Dirt Rider Quantya Track Review
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:56:43 PM »

Very good review overall.  Rear shock and tires were the biggest gripes.  They did a good job reviewing it for what it is and the doors it will open to people.

DR mentions Quantya does not like to run full knobbies on the bikes because it puts a lot of strain on the motor.  First time I have heard that.

Forgot to mention they had a hard time getting used to the freewheel effect of the motor.  It sounds like when you decelerate and get back on the power the engine has to spool up to the speed of the chain.  Interesting.

It must have a sprag (sp) clutch in it or something.  I wish the websites would have a little more information on them.  For the price of these little buggers, it would be nice to have as much information as possible.  I guess it's proprietary information.

No clutch,  the motor when no electricty is added spins free just the friction from the brushes.

but with an electric bike the motor has to 'spool up' to get back to deliver drive. It's like riding a bicycle downhill and taking your feet off the pedals. To get back to delivering power you have to spin the pedals back up to 'catch up with yourself.'

So if there is no clutch or true freewheel, do the magnetic forces have a lag time to build when the throttle is applied?

On the Dirt Rider Forum Quantya thread I asked...

1) A few of us on Electric Motorcycle Forum have been trying to figure out this "freewheel effect" mentioned in the DR review and what causes it.  Is it something built into the drivetrain of the Quantya or is it the nature of the electric motor to behave this way?

Answer:
This is the nature of the Electric Motors. Unlike gas motors that have compression to slow the bikes down electric does not have compression.  The only way to really get any type of “engine brake” would to have the motor do regeneration! At this point there are issues with that due to weight. They can do this on heavier vehicles like cars because of the weight that allows the vehicle to sill move forward without locking up the wheels. It’s the reverse polarity that would slow the motor down and recharge the motor at the same time. If you try to back one of our bikes up its much more difficult because the polarity on the motor has changed!  That is the only way to get rid of the free wheel. This is something that will come in the future as things progress.
