I still need to dig out from around the bike to see more of the frame. A Phase 1 hazmat team is coming next week to take away paint cans and burned lithium batteries, among other things, from our home and 39 others. After that I should be better able to see how it all looks.

Thanks, Burton. I think I have a good case for $11K+. I told them what condition it was in and they still insisted on a tow truck ::)

Ugh. OK, you made me buy a fire safe for my backups. I can't do offsite backups, but if I had a fire and they survived, I could deal with everything else being roasted.
Don't depend on a fire-proof safe. One of our friends had one and it burned up in this fire.
The lithium battery expanded almost the full length of the bike, accordion-style, or like the pages of a book. Insurance co. needed a photo, and next they want to come "with a tow-truck" for hard evidence of its demise.

Anyway, hopefully in a few months I'll be on a 2015 DS  :)

Dealer thinks it would be worth $11,000+ and KBB lists it at $10,495 from a dealer, so those numbers seem pretty sound.

Yes I did get a photo today, and I'll post it once I can download the photos from my camera. Looked like the battery expanded into an accordian-like stack of panels. I need to remove more metal roof material before I can get a clear image of what is what. Very sad.

I'm on the constant lookout for a 2013+ ds, check cycle trader online, about 75 zeros on there, a lot of them are 2015, but it should give you a good cross section for insurance

Great suggestion. Thanks. My dealer, Hollywood Electrics, thought $11-12K with low mileage.

The bike is way gone - a pile of ash, metal and melted plastic. Thanks for the estimate-I agree.

Does anybody know of any sales of used 2013 DS models, or how much they may have depreciated in 2 years? Tragically, my home burned down with my DS in the garage, with only 3500 miles and a windscreen. I'm just trying to see if I can find a value similar to what my insurance company will come up with. Thank you for any help. (I'll be happy to post the outcome here later if anyone is interested).

I agree with Justin Andrews.  Definitely go for the screen.

I'd highly recommend a Zero as a first bike. I bought the 2013 DS 11.4 last year as my first motorcycle, and I have loved every second I've been on it. I was pretty cautious at first with the throttle, and while traveling at highway speeds, but after you get used to it, it's not scary but still exciting. It can be easy to get going too fast in a hurry though, so watch the speedo! The bluetooth tweaking options are great for the novice rider too. Looks to me like you're making a good decision. Have fun!

I don't expect that Zero will allow owners to update Firmware.

When my 2012 was updated I watched the mechanic do some of it and it involved some special tooling, a lot of plastic coming off, and plugging special connectors into special places.

In the current form, there is likely too much risk for Zero to turn that over to owners.

With some engineering for future models it might be possible but I just hope that they get it to a stable working state and updates are not required.
I just talked to Ryan T at Zero and he said they are working on a remote fix for owners who live far away from dealers. They will ship out a cable set with a USB connection, and with a Remote 1-2-3 software download will be able to update the software after "mapping" the control board with the owner going through a series of steps with the throttle while the bike is on a jack. He said they plan to do get more cable sets and start working with those owners in a few weeks.

He also said that the quits-while-running problem seems to be occur repeatedly on some bikes and not at all on most, so if it hasn't happened yet, and chances are pretty good it won't.

Cheers, EastSider

Will you let us know how this turns out? I would like to opt for this method to update the software because my dealer is incompetent.

Yes I will! It may be a month or two.

I have the 2012 "Summer Screen" on my 12 DS and it improves range on the highway.   I have ridden the same route with and without it and get a little more range with the shield on.
I finally attached my windscreen and it definitely increases the highway speed comfort, and seems to help with range too. I'm loving it! Thanks all.

No regrets here either. My 2013 11.4 DS is the first bike I've owned, and I bought it solely because it is electric. No problems whatsoever. I had never considered buying an ICE bike because of maintenance hassles, noise, exhaust fumes, C emissions, etc. For where I live and ride, my DS is the perfect bike, charged from solar rooftop PV. I had to buy it so our rooftop solar would pay for itself sooner ;)

I am convinced that the Zero (Slipstreamer Spit-Fire) windshield on my 2012 Zero S contributes to the bike's range, compared with riding "naked".  I have ridden both with and without the windshield over the same route and the windshield really seems to help with both comfort and range.  Now I never take if off.   :)
I have the Dual Sport Screen (10-05723) on my Zero DS.  It definitely reduces the wind on my chest especially when I am in a tuck.  I believe it does help a little with range, but I have no hard data to prove it.  I like the look of it on the Zero DS the most.

It's my understanding that the Commuter Screen (p/n 10-05722), which extends higher, will do more to improve range.  Again, no hard data to prove it, but that was the general feedback from our test riders.

Please post your feedback on your findings.

aaronzeromoto

Great, thanks! Sounds like a worthy accessory.

Has anyone tried the new DS windscreen on their 2013 S or DS? If so, what was it like? I imagine it might increase range a tad by decreasing wind drag.
