Fine! It's in only 2 weeks now, almost tomorrow. I'm the happy owner of a brand new stock charger mounted in the 2014 Zero S, therefore I will not worry about a sudden breakdown of it. Combined with the external quick charger made with Eltek modules, it should be quite easy to ride the about 250km from my home across the Black Forest to Stuttgart.

Hello Christian,

I'm planning to join from Elsass, and also another guy from Paris. Still have to clear some issues like WAF, b without b, and charging points en route.

AFAIK it is not permitted in Germany to do group rides of more than 3 motorbikes. A "good" reason for so many riders to cross the border and make noise and smoke in the Vosges mountains in France!

So it means that you may have to request a special authorization from the local police? With the route&timing, and, who knows, the personal details of each rider? Or am I wrong?

Hello, that's exacltly what I fear will happen to me sooner or later. My charger stops between 92 and 95%, but I can get it up 100% with an external charger plugged at the same time. Thinking of an upgraded solution by diginow or so.

Yes, aux beams is a good solution. The headlight gets hot, and is made of plastic. The reflector may suffer from heat and become "unsharp", making the beam "blurry" and eventually less powerful.

That is all the difference between physics and daily life. It would be logical to have an electric energy bill in MJ. It's already somehow logic that the natural gas bill (for those who are connected to a gas grid) is expressed in kWh and not in cubic meters (or feet3 or inches3 or USgallons or imperial pints or whatsoever), despite the gas counter really measuring a volume.

The general public likes not to be bothered by anything but their ordinary knowledge.

Why does a "motor" have to be electric, whereas an "engine" is considered as internal combustion (or external in older days of marine and railway)?

Why does a power in kW mean "it's electric", whereas a power expressed in "hp" means "its on fuel"? Why not on living horses...

Mankind is a troublesome species.

The real Wh are an integral sum of the instant V*A*dt (dt means mathematical short time increment), therefore the chemistry's discharge voltage curve has an influence on it. And also the discharge rate, ambiant temperature etc.

What is really false is multiplying the Ah by the max voltage (when fully charged). And this is exaxtly what Zero does when advertising a model's capacity.

Yes, battery swap may work only if you are not the owner of the battery. Neither the vehicle, maybe. Therefore it "could" work with a fleet of identical EV's and batteries owned by an operator, where you rent the mobility service. But, as said, there have already been some failures in the business model.

Do the dealers decide themselves if they want to selle it or not? Or does H-D H/Q decide who is entitled to and who not? Because selling and maintaining the LW also means special training, special tools etc... Which cannot we widespread as long as sales remain in the early stages.

How can you watch your watch while riding? Especially in winter....

I have 10+ years old 18650 cells recovered from scrapped laptop packs, some of them have not been used nor charged during that decade (after a charge-discharge test cycle in 2008). Mostly stored in a non-heated garage, mild in summer and cold in winter. They are around 3.3V and hardly lost any voltage. Still well usable although I did not recently perform a capacity test.

Or move the whole Zero inside the house.  ;D At least it will not leave dirty oil stains on the floor.

General Discussion / Re: How often do you see other electric bikes?

I have never seen another Zero in the wild. However I have had several people comment on or ask about my bike, so that's fun!

In the triangle region of NC.

Here in Alsace (East "coast" of France), same experience as BenderEmf....

Yes! In fact the "flat power curve" of an EV is not really related to the motor. It is rather the power handling ability of the battery. Somehow the power (or torque...) will be limited via software by the motor controller in order not to exceed battery's maximum amps rating and also not to get overheated or undervolted or so.

What torque is it? On motor shaft or on the wheel?

The guys always chatting about engine torque make me smile, because the effect depends on the transmission ratio. Even the torque at the wheel end has to be divided by the wheel radius to get the thrust. In fact, the only significant figure for "performance" is the thrust you get from the powertrain. Simply expressed in Newtons. Or (old)tons!

Thrust is the parameter you can drive an acceleration from. Same as with rockets.

It's now 2 years almost that I started the Zero adventure with a second hand '14S. I added about 11kkm so it's about 10kmiles old now. No issues except the charger fading slowly away, no idea how it will end.

One year ago I had a crash at slow speed caused by a blind car driver, with some body damage, well repaired now, and minor Zero damage (windscreen, blinker, handelbar, mirror broken front fork skewed) The plastic fairing parts were more or less broken but could be glued together. Everything else could also be repaired at reasonable cost, all by myself.

It's still a pleasure riding a Zero, even during wintertime, as long as the roads are not icy.
