Advice for a budding electronic engineer

Well I'm being a bit dramatic, I'm a licensed mechanic with 20 years in the trade, I feel like I'm falling behind in understanding the electronic workings of the things that I repair (the trade has moved from repairing problems to replacement of components) I want to have a better understanding and am looking for a book to amuse me, I read in a post a while ago about a book that helps in understanding the electronic workings, can anyone recommend some reading material?

Amen, hosannah and hallelujah. I've been an EE for 31 years because I found the first edition of that book in my college days.

Yes very good book indeed.
Want to got hands-on experience? Buy a dirt-cheap moped with depleted batteries from craigslist and upgrade it with lithium cells.

That's the book I'm looking for! Nice light winter reading, I used to be a technician at a progressive shop that specialized in emission and electronic repairs but left to go to a municipality and have felt like my understanding of the technology is slipping
