Anaheim to Reno race results and accompanying article

That was a great report. It sounded like quite an adventure and one that worked out well for all of the riders.  :)

Nice writeup! Interesting mention of the DJ-RapidCharge system for dual J1772 on SR/F SR/S. I have not seen this mentioned previously at the Electric Motorcycle Forum.

Yeah that double J plug is a great idea.
Oh yeah I tried to get them to include it in Feb of 2020.
Quote form me:
"DC fast charging sounds good but for "now" a 12kw DOUBLE J (put it in there guys) charging option is about as good as you can get with these cells."

A $1500 option that is "sold out" that Zero could have cashed in on.   Oh well.

Very nice write up Morgan.  Maybe some other bikes join in next year.

The more the merrier! Just think how difficult this would have been even 5 years ago.

Ideally more people organize their own trips like this all over the world. I wanna see European versions with absurd titles like, "10 of us rode 900km to Spain for authentic paella on electric motorcycles. First to the restaurant won!"

I wonder how many get pissed when they need a charge and see a single EV hogging up both ports.


But I have done such quite a  few times myself to charge my SR at 8KW.  At least I won't be there all that long!

I think most Tesla destination chargers can do better than 12KW. That includes houses.


Be sure to turn on home charging in Plugshare if you want to charge at 12KW in the USA from a single J-1772 with a Tesla-Tap.  I ran into one guy who owns a Zero SR/S with a charge tank and he says he usually charges at the full 12 KW, and often from Tesla owners who list their residences on Plugshare. A good way to BS with other EV owners.


I have never used the on road home charging myself, but I have no need for 12KW charge stations with  my Zeros. I can usually get my 8 KW from hogging up two J-plugs to my external chargers.


BTW, I just now read the entire article by MV. Very interesting. I see I was even   mentioned there, below the photo of my Energica.

Don, Most Tesla destination chargers I have seen in Plugshare and used myself only charge at around 6kw. For home charging my Tesla I have a max of 10kw. That is because I am using a previously installed NEMA 6-50 outlet with a corded mobile connector. Hard to say how many people have a hard wired system. It wasn't worth the expense of adding another outlet just to get another 8A of charging power.

Seems all the ones I see in the Reno area are 16 KW.

I think those are the only ones I have used while on the road--all 16KW.




My home Tesla Wall connectors are good for 12KW, hard wired.   I have yet to see one that could only do 6KW anywhere I have used a Tesla Destination Station.


 But I am not saying such do not exist, just has been my own experience.

As I said in my last line, just my own experience in the Reno area.


BTW, I think the higher power ones are older. Designed for older Teslas before the Supercharger Network was so common.  Some of the older Teslas have 16 or even 24KW chargers built in, IIRC.


BTW, a couple of weeks ago, I saw an old Tesla at Squaw Valley charging direct with a J-1772, no adapter. I had no idea that older Teslas used a J-1772. I have no idea what year the car was, it looked kinda old for a Tesla.


I should have taken a photo of it.  I never saw the owner.


EDIT: I think it was a 2016 Model X. I think it's the car shown in 2017 on Plugshare there at Squaw Valley on July 20, 2017 in the photos. It sure looked like the same Tesla  I saw a couple of weeks ago, connected to a J-1772 direct.

The adapters can be quite small. I doubt anybody would want to permanently swap a J-1772 into their Telsa.

I own a Tesla with a couple of those adapters. 2018 M3 LR AWD.


I was assuming the old Teslas had a J-1772 as stock and years later went to their own proprietary inlet. That was what I was thinking when I saw that old Tesla with no adapter. I also don't think anybody would change it from stock. There's no real advantage, other than such adapters do not lock in and can be ripped off.

What an awesome event!  Well done and nice write-up Morgan.  I had the opportunity to meet with Patrick at the CRA race at Buttonwillow where he raced that same SR/F to second in the Formula E class.
