Home Brew / Custom Eltek Quad charger 8500W
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:05:45 PM »
Hi all,

Just becourse I can put my hands on another 8 of these power hungry, super small, high efficiency FlatPacks I want to investigate if I can make two European Zero owners very happy with another set of my custom build FlatPack based Quad Super Chargers solution.

Are you traveling long distances and want to recharge fast? Than this is probably an affordable charging solution €/w.

I build several of these config's last year and customers are very happy with it still. A few in Holland and a few in Germany right now.

The chargers are fully operational and tested when delivered. They will come with a 3 Phase Type-2 plug, a brown Anderson plug and a C13 cable for the onboard.

Phase's:
Ph1: Onboard
Ph2: 2 x FP1800 48V
Ph3: 2 x FP1800 48V

Total power 1300 + 7200 = 8500W  8)

Dimensions are (hxbxd) 9,3x14,5x28cm

Price is €2500 incl. shipping in Europe, invoices are possible.

Power draw is more than 16A on each phase, so 22kW chargingstations like the one's at FastNed are a must. If you try a 11kW station, it will disconnect after 20 sec's..

Please mail me if you are interested or have questions.

Pics are attached..

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Smoked the C14 Power inlet
« on: July 18, 2017, 08:12:01 PM »
Today my DS2014 stopped charging in my garage around 54%. After some investigation I found the back side of the C14 power inlet completely melted on one pole.
I noticed earlier that my power cord was getting unusually warm on the plug side. I noticed it already when I bought the bike, but it always worked and only the last two months I had to replace the powercord becourse of a bit melted plug.

I took everything apart, and cleaned the melted wire, shortened it a bit and soldered it direct to the pole of the chasis part. Then I applied some heat shrink around it like it was original.

Seemed that the Amp connector wasn't crimped well on the wire in the factory..

Still amazing that this simple heat shrink managed to withstand all rain showers I drove in lately  8) The chassis part of this connector is just a €1 piece at the local electronic shop..

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Type2 plug mod
« on: May 16, 2017, 11:05:06 PM »
I encounter a problem when using my Dual Flatpack charger on a female cable type2 plug. My current charger has a male Type2 cable connector.
Here in the Netherlands the female cable connectors can be found on for example the FastNed stations along the highway.

When one put a standard male cable plug into a female cable plug, it won't accept it all the way. Just the phases are connected, but just. Not the CC and CP connections are connected. Also when one makes a adapter from shuco (or e.g. CEE32A) to a female type2, the male part is not accepted all the way. It works, but the contacts are not fully connected and it feels fragile like it can fall apart any moment. They can disconnect very easy.

When you cut off 10mm off the male plug, all is fine. Contacts of all phases are good and Cc and Cp are also connected. Once connected they feel much more solid and they disconnect not easy anymore.
The only drawback is that one loses the locking mechanism when in use on a chassis type2 station.

Originally:

Cuted the male part and sanded it smooth

Connected!

Charging at FastNed

Looking good :-)

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Foglight project on my DS '14
« on: March 05, 2017, 03:28:57 AM »
Just wanted to share my little foglights project. Since I recently moved to a somewhat more country-ish area, I just needed more light from the bike when rideing the last 10km of my daily trip on small roads in the woods.

I was first thinking of the Givi's S320, but they are quite expensive and not black. I liked the oval lens very much, wich creates a nice horizontal flat beam instead of just a round column of light. But these oval's seem hard to find. The other option was a BMW copy slash China verion with oval lens:

http://www.ebay.nl/itm/2x-Cree-LED-Fog-Light-Auxiliary-Driving-Lamp-for-BMW-K1600-R1200GS-ADV-F800GS-/322218061183?hash=item4b05b16d7f:g:E4gAAOSwa~BYWf5C

So I ordered the china versions and when received, hooked them up to the 12V aux. Not surprisingly the bad quality led driver caused so much HF interference that the whole bike was in error. After some experiments on the 12V line, which where not that succesfull, I decided to open the lights and have a look on the onboard driver. To my surprise it looked not that bad, but a capacitor of any serious value was clearly missing to decouple the 12V supply line. After adding a simple 10uF 50V capacitor straight behind the first diodes (protection against reverse polarity I think) all was good! How can they save a 1 cent part to increase the product quality so easily?

After having all this working I let a local metal worker make two small pipe's out of aluminium to mount the lights on. See the drawing below. The lights are mounted on this small aluminium pole which is screwed down to an existing M5 location wich is there to hold the bodywork in place.

I will post some nightly pic's when I'm on the road again and some more detailed pic's of the setup when it stops raining.. The light beam is very low, powerfull and in a nice horizontal lightpattern, wich clearly lits any sign on 50 meters ahead. Very nice. The lights are about 6000K, so I have to change the headlights also  8)

This rain brings me to another point. When removing the tank plastic I was a bit shocked by the situation of the connectors underneath. In winter they use a lot of salt on the roads here in Holland and this has a huge impact on the wiring and especially the clear exposed SAE connector wich was completely green of oxidation. :o
I disconnected all plugs, rinsed them off carefully to remove as much of the salt a possible and dried them with a hairdryer. After all this I putted all connectors into shrink tube and tied the ends with tie-wraps to make it as tight as possible. I hope this is now really european weather style proof!

EDIT: After riding for a while with these protected connectors all chassis isolation faults are gone. No flashing red triangle anymore while in moisture or heavy rain.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / System indicator warnings
« on: December 27, 2016, 02:05:43 PM »
A few days ago I saw suddenly the red system indicator flashing very quickly several times on my ride back home. When I managed to find a parking place and wanted to take a video of it it stopped flashing. When I was back on the highway it was all fine. It's hard to tell if it was the first time, because I never look much down on the dash while riding.. and it's not that bright.
Next day it appeared again, and now the green ignition light in the middle also flashed slowly together with a very quick flashing system indicator. I did try to count the quick flashes, but it was very hard to tell if it was 3-3 or 4-4 or 3-4 etc. when I stopped and again wanted to take a video it all went back to normal again. It didn't appear later on my ride.
Bike is behaving normally tough, also when I continue driving with all flashing indicators. What to do, has anyone experience with this?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / DS tyres and roll resistance
« on: October 09, 2016, 03:41:42 PM »
Dear community,
I'm looking into new tyres for my 2014DS. Before winter kicks in I want to have new rubbers on the bike. Now the original Kenda tyres (130/80-17 and 100/90-19) are more or les done, and I'm looking into this matter.
Last year I did an investigation for my Honda Insight car and found out that choosing fuel efficiency tyres makes a huge differnce concerning roll resistance and range. Where normal tyre's gave me a 1/15 (Liter/kilometer) consumption with these new these tyres its an average of 1/21! So in this extend I'm looking now for the bike. How are experiences here on the forum, anyone suggestions, anyone saw improvements/deterioration after a tyre swap? The dealer suggested to go for the Michelin anakee's, but could't tell anything about rollresistance. I'm riding always on higway/local roads and never go off road. So I don't need much tyre thead in this perspective.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 2014DS won't keep it's clock
« on: August 27, 2016, 08:31:30 PM »
My 2014 DS won't remember it's time since I got it (2 weeks ago). It was a showroom model and therefore maybe not programmed.. Each time it's charge state reaches 100% it resets it's clock to 0:00. Or it seems related to the charge state. On a normal trip with some stops it keeps the right time on the clock. Even when the key is removed.
Edit: When I stop for longer than 2 hrs AND no power is connected, the clock will stop. And continue when I power up the bike again. After a stop more than 10hrs (long working day) and no power is connected the clock says 00:00 and has lost its time completely.
Can't find a solution in the manual. Anyone?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Charge tank for Zero DS 2014?
« on: July 14, 2016, 12:13:04 AM »
Hi everybody, I'm new here and I will introduce myself briefly. I am Wijnand and almost a Zero owner. I will receive my first Zero DS after the summer holidays. Its a second hand (2500km) and a dealer demo model with a 11.4 lithium battery. It looks really brand new :-)
I have rode a few years a electric scooter (45km/h) and loved the electric drive from the first mile. Now I go for a higher speed and bigger range. Being a electronics engineer myself I have been spending hours to read all topics on this forum to know and learn a lot of how this bike works. Because I'm gonna use my zero a lot on its range limit I started to investigate the use and availability of the charge tank and/or the DigiNow charger. But whats not completely clear to me is why the charge tank is only available on models from 2015 and later, and the power tank is available on 2014 models though... The dealer couldn't inform me about this. What is the difference in electronics from models 2013 and 2014?
