What's the deal with the torx screws on this throttle assembly?  There is a peg in the torx insertion point that prevents use of a standard torx wrench, so it appears you must use a custom, hollowed out shaft torx tool for this.

Has anyone else run into this?

Is this a standard tool I can find at a hardware store, or a proprietary tool that's going to take another 2-3 weeks to arrive at my Zero dealer?

My gf got impatient and flat-track-lowsided my 2018 SR, (happily not hurt), and everything else appears pretty standard, just this

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Maximizing Battery Service Life
« on: September 12, 2019, 11:01:24 PM »
I've found some scatterings in here on this and gleaned some excellent information, but still have a few questions. If I missed the thread or link, I'd appreciate a hotlink. (Perhaps these threads deserve stickying?)
Please do not respond with "Just ride it, enjoy yourself, and it will last you long enough." I tend to develop emotional attachments to my steeds over time and usually get 100K+ out of them, and do not trade them in every 1.5-2 years. I perform my own oil changes, valve adjustments, replace my own chains, and keep a detailed maintenance log, which only exacerbates this irrational attachment (I prefer to call it Mechanical Empathy.)   To my questions:

~Does the temperature gauge on my '18 Zero SR with EV charge tank show the battery temp or the motor temp?

~To maximize battery life, what's a good ceiling temp?  Sometimes I ride sustained freeway speeds (80+mph here in CA) and the temp gets above 160F. I've seen NewZeroland's footage when he started having trouble when his temp got above 215.

~If the temp is hot from a freeway jaunt, would it be beneficial to let it cool before plugging it in?

~Will torque launches (presumably faster, hotter discharges) shorten useful battery life?

And for those who are searching, like me, I found this thread most illuminating:  Slow charging vs. Fast Charging.  Turns out keeping it charged to 100% and always ready is worse for the battery life than temps.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge! Safe riding out there.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Let's See Some Pics!
« on: February 09, 2018, 01:36:50 AM »
I'm especially looking forward to seeing if anyone has done any custom painting of their bike, but let's see them pics of your bikes.
I've ordered the red bodywork for my '18 SR, and am trying to figure out what color (or pattern) to paint the stock white panels. Suggestions welcome.
In your garage, on the side of a beautiful road, with your girlfriend on it... Let's see 'em!

When plugging in the charge tank, should the dash respond the same as it does when you plug into a standard household outlet?

Do you have to download a Volta app or something?

The free Volta EV charging station across the street didn't work when I plugged it into my chargetank.

Sorry if this has been covered in another thread, but our search function will not let me search for "volta" alone--shows everything with "voltage" as well.

Am going to be irresponsible again tonight and take her for a spin on the coast.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Restored to Life!
« on: January 28, 2018, 06:32:17 AM »
Glad to see the forum's back up, I was afraid I'd been banned or something.

Also restored to life because I (irresponsibly) went out for a ride in the beautiful 70-degree temps on Pacific Coast Highway, despite having a broken femur and rib. SO wonderful! Just a quick little 60 miles to see the world again.

My bike's belt seems a little noisier than demo bike's a rode two months ago, but I'll check it with the Crikit. Such a fun bike! Was a little worried about riding with the busted hip/leg, but this bike is pretty much like a 70mph Rascal scooter and I was able to run errands, call on friends, and spend a few hours away from my workstation or in bed watching dreck on Netflix.

So glad the forum's back up (and that I'm not banned), and that soon I'll be able to ride this bitchin bike to work every day! And to the beach, and to Palomar Mountain, and Elfin Forest, and Highland Valley Road...

Hunger is better than the best French chef for lending savor to a dish, but this day was keenly beautiful. Hope you guys & gals are all having as magical a weekend as this!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / ELI5: J1772 Instead of a Printer Cord?
« on: January 17, 2018, 01:21:51 PM »
Wouldn't it make more sense to provide the Zero line with a J1772 charge where the current charge port is? And then provide an external adapter with the bike that can be plugged into that?

I'm still waiting on my 2018 SR with both the standard charger, and with the tank charger, which seems silly to carry around, wasting energy to accelerate, carry, and decelerate. I'm no electrical engineer, and am new 'round these parts.  ELI5 = Explain Like I'm 5 years old.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Doing the Numbers: Fuel Cost Per Mile
« on: January 04, 2018, 02:44:37 AM »
2018 SR vs. BMW F800GT

2018 SR without Powertank, according to Zero's site
Range                    112 miles (hwy)     223 miles (city)
Cost to Recharge     $1.61                   $1.61
Cost per mile       $0.0144               $0.0072

2015 F800GT (been averaging 48mpg city & hwy combined)
Range                    192 miles (city)
4 gallons @ $3.20     $12.80
Cost per mile        $0.0667

That coupled with the free charging station across the street from my house, this bike should pay for itself pretty quickly.

Street / Let's See Your ICE Bikes
« on: December 28, 2017, 02:43:31 AM »
I'm still keeping my ICE bikes when my SR comes in next week. Who else still has em and what have you got?

'15 BMW F800GT. Got it mostly for my GF. She's been on two multi-day trips with me up to the Sierras, and had a tip-over on Caliente-Bodfish Road, just north of Tehachapi.

'02 Kawasaki ZX9R. Last of the carbureted bikes. Still doesn't burn a drop of oil and gets ~45mpg despite having 88,000 miles on the clock. Was in my early 30s when I got this bike, and I'm nearly 50 now. Have ridden it from San Diego to Philadelphia and back.

Zed's big day finally arrived.

'00 W650. Bike was about as popular in the US as carbonated milk when they were introduced here, but I liked it ever better than Triumph's Bonneville, and still dearly love this bike.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Color Swaps
« on: December 14, 2017, 05:44:29 AM »
Thanks to the Zero SR only having 3 non-black colored, pieces, it's remarkably easy to change the color of your bike and not that expensive.

Just got the following quote for the painted 2016 plastic, which will fit my 2018 SR with the charge tank:

Charge Tank Cover SR Red:   $233.75
Front Fender SR Red:           $46.75
Tail Upper SR Red:               $63.75

Admittedly, I might have gotten a nice discount on these, as I'm paying for them at the same time I'm paying for the whole bike, but I figure these will pay for themselves after my next bank job getaway this Spring.

Be fun to change them up as seasons or whim dictate, or maybe even mix it up to achieve that wonderful '98 R1 look.

In the Zero SR app, is it possible to disable the Sport and Custom modes? I have a dirt-biking nephew and it might create friction in the family if I tell him flat-out no to letting him take it for a spin, and I'd prefer he thinks the bike is a wimp to him cartwheeling the bike (and perhaps also himself) down the road.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Eco-Mode vs. Self-Restraint
« on: December 06, 2017, 03:39:53 AM »
Is it possible to get the same efficiency and range in Sport Mode by taking it easy on the go-stick?

I ask because in SoCal traffic can really fluctuate. On our test ride, I was on the freeway in Eco mode, topped out at 70 in the slow lane with a car a few yards behind me. I couldn't close the throttle to make the jump to lightspeed from Eco mode, so I just had to tuck, hold the throttle wide-open and pray.

And for those of you who've done some research or testing on the subject, how do you have your custom settings and why? Or is there another thread where everyone's already revealed their custom settings?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Higher Speed Gearing Option
« on: December 05, 2017, 11:41:34 PM »
Sorry if this is old hat, but has anyone tried Zero's higher speed gearing option?

Not looking to go faster than 102, but I wouldn't mind trading a little torque for some range. I upgeared my beloved '02 ZX9R and the bike still pulls like a peach, and can get nearly 50mpg on road trips, and it actually made the speedometer more accurate as well.

I notice they're offering it for the S & DS models. Is there a reason it's not offered for the SR? Since the platform is identical, it should still bolt directly on, yes?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Noob Questions
« on: November 30, 2017, 10:53:20 PM »
Sorry if this is addressed elsewhere, but I couldn't find an FAQ pertaining to the Zero SR.

~Who's got the most miles on their zero? Any issues?
~Can the SR be charged at all EV charging stations?
~What's the difference between the charge tank and the power tank? Power tank = no charging at EV stations?
~Typical service life of the belt drive?
~Anyone mount soft saddlebags (Tourmaster Cortech, for example) on their SR?
~Any tankbags that will work on the bike? (Asking for my dog who'll continue commuting to work with me every day.)
~How many miles are you typically getting on rear tires with that monstrous torque hit?
~Have any of you gone on any multi-day motorcycle trips? Charge in hotel rooms? EV charging stations?

I'm a life-long rider with over a quarter million miles behind me and am really excited to take the SR for a test ride this weekend!
Thanks for any guidance or links.
