Title: FXS 6.5 2017 model compared to 2016
Post by: Olbom on December 15, 2016, 02:05:55 PM
Hello,

I will surely buy soon my first Zero motorcycle, to get rid of my old 1200 GS ... to commute within Paris (France) and its suburbs.
Riding tests of DSR and FXS were astonishing, but I really prefer the FXS fun for city rides.

I get the opportunity to purchase now a "demo" version of FSX 6.5 (2016 model), but heard that the 2017 models are nicer, and maybe lighter as well ?

Where can I find a true information on respective weights, for this specific model ? (Surprisingly, in the 2017 electric bike chart published in another post, the FXS 3.3 weights 174Kg, the FXS 6.5 (more batteries) is 43kg less ... )

Best, Olivier

I don't think there's a huge difference between the two. The 2017 has slightly more torque but geared up a little so you probably won't feel it. (An odd choice when top speed is unlikely to be a selling point of this model.) The belt is wider. The firmware should be user upgradeable.

It's very much down to personal preference and how much that discounted demo is.

I'm also after a FXS. The 2017s will be £1500 cheaper in the UK due to a new subsidy so there is unlikely to be any great 2016 demo deals, but I'll ask.

Thanks Fred for the fast reply.

Same news here : French administration announced 1000 € subsidy, starting January 2017 ...

I'll ask the vendor in a few hours : If demo model is attractive enough, I'll be happy to get it. Torque is already very impressive, and this specific model can be driven simply with a "car driving licence", very nice news for my family. I am the only one having a "motorbike driving licence".

Hey Olivier,

why don't you look on the obvious, Zero's Website? Where else would you find more precise information? There are detailed spec sheets for every model of MY17 and even for all MY16.

2016 FXS: http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/fr/zero-fxs-specs-2016 (http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/fr/zero-fxs-specs-2016)
2017 FXS: http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/fr/zero-fxs-specs (http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/fr/zero-fxs-specs)

As you can see the weight didn't change at all, a ZF 6.5 is still 133 kg, the ZF 3.3 was just 114 kg. I don't where you got the other numbers from.

Apart from the belt, controller, faster MBB&BMS and the non-modular option there were no changes made to the bike.

Bought a 2016 FXS demo bike last week myself, pretty good opportunity, I had to do it.

Hi Lenny,

thanks for your nice info compilation. on http://cleanrider.com/2017-electric-motorcycle-catalog/ (http://cleanrider.com/2017-electric-motorcycle-catalog/) first board : FXS 3.3 is weighted 174Kg !

133Kg for such a torque is really impressive ! I got everything I need now, including a nice offer (GS buy-out) from the vendor ... I think I will go for it as well !

Best, Olivier

Not sure about the FXS but I test rode the 16 FX and then bought a 17 FX. The lower gearing does make a small difference. On the 16, the front wheel would lift very easily. On the 17, I find that it takes more deliberate effort to lift.

Hello guys,

I made the deal (nice buy back of my BMW GS) and will jump on my FXS by next saturday morning. My wife will be able to drive it as well.
We offered ourselves a very nice (and clean !) Christmas.

Thanks for all your advices.

Congrats on the purchase.  FXS is a very fun bike to ride.  Keep in mind that you can use the custom setting to reduce the torque to make it more tame if your wife is an inexperienced rider.

I was at my dealer's yesterday, they had a '17 FXS... the new HTD belt looks great!  By eye, it looks about 16mm wide, 8mm pitch as before, and noticeably thicker in the vertical dimension too.  It had quite a bit less side-to-side flex than the previous 14mm belt, which was good to see.

That's the most useful feature for me, in the new 2017 FX model. Wonder if the new belt can take some off road abuse without giving up, making the chain kit unnecesary..

Close. Not bad for eyeballin' it.

2014 Zero S 14mm width 8mm pitch
2017 Zero SR 17mm width 11mm pitch

Also, notice the difference in belt construction that you can see from the side view.

Thanks for those measurements & pics.  It's definitely a much heavier-duty belt than the previous 14mm-wide one.

Oded - I haven't found any specs on it yet, but I believe this belt is certainly strong enough to withstand the FX's spin-and-grab load spikes; you'll still want to protect it from pulling anything into the belt/sprocket junction, of course.  The '17 FX OEM pulley gearing is a quite a bit taller than the '13-'16 FX's - 4.5:1 vs 5.28:1, @ 15% higher - so IMO the 5.41:1 (non-"enhanced") '13-'16 chain kit is still looking pretty good torque-wise, and can be made even better.

I agree Ray, seems much more rugged, and therefor more suitable for my purposes. That's the most useful upgrade to the 2017 in my opinion..

Just got a 2016 "Demo" (had 36 miles on it!) for $1000 off at Stuart Motor Sports in FL.  Saw this post and was afraid I'd start having some early onset buyers remorse but I think for 10% off and getting the tax credit a year earlier it was the right move.  Plus I'm not doing any serious off roading - it's going to be mostly a commuter bike - so the "upgrades" on the 2017 probably wouldn't have changed my experience much.

I also went for a new 2016 FXS over a 2017. It seems that Zero had a few remaining at a £1500 discount. On top of the incoming £1500 UK grant that meant I couldn't resist any longer.  ;D

Hello,
just to say that I am having a lot of fun with my new toy : Some cars are chasing me, just after I "smoked" them, almost in silence, from the last traffic light ... Just electric power, guys ;-)

In france, there is an "administrative horse power tax" to pay when purchasing a new bike : 253€ for a "11HP" GS 1200 BMW, but only ... 2,76€ for a "2 HP" FXS motorcycle I ride.
