Title: 2013 S: Speedometer calibration settings
Post by: nekodan on January 15, 2014, 07:06:36 AM
I inadvertently entered into the "configuration" mode of my 2013 S (fat fingered trying to reset trip ODO).

I hit the wrong button and incremented the value on the first page. And then did the same on the second page. Doh!

Can anyone tell me what the numbers should be for the factory settings? Or, better yet, what the heck to the numbers mean? I'm guessing it calibrates the speedometer readings because it was definitely way off on my ride today.

Thanks!

My guess is that you hit the km/h vs. mph mode button.

I agree with that guess. I did that when riding a totally dark street at night when I first got my 2010 DS. I thought I was going 65mph when I was actually going 65 kph. I complained to Zero that the switch to select metric or English should be located somewhere out of the way so it couldn't be hit accidentally. This switch will probably be used once for most owners so it's stupid to have it so accessible and especially right next to the mode sw which will be used often.

They never took my advice.

I ended up chatting with a nice service representative at Zero.

Here are the values:

1972

28-132
2p

Okay, so which numbers adjust the speedometer reading? And, which way do you make the numbers go to make the speed more accurate?

While using a GPS app on my phone the other day, I noticed that my bikes speedo reads about 8% fast. For example: an indicated 100 km/h is actually 92km/h according to GPS. Anyone else notice this on their 2013 S?

My 2012 bike used the same instrument cluster and had the same amount of error.  My understanding is that it can be corrected by reprogramming the speedometer using a different code.  I used to have the procedure and code to alter the speedo reading but it went with my 2012 bike.  Somewhere on this board is a post from Harlan from about 18 months ago detailing how changes can be made.

For those interested, I found "1872" is a more accurate reading for the 2013 S speedometer

I'm interested, I have not tested with a GPS yet, I don't have any holder for it, I will need tape ;)

Is the procedure above working for the 2013 too?

My guess is that it should as the 2013 models seem to have the same instrument cluster as the 2012 bikes.

Yes - same procedure

Tested with a GPS, the odometer is only 4% over, it's a lot more acceptable then my DRZ which was 10%

Guys; heard recently that there is a reasonably common issue on these late model bikes which is causing a number of problems noted on the forums. Seems there is electrical noise interference which confuses signals and causes a number of faults. Zero were using Ferrite cores and now have a better solution (shielding kit) which sorts it out. Just a thought

My factory setting was 1972, so I'm wondering if 1772 would be in error the other way?

Yes. If I recall, I tried 1772 and then the reading was too slow

So, would changing the number to 1862 or 1871 make a change in smaller increments? Or, do these changes adjust something else?

You could do the change in smaller increments, but changing it by a value of 100 only changed the reading by about 3%. I didn't bother getting mine perfect, because if  it reads a little high it will prevent me from getting into (too much) trouble. My guess would be setting it to 1822 would be just about exact.

I have a speedo-healer on my Goldwing and have it set a nudge high so I won't speed in school zones.
