once did I find myself with the mitted hand unconsciously hovering over the front brake lever -- which is a good thing, since in an emergency, I'd want the front brake in a millisecond.

I know that the manual states that this is a no-no, but I'm wondering just how detrimental it is to the bike. Anyone know?  (It sure would be handy to be able to do it with a clear conscience in a parking lot.)

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Zero adhesive sticker?
« on: August 14, 2016, 08:57:18 AM »
Does such a thing exist?  Quite often, I'll come back into the parking lot and see someone eyeing my bike. I'm only too happy to tell them about it, but what about the folks who have already gone their way?  How would they know what the bike is?  (I've taken off the fake tank and put on a fairing, so there aren't many clues for the untrained eye).

If there are no stickers, is there at least a good quality jpeg of the 4-circle image, so that I can get something professionally done to slap on my fairing?
