I've posted a video of riding the technical "cactus trail" with my 2013 FX. The trail is on my SoCal desert property and can be tricky at times. Shows the good handling of the FX in tight trail riding.
Check it out: https://vimeo.com/83409323

Great stuff.
Nice camera also.

Thanks Trikster, but what do you need the rear view mirrors for during your cactus ride and how come those things are narrow where they show what is behind you and large where they show what is sitting on your shoulders? ;)
-
Thanks for the ride Trikester.... cold and icy up here so my FX is sitting in the office looking sad and dejected.
-
Thanks for sharing Trikester, stunning scenery. I wish I could spend a couple of years living in the states with all that open space to explore. My 'property' is a courtyard barely 20ft by 10ft.
I was also surprised that you leave the mirrors attached to the bike when off roading, removing them is simple and would save you a few quid in a crash. With all that cactus around i'd be wearing gloves too!
-
Thanks! That looks a lot better than 2' of snow and -10'F.

Don't tell anybody but I was riding in sandals also. A good incentive to do no dabs. ;)

Hey Trikester, I see that Zero Motorcycles posted your Video on their FB page as well. You are famous again.
-
Wow! Thanks for letting me know, I don't often go to their FB page.

Well, I used to view Zero's FB page without having to sign up for FB (I'm not on FB). This time I couldn't find a way to do that. Is there another way to access it? I thought commercial FB sites were openly shared without an FB account.

Hello Trikester, just a question: are you ridding with the CHAIN kit instead of the belt transmission ? I thought I can hear the noise of a chain while you are ridding. Nice desert by the way, love it. I spent 1 year in Goodyear-Phoenix area when I was younger and fall in love with the desert....
-
I converted to chain drive as soon as I got the bike. I don't trust belt drive in rocky dirt riding. One rock under the belt and you're walking home. Chain drive is much more resilient to rocks. Downside of course, it makes more noise and requires lubing.
Yes, it is nice desert. Yesterday I did a 10 mile hike in a wilderness canyon, in beautiful weather.

I need to edit up some of my GoPro footage of my off-road riding. I've taken the FX around motorcross tracks even and while I'm not exactly taking triples I've gotten my first ever several-feet-of-air on it. I even had the helmet cam on when I forgot to switch it off and accidentally chucked it down the trail and dinged the frame (less than a month into ownership.) Problem with GoPro is it is far too easy to make tens of GB of video which takes a lot of managing that I don't have time for.
Mostly I like the mid-speed stuff and technical single track. I bet I could make a battery last the whole day on the slow stuff exclusively but I tend to go through it by noon if I start at 8:00 with the mix I normally do, depending on traction. An hour of lunch charge does the trick with two QuiQ chargers and the onboard. (At least for now while the days are short.) I'm supposed to get my second set of batteries one of these months...
Gloves are good but the hand guards have saved me many a time! (And they show it.) The cacti add a new element, time for some Kevlar gear...

My riding isn't that serious. Since I'm going on 79 years I'm pretty cautious where and how I ride. I'll leave the power slides and catching air (and Kevlar gear) to the younger guys and gals. So my GoPro videos won't be any more exiting than this desert trail ride one I posted.

I hope that when I am 79 I will still be out riding around.

I hope you will be too.
We had a guy in our antique motorcycle club that still rode when he was 90. He even would bitch if we were riding too slow on our old machines.

I attended a BMW rally last year and there was a fellow at the rally who rode his BMW 600 miles to the rally. He was 93. However, he was saying his goodby to the rally attendees at the awards ceremony. He told us that it was getting too difficult for him to go that distance to the rally and would no longer be riding his BMW to the rally anymore. I imagine that I would have thrown in the towel long before that. ;)

An update report.
That annoying clicking sound heard on the video was due to a buckle on GoPro's chest harness. The hard plastic buckle is very close to the hard plastic camera mounting chest plate. With very slight movement, such as speaking, the buckle taps against the plate and the sound is transmitted directly through the plastic to the built in camera mic.
I have alerted GoPro to the problem, along with photos, and it has been passed along to their development dept. Hopefully they will correct the design for future buyers of the "Chesty" harness. I corrected the problem on my harness by placing padding between the buckle and the plate. I glued on a piece of thin foam rubber similar to wet suit material. See photo.
