Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Does your motor overheat at speed?
« on: October 13, 2015, 02:06:53 AM »
I am in the Bay Area myself and I regularly get the overheat warning on my 2014 Zero SR during the northbound climb on I-280 from (California 92 intersection to California 35 Skyline Blvd exit). Just doing highway speeds (75-80 mph), pretty much at any ambient temperature. This is a demanding climb at those speeds, so I am not very surprised.

I don't have a graph or anything like that. I collected this data by just looking at the amp reading on my kill-a-watt meter and by resetting fuses :)

3
From my experience, the QuiQ charger will initially draw up to 9.5 amps (110V) for an hour or two, then settle on around 7 amps. I was not able to charge my 2012 DS when I had both chargers on the same 15A circuit (I tried). 20A circuit was doing fine.

Zero SR onboard charger draws about 11.5 amps initially then it stabilizes at around 10.5. This trips the 20A circuit breaker if I connect both chargers at the same time.

Well, the 2014 manual says battery does not need a break in so I am not sure the break in applies here.

6000 on my 2012 DS
300 on my 2014 SR to date.

I got the SR too, and I do get the sound GNU is talking about. It seems to be changing with amperage being delivered to the motor, and yes, it only happens at a high acceleration throttle setting. I get it on ECO only if I start off with WOT. On Sport, I get it maybe with throttle open half way or more. The sound is like listening to an injured wookie crying.

Update on my cut-out problem. I dropped my 2012 DS ZF9 at the dealer just before Thanksgiving. They apparently shipped the bike to Zero and it came back yesterday. I also got a recall notice via certified mail (recall number: 13V-635, dated 1/15/14) for the cutout problem. Going to pick up my bike tomorrow and see how it performs.

Edited to add: it performed ok, no cutouts, but I decided to trade it in for a 2014 SR. OUCH, my wallet.

My DS ZF9 is #135. I did 5,000 miles last year but only a meager 1,000 this year since I got the glitch. I need to finally ride my bike to the service but I am not sure how to demonstrate the glitch to them.

Any updates from people having issues?

I noticed that my "glitch" happens when I walk the bike backwards (i.e. from a parking spot or garage) while the "ignition" is on. The bike then emits noises from the engine and starts having problems shortly thereafter.

For the last 2 weeks or so I have been careful to turn the bike off with the key if I had to back off somewhere and didn't have any recurrence of the "glitch". I have put about 400 miles on without a glitch. It might be a coincidence though, I am not sure.

So what's the preferred method dealing with this glitch? I am actually closer to Zero than to the dealer I bought the bike from. But I guess they would want me to go to the dealer anyway. Should I call Zero? The dealer? My worry is that by the time I get to the dealer the glitch will stop manifesting itself (it seems to happen at the beginning of a ride usually).

This is exactly what I am experiencing on my 2012 DS ZF9. I had both dead throttle and the power cutouts while moving. Reset cures it sometimes but only temporarily. The glitch has been happening with increasing frequency since about late February. I have 5700 miles on the bike now.

Last Friday it took me about 7 times to get the bike moving. Then I got the "thunk" and lost power in a tight curve and almost fell. Also, sometimes the throttle is completely dead and sometimes applying throttle while standing still will induce a slight *backwards* motion. Sunday, I lost power four times on the road and in fact, it has became so bad that I was wondering if I make it back home.

The bike is always fully charged and garaged, it was never in the rain. Heck, I didn't even wash it since new ;-)

Yup, sounds exactly like it. I will continue the discussion there, thanks for pointing the thread out.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Another glitch
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:31:28 AM »
My 2012 DS ZF9 has developed an annoying glitch. I feel and hear a little "thud" sound from the motor and all of the sudden all the power is lost. Applying throttle even causes a slowdown if moving; applying throttle while standing still will induce a slight *backwards* motion. The usual reset with the ignition key takes care of that glitch usually, however I needed to do that at least 7 times Friday to get moving :(

Saturday, I lost power while in a tight curve and almost fell.

Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?

ColoPaul, expevride, monarchhonda, mehve, protomech, rotoiti, trikester, RickSteeb - just to verify, all of you have had a cut out that only a key off/on would fix, correct?
Yes.

1) was it raining, or had the bike recently gotten wet?
No. My bike was never in the true rain. Some drizzle, yes, but not rain.

2) how many miles were on the bike when it first occurred?
About 2,000.

3) how many total times has it happened?
Just once. Took it to my dealer, they had a Zero tech onsite, they reprogrammed the controller. Never happened again.

4) have you only gone to twist the throttle and no power, or have you been riding, heard a "clunk" and have it cut off?
No clunks. About 70 mph on a highway, coasted for 30 seconds or so, twisted the throttle and nothing.

5) has anyone had the bike try to go backwards when twisting the throttle?
Not me.

6) have you ever had to unplug and replug for any reason the wiring harness going to the motor or move it's routing for any reason?
No.

7) Do any of you frequently switch between sport and Eco mode?
I do. I know the instructions say I have to turn off the "ignition" before switching but the switch seems to work regardless.

And the tires were installed today, no pictures though since the bike is now at the dealer, awaiting new charger installation.
